Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Our council can't even afford to print the bin rota anymore much to the consternation of the local Facebook users.

OMG I DIDN'T EVEN THINK HOW A NUCLEAR ATTACK WOULD MESS UP THE BIN COLLECTIONS! 😱 They're bad enough as it is... ending the garden bin collections just as the autumn leaves start falling, tut tut...

I think going quickly would be preferable to slowly.

That's how I feel, don't want to be hanging around for the hell that would be left, looting, disease, contaminated land and water. Society is already nasty and selfish without a nuclear war smashing it into oblivion.

Chowtime · 20/11/2024 13:06

You'd need a gun. The problem with that is, someone stronger than me will take it off me.

Spuddling · 20/11/2024 13:07

I'm really surprised someone hasn't taken out Putin. We need a James Bond or if there's no budget for that, Jonny English will do.

A pamphlet to tell us what? If nukes are on the way, you, me and everyone else are dead.

Should be covered in a sentence on the pamphlet.

So shall we reel out the old public info films telling us to take cover under a kitchen table?

Chowtime · 20/11/2024 10:45

We have a perfectly competent defence system. Let NATO worry about that.

The whole point of having nuclear weapons is that we DONT have to use them. Just the threat is enough of a deterrent

But Russia is vast and it's stock of nuclear missiles is likely to outlast those of the West especially if Trump sits back and applauds his mate Putin.

Sneezeless · 20/11/2024 13:09

There was a film made in the 1980s which might be of help. It's called Threads...

Hyperion100 · 20/11/2024 10:45

Heres a tip...if you're anywhere near a mushroom cloud...get in your car and drive towards it. It'll be better than the alternative.

No joke. I'd rather die quickly than live through whatever comes after. Don't know what Denmark is doing, but I'd stock up on pills rather than wait for a pamphlet.

Do you think us working class types can't read or somefink? Hmm

Perhaps a tiktok or something for the yoof?

atotalshambles · 20/11/2024 13:13

Threads is on Iplayer now. It is very well made but very scary. I think any nuclear bombs being detonated anywhere could lead to the end of humanity (they are so much bigger amd more powerful than the bombs dropped in Japan in the Second World War. Even Trump couldn't stand by and watch (even if he wanted to).

Cold War advice leaflets were about reducing panic by giving people things to do. The government knew it wouldn’t help them survive.

Iodine tablets are just about lower doses of radiation being taken up by the thyroid. Not much use for huge doses of whole body irradiation.

Theres a clip which went viral last year where they announced on some Russian TV show the targets within the UK- 3 bombs would cripple the country beyond comprehension- London, Birmingham and Manchester plus some attacks on military installations.

I happen to live directly in the bullseye of one of those targets. I don’t fancy living surviving in a post apocalyptic world. Life’s hard enough now without radioactive mutants and no means of communication, devastated transportation and infrastructure, food, water or medical help.

Very glad i'm right in the cloud of one of those - I'd be actively heading into it as no way do I want to survive the post apocalyptic world either. I appreciate it wouldn't actually be like fallout but it certainly wouldn't be fun.

WooleyMunky · 20/11/2024 13:18

Xi Jinping is in charge of China, and could possibly launch nuclear weapons.
Biden / Trump are in charge of the USA, and providing protocols are met, could probably also launch nuclear weapons.
Putin is not really in control of Russia, the mafia is. Russia is a mafia state run on behalf of organised crime, which is why Putin gets to sabre-rattle and murder the odd dissenting rebel, but he can't do anything to threaten the financial gain of the people that actually make the money in Russia.

MaloryJones · 20/11/2024 13:19

Chowtime · 20/11/2024 10:47

What guidance do you need?????

Surely you wouldn't even want to survive a nuclear attack????

Quite

Re leaflets. We had those back in the 80s. How to Survive a Nuclear Attack I think they were headed.

When I was 19 I watched the first showing of Threads (I watched again earlier in this month I think it was, its 40th anniversary) , still chilled me to the bone.
Anyway, I remember one line in particular that was "Nobody wins a Nuclear War" and I do, of course, recall the harrowing ending of it all.
OP back then I was terrified, geuinely so (but it did not help that as well as the above we had films When the Wind Blows, Testament and The Day After, among others) and Top 40 hits to do with War ie Dancing with Tears in my Eyes, Enola Gay, Two Tribes etc etc.
I get your concern but do try not to worry (I know that's easy to say)

My thyroid didn't survive it's last contact with radiation, I'm more concerned about running out of levothyroxine.

You would have missed the boat if you are capable of heading into it. Better to throw yourself off a bridge - less pain than dying of radiation poisoning over hours/days.

1457bloom · 20/11/2024 13:22

I doubt if Putin will ever fire a nuke, it's just scaremongering to get a good land deal on Ukraine.

Begsthequestion · 20/11/2024 13:22

Germany thinks it was Russia but yeah nothing is certain yet:

https://news.sky.com/story/russia-accused-of-escalating-hybrid-attacks-in-europe-after-baltic-sea-telecoms-cables-cut-13256781

And also a Chinese cargo ship cut another cable in 2023, by "accidentally" dragging an anchor across the sea floor: https://news.sky.com/story/chinese-ships-anchor-caused-damage-to-baltic-gas-pipeline-finland-suggests-12992004

Cold War allies at it again...

Totally agree with You.

I am 5(ish) Miles from Westminster so I suppose (hope) I would be wiped out rather quickly.
Who wants to survive a nuclear war ? Not Me.

Posypointshoes · 20/11/2024 13:24

I’m in Essex so I’m more worried about not being killed instantly. I’ve long since given up panicking about these things. Grim though.

Found out lately my neighbour has a bunker under her home. Absolutely buzzing. Been sending apple pies round and that, I better get a fucking invite over there when this kicks off or I want my pie back

😆😆

Begsthequestion · 20/11/2024 13:27

It's not about nukes.

It's about cyber attacks, infrastructure sabotage etc.

Can you feed yourself and your loved ones until the power/internet/water is back on?

😂 Or we could try taking some responsibility for ourselves?

By doing what?🤔
