Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

My ex helped build (GCHQ) and he questioned why it didn't have red and white rings for clarification and the avoidance of doubt

If (pamphleting) doesn't work I suggest a whist drive

Just loving all these ... keep 'em coming folks Grin Grin

Recipe for borsch to welcome the invaders?

The borsch is on. I'm ready.

The UK's warning system and (such as it was) civil defence infrastructure was dismantled after the end of the cold war.

The only method of "warning" the public about such an event would be the text message thing which was trialled a while back with limited results...

Essentially the defence of the UK rests on the ability to get our own nuclear weapons away before the infrastructure to do that is destroyed - the duty officer at Fylingdales would make some calls and then wait the 15 or so minutes before the place is vaporised.

What about a nice comforting speech from the government:
"People of the UK, if Russia does decide to launch a nuclear attack, we will register our displeasure with NATO. For the ordinary people I have a word of comfort for you: 'Goodbye' ."

Or maybe we could start a national programme, similar to Big Brother, to decide who gets into the nuclear shelters.

Take your pick (you have approximately 3.04663 seconds)

Flapjacker48 · 20/11/2024 12:40

As an aside there is a classic "Mandela effect" relating to the old nuclear information booklet in the UK - Protect and Survive - many are convinced it was distributed to all homes in the 1970s - it wasn't.

I lived through all the nuclear scares in the early 80s, it was a genuine risk then and I had endless nightmares about it as a young girl. The government advice was shit as there's literally nothing you can do if someone presses that button. Unless you have a nuclear bunker under your house and you are within three minutes of it. Should you manage to get in your bunker, do you really want to live in a post nuclear world? I sure as hell don't. So, I'm not going to worry about it and I say that as someone who is a natural born worrier.

Same here. I used to watch tv programmes about it. What a waste of time. I wish someone had told me that it is better to be dead than survive a nuclear attack.

I feel sorry for the people who have nuclear bunkers.

What shelters?
I don't think the LAs still maintain the RSG shelters. There are no civilian shelters, never have been in the UK in the Cold War and post Cold War era.

skilpadde · 20/11/2024 12:43

I see that Finland's pamphlet was already shared upthread.

Here's the Swedish pamphlet... rib.msb.se/filer/pdf/30874.pdf

Those who mock the distribution of physical pamphlets... a lot of the advice is how in the event of power outages or cyber attacks, you won't have access to information online. It's recommended that you keep paper records of important information and phone numbers.

A pamphlet!
That's the most middle class British thing I've heard!
Dear lord

No civilian ones, but think of the politicians who would be on the priority list.
They'll need some decent people for afterwards. Think of the state of the world if only this useless bunch were the ones to survive.

I'm near GCHQ anyway so hopefully it'll land right on my head Grin

Same, about 10 minutes walk away. Can look at it from my bedroom window. So we will be gone pretty quick.

We're we not told earlier this year to keep supplies at home to last us three days. Maybe that was it.

I hope your post is sarcasm. If not, your reaction is exactly how Putin wants it.

Well, I know my phone won't be working in the event of a power cut or internet outage. It's Digital Voice since fibre was installed. Not much use for phone numbers!

I'm going looting. I already have a wishlist.

That's a brilliant idea lol. I'm ashamed I didn't think of that

The ruskies also probably havent found our about balaclava'd knife wielding ebike riding "yutes".

We can probably stand an army of over half a million of those if my local area is anything to go by.

We just need to pay the yutes with a pair of nike trainers, a bag of weed and a bottle of Prime.

Sounds like a cunning plan. 👌🏻

Lubilu02 · 20/11/2024 12:52

No harm in getting an extra 3 days supply of food. I've bought a few extra bits this morning, things that will keep and I will end up using anyway. It's for my own piece of mind if nothing else. .
I could quite happily go without, but I'm not sure my little ones would cope too well doing the same.

feellikeanalien · 20/11/2024 12:53

I remember my dad in the 60s going to Civil Defence meetings. Not sure what he actually did but if my memory serves me correctly (which is not always the case these days!) I think he had a beret and a greatcoat that he wore. Don't think that exists any more.

Lorrymum · 20/11/2024 12:55

I live close to the AWE (Atomic Weapon Establishment) so don't stand a cat in hells chance!

pumpkinpillow · 20/11/2024 12:56

itsmylife7 · 20/11/2024 12:22

Correct.

That's what my plan is after recently watching the nuclear bomb film from the 80s ?

But but but...I've only had my car a few months. Can I take my bike instead?

I think going quickly would be preferable to slowly.

You know you can't buy iodine at an effective dose for nuclear fallout at Holland and Barrett, right?

Fucking gutted!😭

timeforachange999 · 20/11/2024 13:01

Our council can't even afford to print the bin rota anymore much to the consternation of the local Facebook users.

SapphireSeptember · 20/11/2024 13:05

@Lorrymum There's RAF/USAF air bases all over the place where I live. We'd be fucked. There's RAF Wyton, Alconbury, Lakenheath and Molesworth off the top of my head. I've moved towns recently so not as close as I was to the first two, so I might survive. Maybe.
