Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

well they showed Threads a few weeks back. perhaps you could watch that for some inspiration

I watched it a couple of weeks ago. I'm thankful my parents didn't let me watch it when it first came out.

I will just hope it will be over quickly. I don't want to live in a nuclear winter.

Modern Russian Governance is more akin to Peaky Blinders than the old Soviet Union. It's an organised crime syndicate that has found itself in possession of destructive weapons, not a well organised state. This is why they can create havoc but winning is not the objective, such as in Ukraine. War deflects attention from the domestic so war perpetuates the crime syndicate's power.

Russia will never invade or attempt to send a nuclear missile at NATO territory because it is not in the crime syndicate's interests. A lot of their money is hidden in banks in NATO territory for a start. The Russian leadership pick on the weak around them, they wouldn't dare risk their position by picking on the strong.

Kind of annoying to see people mocking the Swedish pamphlets with such derision. It’s not as if the Swedish government are distributing these for shits and giggles. And the very fact they issue each household with a paper one is probably in recognition of the fact that an infrastructure attack (internet down, no power etc) is among the more likely scenarios, rendering a digital version pretty useless at the exact point it is needed.

The pamphlet is really good, it’s calm, clear and concrete, and talks you through exactly what to do in the event of different kinds of crises or war. As well as how to be well prepared for these. There are detailed lists for example of the supplies one should have at home ready, what kinds of foods etc etc, what kind of emergency kit for surviving different situations (bearing in mind that the warmest parts of Sweden are sub zero for several months a year, and the coldest are already now in mid November at -20 something.).

It tells you the meanings of the different alarm signals and what to do / where to go if you hear each kind, plus which radio station to listen to (on your wind up radio!) to get official info. It tells you about protection rooms (public bunkers) and what to expect if you have to use them, and how to identify the location of your nearest ones.

It also explains what to do if you have a war or civilian defence placement (all civilians between 16-70 some kind of placement, some, but not all know theirs already, others would be distributed as needed).

The chances of us needing to use the booklet are probably lower than not needing it, but it’s extremely useful to have and I would refer to it without doubt if needed. It saves a whole population frantically scrabbling around in crisis trying to second guess what to do and how to help themselves and others.

We all know that in the event of a nuclear attack then those directly impacted geographically have little chance, but nuclear war is FAR from the only threat to Europe so it makes sense surely to be as well prepared as possible?

Barney16 · 20/11/2024 12:13

I said to DP, ex military, I'm very worried about us getting attacked by Russia. He said no, if the Russians nuke anywhere it will be the Ukraine. But he did suggest replacing our COVID emergency fray bentos pie with a fray bentos that's actually in date. Tbh, I may take my chances with the Russians.

curious79 · 20/11/2024 12:13

You’re screwed if you even need to ask that question!
anyone even remotely into prepping is way ahead of you

Areolaborealis · 20/11/2024 12:14

I think they already did by advising people to have a stock of non perishable food, water etc. There's not much else we can do. I think it would be kinder not to tell us if a nuclear bomb was on the way.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/11/2024 12:14

The money would be better spent on other pressing issues, such as the state of the NHS

Nice thought, @PumpkinPurple, except they'd still be having committee meetings about committee meetings concerning who's going to sit on the nuclear committee by the time the blast arrived

As with Covid, people enjoy getting themselves into a lather but there's simply no point when there's bugger all we can do about it. Best just get on with your day and ration the bog roll

There’s a government campaign, it’s the one a PP referenced: https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/ It was announced earlier this year and picked up by some media.

I don’t mind a digital leaflet like Finland but sending a paper one to every household would just be a waste of taxpayers money - direct mail is expensive and most of it just gets put in the bin anyway.

Edited

Minimum of 3 litres of water per person per day, and 10 litres per person for maximum comfort. That's a lot of bottled water!

I'm going looting. I already have a wishlist.

I thought "ooooo looting sounds fun, I need new thermal socks...." what has happened to me! Why am I so old!!!

potatocakesinprogress · 20/11/2024 12:15

We're doing nothing, just like covid. And when other countries warn us, we still do nothing. Then we act surprised and use the word "unprecedented" a lot.

Chowtime · 20/11/2024 10:48

I'm near GCHQ anyway so hopefully it'll land right on my head Grin

Yes me too. We will be the first to get it and conveniently, it is target shaped to make life easier for all.

My ex helped build it and he questioned why it didn't have red and white rings for clarification and the avoidance of doubt.

The sad thing is that Putin doesn't give a shit about his citizens so would see nuclear engagement as a much more viable option than pretty much any other country would.

We all need to practice kissing our asses goodbye. Those that survived the early stages would die hideously in the short, medium and long term.

NewGreenDuck · 20/11/2024 12:20

I'm clearing out the cupboard under the stairs so I can hide in it. ( in reality, there is bugger all we can do).

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 20/11/2024 12:20

My goodness have you been reading the daily mail? Where they will go silent on the wars then all of a sudden pop up a radicalised headline like they did yesterday? I read their headlines yesterday and they do make you shudder. But what I also do is check in with all of the media outlets and compare to what is being reported. Compare what is people talked about over socials. You quickly see it’s a sensationalised headline. It came up yesterday as today is 1000 days of war for Russia and Ukraine. I mean do they really think putin has waited to get to day 1000 to escalate. Nah he would have already. Why are they going on about USA missiles? Getting this in before trump takes over to again control and agenda? Frighten people?

have you not noticed that the headlines about war have been quiet for the last few weeks. I follow loads of Gaza pages for example and they have not appeared on my feed. Then again periodically that’s all I read about. It’s all bloody managed what you read and how they want to frighten you.

DogInATent · 20/11/2024 11:25

What sort of attack?

There's not much the public can do about targeting of individual political figures with poison umbrellas or nerve toxins on door handles.

There's not much the public can do about subsea cables being cut.

We don't have a land border with Russia or a Russian ally so invasion is highly unlikely.

In the highly unlikely event that Putin pushes the button there's not a lot the public can do. And if you've ever visited one of the UK Cold War sites such as Kelvedon Hatch you'll understand that there's not a lot anyone can do if that happens - public or government.

We could get a lot more upset about Russian interference with UK politics. But the Venn diagram of those pissed off at Labour over inheritance tax for farmers and those upset about Russian support and manipulation in favour of Brexit, Farage, Reform et al and Boris' overly familiar relationships with Russian oligarchs and intelligence officers doesn't have much overlap.

Actually I think you’re wrong.
I’m a rural remainer who laments the loss of the one.nation tories. Can’t stand Farage.

I support the farmers and I worry about the other things too. Because human beings are capable of complex thought.

TofuTart · 20/11/2024 12:21

I say we hit it hard, and we hit if fast with a major, and I mean major, leaflet campaign.
If that doesn't work I suggest a whist drive.

SuzieNine · 20/11/2024 12:22

Russia isn't going to directly attack the UK. We don't have a land border (unlike Norway and Finland) which rules out any conventional warfare. They aren't going to launch a strategic nuclear attack because MAD (plus it's very unlikely that their nukes actually work). It's not the 80s - Russia is not a credible nuclear threat.

They are already waging hybrid warfare against us - MI5 regularly foil sabotage plots, the Navy regularly escorts off Russian vessels taking an interest in our undersea communication, power, and gas connections.

Expect to see an increase in sabotage at sea and on land. The RAF, the Royal Navy and MI5 are going to have a very busy time of it.

Where we are asleep at the wheel is on the information war - so many disaffected young men are buying into the Putin worldview as disseminated by his useful idiots in the West. It's radicalisation that Al-Quaeda could only have dreamed of, intent on destroying the Western hegemony by turning our own young men against the very institutions that stand between them and the abyss.

EDIT: duh, Norway not Sweden. Basic geog, fail, see me after class.

Heres a tip...if you're anywhere near a mushroom cloud...get in your car and drive towards it. It'll be better than the alternative.

Correct.

That's what my plan is after recently watching the nuclear bomb film from the 80s ?

Found out lately my neighbour has a bunker under her home. Absolutely buzzing. Been sending apple pies round and that, I better get a fucking invite over there when this kicks off or I want my pie back

I'm now wistfully wondering if all my neighbours would start bringing me pie, or cake or cookies if I tell them I've a bunker under my artificial grass

'Cover and take dick might be a more pleasant way to go'

Well that's one idea. Not sure lesbians would agree 😂😂

Thevelvelletes · 20/11/2024 12:26

Get in the bath and cover it with a door...I'm sure that was some government advice early 80s.

If we're being serious for a moment this is precisely my own view, ShinyShona

The criminal gangs running the place may not care about their people, but they care about their own interests and burning down the west would hardly serve them - though the concept may suit the propagandised masses who've become persuaded that everyone's "out to get" Mother Russia

DH suggests we take iodine tablets and drive in the opposite direction to Helensborough. By B roads, apparently (They will be clear because no-one else will have thought of doing this)

He doesn't have a firm idea of where we should stay and what we should eat.

I told him it was possible to go a way for a bit- I have some leave coming up at work.

DH laughed at that. What use is having leave when we're all going to die anyway? I told him the leave was important for when we don't get nuked after all and we have to come home and explain where we've been all this time.

I'll leave you to imagine what he was like to live with over Covid.

That really made me laugh 😂

Your post suggests you think that Russia suddenly one day apropos of nothing, decided to invade Ukraine, which isn't what happened at all.

No, he's spent over a decade building up to this.

It wasn't you that suggested we should watch the Tucker interview was it? Because that's a good introduction to the entirely fictional narrative that Putin has been building up to justify Russian actions. And why Russia must not be rewarded for annexation and invasion of the sovereign territories of neighbouring nations.
