Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Personality wise, Putin isn’t Hitler. Hitler was neurotic, if not psychotic. Putin is not crazy in the way Hitler was crazy.

He’s also not sat in a bunker in a bombed out shell of a city, in a collapsed country, with the forces of his greatest ideological enemy rapidly approaching.

Lavrov and Medvedev are sabre rattling, like they’ve been constantly doing. It would make very little sense however for Russia to launch a nuclear strike when there’s a new U.S administration coming in January that is almost guaranteed to be favorable towards their interests.

That isn’t to say it won’t happen, but imo it’s unlikely.

@InterIgnis Hitler also had a fondness for methamphetamine which probably also fuelled his manic behaviour and ideas.

Mickeymix · 20/11/2024 16:43

The Russkies are now threatening to knock out a US satellite for each attack.

Dabralor · 20/11/2024 16:47

Maximum respect to all those folk organised enough to find the time to wash their hair during the nuclear bomb event 👏🏼

How old are you OP?

We did all this in the 80s

Quite and the 60s and 70s. And yet all these threads keep popping up with people posting how they'd have loved to live then, what with the music and the fashion and the general wonderfulness.

I remember Reagan getting in - we thought that was it, the end of days was coming. I can't even remember why now!

I'm quite happy to forego a pamphlet. Although across the road, does have a WW2 shelter in their garden. However, I'm not sure I'd want to be stuck with them for the entire nuclear winter.

The Russkies are now threatening to knock out a US satellite for each attack.

You can add that to all the other threats the Ruskies (and that is a very old school word ...) have made over the past decade.

People with power don't need to make threats. They just do what they want.

Flapjacker48 · 20/11/2024 16:52

@Hedgenight The only way anyone in the 1980's "got a pamphlet" relating to nuclear attack was:

a.) You purchased it from the stationary office (50p) OR;

b.) Lived on the Isle of Man;

c.) Your local authority was anti nuclear weapons and produced something that looked like guidance but was actually a "we need to disarmament now" book

Mickeymix · 20/11/2024 16:52

Yes, Old School, I am a Len Deighton fan and others.
I'm watching to see if anyone has snow on their boots - very suspect

Shhhthedogssleeping · 20/11/2024 16:52

Well my DM bought me the cuddly toy I’d been wanting for ages, during the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. She thought I might as well be happy as I was obliterated. We were that close to Armageddon.

I still have that teddy so I’ll just cuddle him if Armageddon does happen this time. Somehow I doubt it will. There’s been so many nuclear threats, escalations (both real and perceived) throughout my life, most is mad men willy waving. Keep a few days of supplies in if you must and live for the day.

That's very rude - you might not know what the poster is talking about but some of us do!

I think it's perfectly reasonable that I should not be permitted to vote because @Mekumeku is completely ignorant of one of the most infamous episodes of 20th century British history.

Labour are going to make you all frightened of saying honest things and tax you all to make sure you will welcome your new Russian overlords.

Just pop this here ...

“Germany’s largest companies are being advised to prepare for a possible
war with Russia. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reports that the Bundeswehr has started reaching out to company representatives to prepare for a possible war with Russia.”

“The Head of Hamburg State Command, Lieutenant Colonel Jörn Plischke, made specific recommendations for business representatives.
“For every hundred employees, train at least five additional truck drivers.
People from Eastern Europe drive 70% of all trucks on German roads. If
there is a war there, where will these people end up?” the military asked.
According to him, enterprises should have autonomous power sources, such as
diesel generators or their own wind turbines.

Plischke added that Russia is preparing for a conflict with Germany by
conducting unmanned reconnaissance flights, sabotage, cyberattacks, and
assassination attempts on top managers of German companies.”

@SerendipityJane Germany does tend to prepare for things quite thoroughly - for example, in the UK we have nothing approaching THW for emergency response to large scale events or incidents.

Where have you seen that?

Hedgenight · 20/11/2024 17:15

@Flapjacker48 i was only about 9 at the time so really have no clue. But they definitely received something as my DF laughed about it.

OuchyEars · 20/11/2024 17:23

For all those saying Putin doesn't want to die, he is neither young nor in good health (allegedly).
I feel sure he is the sort of man to decide that if he can't live any longer, nor should anyone else.
I am glad some of you believe those around him could stop him. Personally I don't think Russia will have nearly the extent of checks and balances for firing that we have.

Mickeymix · 20/11/2024 17:27

"The Russkies are now threatening to knock out a US satellite for each attack."

It was on MSN,Tagtik and one of the usual speakers like Lavrov

Mytattooisbiggerthanyours · 20/11/2024 17:27

I’m going to lay off buying Christmas presents for a while. I’m not even sure if I’m joking.

A cynic would say Germany has things worth saving 😀

The UK will always have a peculiar relationship with the world due to it's peculiar geography. It is entirely sensible for a German to fear a physical invasion from a neighbour in almost exactly the same way it would be bonkers for a Briton to fear an invasion.

Singleandproud · 20/11/2024 16:18

@80smonster I think I'd head for the War Rooms in Westminster if I was in London There is a similar one at RAF Uxbridge - getting in might be an issue though. Although I have Security Clearance so maybe I can just wave my work pass lol.

Wave that VIP pass! I take your point though, sounds like there’ll be queue to get in. We aren’t exactly on Chislehursts doorstep either, bit of a drive. On the basis the world is ending, we could dump the car very close to the end of the queue…

https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/foreign-affairs/russian-investigation-confirms-putins-son-was-born-in-switzerland/87496838

Putin has a young pretty wife and kids under 10! This guy is not going to be nuking anyone any time soon. He just bluffs so that poorer young Russian soldiers are sacrificed to the cold winter and Ukrainian war. Would you be sending your sons to their death without a ton of propaganda and blustering?

Chowtime · 20/11/2024 18:30

Small update: Ok we can breathe a small sigh of relief.

SARMAT2 failed to launch. Oh that’s good news!

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/09/24/europe/russia-sarmat-missile-test-failure-intl

we live to die another day!

hahahaha!

Russia so corrupt everyone has taken their share from Putin to the oligarchs to the generals and so on and so on till you come to the bottom and they're sending 7 year old out of date rations to the soldiers on the front line! I don't fear Russia.

Araminta1003 · 20/11/2024 18:31

Also that article states Putin has older children studying abroad. Most likely somewhere expensive like the US itself! These autocrats are massive blustering hypocrites, they say one thing for show and to stay in power and do another.

The US have the greatest military capability. If they have said yes now, that will be backed up by their security services and presumably something to do with the harsh Russian winter about to set in.

The idea of Starmer pontificating on national news with his nasal voice after having to endure Boris the Buffoon during Covid - that scares me more!

Araminta1003 · 20/11/2024 18:35

The Germans probably want to get their economy going and love to be prepared and organised for any eventuality, so of course they are going to be telling industry to prepare.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 20/11/2024 18:38

SARMAT2 and Trident both have a range of about 20m.

Election interference, cable cutting, small scale poisonings, cyber attacks, civil unrest are far more likely means of attack. Have you seen the chaos of a major supermarket having their payment systems down for half a day?

Yes they are massive hypocrites- who like all these nice western things like a good education which is so precious it’s never found in Russia.

I feel sorry for ordinary Russians but they are run by gangsters running on USSR nostalgia.

We get worried about migrants. I’d be glad to see Russians gone from the U.K. They murder people here with impunity.
