Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Crazy to think some of you have kids

The Swedes have the national alarm every three months in all the main towns and cities. It goes off at 2pm for a couple of minutes on a Monday as a test. If it goes off any other time then they know it's something serious. They are used to it and generally rather sensible. An updated pamphlet isn't going to panic people.

We live by an air field where they repair and build military (and private) aircraft for UK and other countries. Once a week they test the air raid siren (plus remembrance). I’m so used to it it only just occurred to me they do it.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 20/11/2024 14:00

Whatever it is, they're obviously not going to publicise it in advance. An enemy of any country would use that sort of information to their advantage.

I need to go and read what Trump is planning to end the war in Ukraine as I’ve heard it said online but not actually looked it up. I remember listening to a radio station where they said Putin had more respect for Trump because he recognised him as a strong man similar to himself. Make of that what you will 🤦🏻‍♀️

Apparently Finland and Sweden are giving out pamphlets. Germany has published a document where they are going to act as a ‘logistics hub’ for NATO troops. Russia is mass producing mobile bunkers for their citizens. I just wonder what Keir and crew are getting together for us.
A Powerpoint to duck and take cover at least? I had to change the autocorrect from’dick’ and take cover 🤦🏻‍♀️)

My hot sexting guy in Stockholm says the pamphlets are updated quite regularly over there.

I’m actually more scared about trump’s cabinet and their shady histories.

But Trump wouldn’t care if Putin did take over Ukraine. He is not interested in Ukraine. Whereas at the moment the person with their figure on the Trigger in America is someone who does have an interventionist history and also has dementia.

I'm attempting to discuss real world scenarios. But everyone just keeps saying they want to die in a nuclear attack....

Yes I would.
Better than the alternative.

I will also consider Dignitas, or suicide if I am not allowed or don't have the means.

As long as my children are taken care of or independent

When you look at how much Poland is spending on defence, it puts the UK to shame. Our politicians have been asleep at the wheel.

Poland have the advantage of understanding the threat and the role their military must focus on. Having been used as a tank motorway from both the east and west during the second world war, their purpose is clear. Withhold an invading force and counter attack. Don't be the easy option - but equally don't be a Maginot line and work with your neighbours.

The UK has been in a muddle for decades. The three armed forces squabble and compete for funding, and each have their own biased priorities to lobby for. The chances of the UK being invaded are low, so what's the function beyond maritime and airborne patrol and interdiction? - mostly political and connected to the UKs perception of its role on the world stage. Like other European NATO partners we were keen to grab the peace dividend post Cold War and scale things back.

Let’s be realistic, Biden is nowhere near the button. Trump wants to end the war by just giving Putin bits of Ukraine; like he has the right to even do that.

BeTwinklyKhakiPanda · 20/11/2024 14:06

A pamphlet won't block nuclear fallout for long

So you are saying there has been a coup in America?

rewilded · 20/11/2024 14:07

I'll be honest it is a relief Trump has been elected because Keir will fuck this up.

I'm not relieved at all. Trump's pronouncements strongly suggest he thinks you can buy peace by giving dictators what they want. History shows how foolish this is. If Trump forces Ukraine to agree a deal that allows Russia to retain the territory they have gained in this invasion, Putin will almost certainly be back for more. In my view, Trump's approach makes WWIII more likely, not less.

PrimitivePerson · 20/11/2024 14:11

I'm amazed at what some people worry about. The worst that will happen is that we'll run out of bloody toilet roll again.

I think the thought must be that there's some comfort if other places muck it up too. Solidarity or something.

Otherwise there is no sense there.

So you are saying there has been a coup in America?

I think the individual president is guided by those around him, which is normal but in this case likely to be more so than say Obama required.

What a strange comment. To modify the post to which you are responding a little, Biden (who is currently president of the US) is nowhere near the button. Trump (who will be president in January) wants to end the war by just giving Putin bits of Ukraine. Nothing there to suggest a coup in America.

Panama2 · 20/11/2024 14:15

If we are nuked the land will be no good for growing crops.

In WW2 we barely managed to feed ourselves with a much smaller population and more land used for growing so if land not nuked we are still up shit creek without the old paddle

PointsSouth · 20/11/2024 14:18

My dad was a London copper. He was told that, in the event of an atomic bomb coming at us, he and the other coppers would be ushered into a bunker because someone would have to maintain law and order in the aftermath.

To which he and all the other coppers replied, "Don't be fucking stupid. The minute you tell us there's a bomb coming, we'll be going home to our families."

Apparently the top brass hadn't thought of that.

Biden, as the elected president is the commander in chief. If he is no longer able to make the final decisions then it suggests unelected people around him are making those decisions. There has been a coup. A quiet one may be but the removal of power from a president and passing that power to others other than by a legitimate political process is a coup.

But it might if you folded it into a hat?

The whole idea is absurd
