Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

My dad was a London copper. He was told that, in the event of an atomic bomb coming at us, he and the other coppers would be ushered into a bunker because someone would have to maintain law and order in the aftermath.

To which he and all the other coppers replied, "Don't be fucking stupid. The minute you tell us there's a bomb coming, we'll be going home to our families."

Apparently the top brass hadn't thought of that.

Well it’s better to die with your family than in a bunker. What kind of loon starts thinking “what about work” at that point?

Biden, as the elected president is the commander in chief. If he is no longer able to make the final decisions then it suggests unelected people around him are making those decisions. There has been a coup. A quiet one may be but the removal of power from a president and passing that power to others other than by a legitimate political process is a coup.

If you look at his son, Hunter and links to Ukraine, it’s personal. This isn’t a coup.

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast

If I were you I'd stop reading the Daily Mail and those newspapers who like to make a drama out of things to have a bash at the government.

The reality is somewhat different. Mark Urban who is a credible defence journalist (Newsnight, The Sunday Times) has explained that these are not long range missiles, they are 200 miles max and the USA is only providing coordinates to allow the Ukrainians to shoot them at North Korean troops in Russia. While disagreeably self-interested of Biden, it's not the thing that will start off WW3.

What's more important is that Russia is not allowed to brandish its nuclear weapsons to kowtow USA and Europe into acceding to its demands. If that happens, more countries will try to acquire nuclear weapons in the future, putting us in more danger.

The Swedish 'If a crisis or war comes' is just the emergency info which used to be in the front of every phone book. We're only getting it in booklet form as there is no longer a phone book.

We have a government department whose job it is to prepare everyone for any eventuality by keeping the population informed. It's useful information but not something to panic over. You panic when they start clearing the spiders out of the bomb shelters, which isn't happening.

You can read the advice in English if you're interested.

The brochure In case of crisis or war

A new Swedish version of the brochure ‘In case of crisis or war’ will be sent to all households from 18 November for two weeks. Here you will find a version in English to download, order or listen to.

So you are saying a man with dementia and obvious cognitive decline IS in charge of decision making in America?

As a slight tangent, and on the subject of films being made, does anyone else remember the Ready Brek spoof from Not the Nine o'Clock News?

Yes I would.
Better than the alternative.

I will also consider Dignitas, or suicide if I am not allowed or don't have the means.

As long as my children are taken care of or independent

Me too.

But there are many other possibilities other than a nuclear attack, which I would try to survive.

dottiehens · 20/11/2024 14:29

I can’t think we can be in worse hands than with this government.

MyrtleStrumpet · 20/11/2024 14:29

I live near an American airbase. The number of planes overhead is much lower than usual so I wouldn't worry about it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/11/2024 14:30

Putin is not really in control of Russia, the mafia is. Russia is a mafia state run on behalf of organised crime, which is why Putin gets to sabre-rattle and murder the odd dissenting rebel, but he can't do anything to threaten the financial gain of the people that actually make the money in Russia

I tried to explain this to a rather naive pal who's always maintained the money Abramovitch has made "proves" the success of the place, @WooleyMunky

Unfortunately the real explanation - that he's a gangster who was well placed to grab the spoils when communism collapsed - went right over her head

Mekumeku · 20/11/2024 14:30

The so-called British government should have never gotten involved. Very angry about the whole thing. I wonder if the idiotic 'I support the current thing' crowd still have their Ukraine flags up?

The ruskies also probably havent found our about balaclava'd knife wielding ebike riding "yutes".

We can probably stand an army of over half a million of those if my local area is anything to go by.

We just need to pay the yutes with a pair of nike trainers, a bag of weed and a bottle of Prime.

That made me laugh. But are we sure the balaclava's youths won't crumble at the sight of a Russian soldier.

Surely saying he is nowhere near the button doesn't mean someone else is making the final decision, just that he is nowhere near making a decision to push the button. I am nowhere near buying a house, but that doesn't mean someone else will make that decision for me or that I am incapable of making it. It simply means that I'm happy where I am and have no intention of moving.

Apparently Finland and Sweden are giving out pamphlets. Germany has published a document where they are going to act as a ‘logistics hub’ for NATO troops. Russia is mass producing mobile bunkers for their citizens. I just wonder what Keir and crew are getting together for us.
A Powerpoint to duck and take cover at least? I had to change the autocorrect from’dick’ and take cover 🤦🏻‍♀️)

The 25th Amendment allows for this.

Please stop spouting the Trump branded bullshit. It's not big, it's not clever, and this isn't the audience for it. If you want to spend some time looking at the people around a president, have a look at the muppets Trump is lining up for his administration.

Yes, we do have our flags up because we absolutely support the Ukrainian people, not just those we have welcomed into our communities, but those who are fighting our common enemy at home.

And your spelling gives you away as not being British - how's the weather in Moscow today?

I’m not on TikTok. This is being discussed all over the place as it is current news! It’s in papers, online, on the radio. I think the issue is all lot of people won’t read the news so then get cross when other people do and want to discuss it

When you look at how much Poland is spending on defence, it puts the UK to shame. Our politicians have been asleep at the wheel.

Like much of NATO they're not spending most of it - America is - so they'd better hope Trump's willing to go on picking up the bills

And since most are agreed they wouldn't want to survive this holocaust I guess those not right next to one had better pick a nuclear installation and move into a camp next to it ... you know, like Greenham Common only bigger

But you can on Amazon.

Is it good? It's on my Wishlist.

Some of the authorisations and actions mentioned at the Kelvedon Hatch museum are chilling. Cold and calculated. Someone mentioned the dogs and cats at the start of the second world war. The considered civil contingencies in the event of a nuclear war go way, way beyond this.

Can you list these contingencies or provide a link please?

Grammarnut · 20/11/2024 14:53

Russia is not going to attack the UK. Not if they value Moscow and St. Petersburg, anyway - because they would be targeted by nuclear weapons. We do have them, you know? They float round in submarines. And they don't do it for nothing. Mind, if Starmer is into disarmament then we're in trouble!

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/11/2024 14:54

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 10:54

Russia appear to me to be very fucking petty. I don’t think they are that interested in killing everyone directly but they’d very much like to cause as much strife and discomfort as possible. So agree about irregular warfare.

We've already experienced this. Russia wouldn't waste a nuke on us, they'd wind up all our home grown racists who'd wreck the UK for them.

Cheap, easy and they can claim "It wasn't me guv".

Britain spends c.2% of GDP on defence - which is more than any of our NATO allies apart from the US.

No, they'd cut off Europe's oil again, so Norway would be in the position of having to supply the continent rather than us.
Russia is a third rate power pretending to be the USSR still (and that wasn't all it was hyped up to be).
