Are we just going for the head in the sand approach or are we going to get a pamphlet or something?

Not sure how much use three days worth of food would be either.

SuzieNine · 20/11/2024 13:48

@PlopSofa there hasn't been a single successful test launch of SARMAT2. The latest test in September this year left a smoking crater where the launch silo used to be. Just another failed Putin project, along with being in Kyiv within ten days.

hellywelly3 · 20/11/2024 13:48

Didn’t we all get a booklet a few years ago about how to prepare for different emergencies

Kind of annoying to see people mocking the Swedish pamphlets with such derision. It’s not as if the Swedish government are distributing these for shits and giggles. And the very fact they issue each household with a paper one is probably in recognition of the fact that an infrastructure attack (internet down, no power etc) is among the more likely scenarios, rendering a digital version pretty useless at the exact point it is needed.

The pamphlet is really good, it’s calm, clear and concrete, and talks you through exactly what to do in the event of different kinds of crises or war. As well as how to be well prepared for these. There are detailed lists for example of the supplies one should have at home ready, what kinds of foods etc etc, what kind of emergency kit for surviving different situations (bearing in mind that the warmest parts of Sweden are sub zero for several months a year, and the coldest are already now in mid November at -20 something.).

It tells you the meanings of the different alarm signals and what to do / where to go if you hear each kind, plus which radio station to listen to (on your wind up radio!) to get official info. It tells you about protection rooms (public bunkers) and what to expect if you have to use them, and how to identify the location of your nearest ones.

It also explains what to do if you have a war or civilian defence placement (all civilians between 16-70 some kind of placement, some, but not all know theirs already, others would be distributed as needed).

The chances of us needing to use the booklet are probably lower than not needing it, but it’s extremely useful to have and I would refer to it without doubt if needed. It saves a whole population frantically scrabbling around in crisis trying to second guess what to do and how to help themselves and others.

We all know that in the event of a nuclear attack then those directly impacted geographically have little chance, but nuclear war is FAR from the only threat to Europe so it makes sense surely to be as well prepared as possible?

Thank you for this post. Is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote the thread. I’d actually like some well thought out guidance just as you describe. Why don’t the Swedish people panic buy which is what everyone is assuming people living in the UK would do? Is it because as someone said thread, they are more used to natural disasters/energencies?

Jeesh, can you imagine them sending a pamphlet to the British public, it'll be panic buying all over again like the petrol and covid!!

Not on a snow day though, apparently the bulk of MN go to ground the moment there's a dusting.

Leave the World Behind?

Have you actually seen it? I don't think you have.

prh47bridge · 20/11/2024 13:44

That's the one.

One of Putin's wonder weapons (I'm sure someone in a similar position in history used a similar phrase).

Like the Armata, frequently seen in parades but not in Ukraine.

PlopSofa · 20/11/2024 13:49

@SuzieNine yes I know. I updated with another message a bit further down after double checking.

what a relief!

The Russian propaganda machine had def got to me!

BoobyDazzler · 20/11/2024 13:50

I’ve played Fallout, I’ll be fine.

In all seriousness though, you just gotta hope you’re either far enough away from the blast to have no ill effects and are able to survive with no power, no supermarkets, and no water through the taps, or close enough that you get vaporised instantly.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/11/2024 13:51

Spuddling · 20/11/2024 13:07

I'm really surprised someone hasn't taken out Putin. We need a James Bond or if there's no budget for that, Jonny English will do.

I think it’s because there’s about four or five Putins publicly at the moment. Assassinating him would be like whack-a-mole.

When you look at how much Poland is spending on defence, it puts the UK to shame. Our politicians have been asleep at the wheel.

It's not about nukes though. That's your own fantasy playing out there.

bombastix · 20/11/2024 13:52

Nuclear attack I would top myself. No point trying to survive that.

i assume it’s infrastructure attacks, NHS, internet, food supply. About all you can do is have candles and tins of food. Frankly if it did go to pieces the looting would be off the scale anyway.

Taytocrisps · 20/11/2024 13:52

I have some iodine tablets which were issued by the Irish government some time ago. Happy to flog them to the highest bidder, although they're a few years out of date now.

No worries. The Russian information war is utterly pervasive, as I've posted about on this thread. They have provocateurs and useful idiots throughout Western media. Many influencers listened to by disaffected young men in particular might as well be on the Kremlin payroll.

I'll find a bunker ;-)

Don't know why you are so concerned about contesting everyone's replies.

Anyway, I don't give a shit. there is nothing I can do to prepare. I am not going to hoard cans of food or toilet paper...

Life goes on. I'll worry when it happens.

I don’t think about it really, let alone fantasise about it! What would be the point?

SharpOpalNewt · 20/11/2024 13:55

Sweden are closer, Russia is just the other side of Finland.

bombastix · 20/11/2024 13:56

There is an online movement of utter oddballs preparing for this stuff. I think it gives their paranoia meaning

The Swedes have the national alarm every three months in all the main towns and cities. It goes off at 2pm for a couple of minutes on a Monday as a test. If it goes off any other time then they know it's something serious. They are used to it and generally rather sensible. An updated pamphlet isn't going to panic people.

Dramalady52 · 20/11/2024 13:57

Back in the early eighties there was a pamphlet put out called "protect and survive" that covered what to do. Basically fill your bath with fresh water, cover with a door you've removed from somewhere in the house, hide under the dining table or under the stairs, preferably with a stash of canned food, a radio and a torch, don't forget your can opener, you have 3 minutes from the warning, good luck! 😁

I'm attempting to discuss real world scenarios. But everyone just keeps saying they want to die in a nuclear attack....

DemonicCaveMaggot · 20/11/2024 11:28

We are more likely to be sent into riot mode by Russian disinformation on social media, or lose power, water, NHS treatments, and sewage treatment due to cyber attacks. Anything to destabilize the country and put us at odds with each other.

This is their approach, not nuclear war. More likely to get disinformation, interference than nuclear weapons

IOSTT · 20/11/2024 13:57

I read somewhere that if you’re many miles from eg a large city, then keep all your doors and windows locked - radiation fallout is worst in the first 24 hours. If you have a room without windows, stay in there. Take iodine tablets. That’s all I’ve got for you, OP!

ps the people waiting in the sidelines for Putin’s job are even more psychopathic!

TeenLifeMum · 20/11/2024 13:57

I’m actually more scared about trump’s cabinet and their shady histories.
