Appologies if this has already been posted. Mum asked to leave a Costa coffee shop for breastfeeding!

This makes me very and at the same time. How can a thing as natural as breastfeeding be so taboo in our society today? I am personally going to be avoiding Costa for this reason from now on. I live near Poole so i know which Costa the woman was asked to leave from.

Thoughts please?

I'm just in awe of anyone managing to go out for coffee 3 days after giving birth!!
at the story though.

Kimi · 21/04/2008 20:50

It is the most natural thing in the world, this is so wrong.
I did not BF but I am not upset or offended by someone feeding baby while I am having a coffee, in fact our local coffee shops are a massive meeting place for mums and babies, most of whom are fed while there.

DH1 reckons he has seen more norks in costa then in the daily star

Someone needs to have a butt kicking for this.... poor woman

poppy34 · 21/04/2008 20:52

think there is a separate thread on breastfeeding topic.

What is the actual position about bf in public? someone said it discrimination to ask you to stop -is this true? sorry newbie firsttimer so no idea. But does seem just ridiculous to ask anyone to stop feeding their baby.

lisad123 · 21/04/2008 20:55

I feed my DD2 atleast once a week in my local costa!
So horrible for that mum.
From what I understand its inllegal for a cafe to ask you to stop

onepieceoflollipop · 21/04/2008 20:57

Only illegal in Scotland at the moment.

But outrageous that women feeding their babies continue to experience difficulties.

nametaken · 21/04/2008 21:27

Just refuse to leave! What are they gonna do?

theBOD · 21/04/2008 21:34

what's the problem?
surely if it is a private business they are perfectly entitled to set out the conditions of custom.
i know i wouldn't want to see someone breastfeeding while i was trying to enjoy my lunch.

lisad123 · 21/04/2008 21:37

well I dont like watching people eating their lunch, especially if they dont have manner. Im sorry if my baby needs feeding surely Im intitled to have a coffee while my baby has her drink

nametaken · 21/04/2008 21:39

theBOD!!!!!!!

The sight of a baby being breastfed would stop you from enjoying your lunch? Really?

Methinks you have ishoos.

Or do you think tits are just for mens amusement? You are a man arn't you? I'll be really depressed if your a woman

Kimi · 21/04/2008 21:41

If all BF mumsnetter would make their was to their local costa tomorrow at 11.am and feed baby as a protest do you think that would get the message across?

AbbeyA · 21/04/2008 21:41

We have now come out of the dark ages and women are allowed to bf their babies in public places! Costa coffee are not entitled to stop them. There is nothing to see, it is very discreet. It is a perfectly natural process-to say it would put you off lunch is ridiculous!
I don't think that it easy to refuse to leave, you feel very vulnerable with a new baby-it is the sort of thing that reduces you to tears very easily-not helped by insensitive members of the public who say it puts them off lunch.

bozza · 21/04/2008 21:43

The baby is 3 days old, she is discretely feeding it under her jacket and has already got over her fear of breastfeeding in public? Surely her milk was only really coming in properly at that stage?

Kimi · 21/04/2008 21:44

I always smile if I make eye contact with a BF mum, although I do feel a little awkward as I don't want them to think I am some sort of weirdo looking at their breasts

harpsichordcarrier · 21/04/2008 21:44

actually, in the dark ages it would have been perfectly normal to see a baby being bf anywhere.
in fact in any period in history tbh.

lisad123 · 21/04/2008 21:44

My Jaz isnt always discreet, if she hears a noise she pulls off and flashes my nips LOL
I guess I better go and hide away for fear of putting people off their lunch

Woollymummy · 21/04/2008 21:45

It just means we have to do mass invasions of Costa Coffees (slings only so they cannot chuck us out with the excuse of too many buggies) and just keep ordering lots of coffee and food, and then all whip out our boobs and feed at the same time (roughly) and see what they say. I think they might just admit that keeping the captive audience that is sleep-deprived, caffeine-starved, pastry eating mummies with big milk supplies to fulfil is actually quite profitable. I bet you anything I have a bigger appetite than some skinny strong-willed formula-feeding mummy So, which Costa Coffee can we invade first? I know my nearest can only accommodate about 20 people, should be easy to arrange some BF stroppiness....I now don't know if I am joking or not

HairyToe · 21/04/2008 21:45

So next time I'm in cafe or a restaurant I'm entitled to ask any of the other customers to stop doing whatever I decide is off-putting (coughing, sneezing, blowing nose, talking loudly, eating messily, breathing too noisily) or they have to leave? Or perhaps alternatively I could just pay attention to my own meal and company and take no notice of everyone else and what they might be doing.

AbbeyA · 21/04/2008 21:47

I decided that theBOD was a man-it would be very depressing if it was a woman.

lisad123 · 21/04/2008 21:50

woolmummy I would join ya, love their lemon muffins

hotCheeseBurns · 21/04/2008 21:51

I used to always head straight to Costa to breastfeed and the staff were always lovely! Maybe it was just one rogue member of staff?

theBOD · 21/04/2008 21:52

yes i am a man and no i don't thinki breasts are simply for mens enjoyment. i simply said i would not enjoy seeing it during my lunch.
i didn't say this meant breastfeeding in public should not be allowed, my point was that it is a private business and the decision should be left up to them to decide what is acceptable practice in their establishment once they act within the law.

nametaken · 21/04/2008 21:52

Oi, theBOD - be a real man and get over here and say sorry

ButterflyMcQueen · 21/04/2008 21:53

it was the 'customers complaining' not costa that get me

costa acted wrongly but jeez who would actually complain

policywonk · 21/04/2008 21:54

Costa have apologised and said that they are breastfeeding-friendly. It sounds like it was an unpleasant member of the public and an ignorant/easily led member of staff.

ButterflyMcQueen · 21/04/2008 21:54

the BOD 'would not enjoy seeing it over my lunch'

It is the babies lunch so get used to it
