This is of course an absolutely tragic event.
I'm feeling a bit mean by saying this.........but why is it the headline topic on BBC news?
I genuinely feel sorry for those involved, but don't understand why it's the dominant news story?

There's a good thread about this in a sub-reddit for sailors and yachties - lots of interesting expert knowledge on the engineering of the boat. Consensus last time I looked was that this is a combination of freak event and possible technical failure linked to the crazily tall mast. It is a very intriguing story though. Poor Hannah, RIP 😔.

Link?

News reports on ITV this morning are that the Italian authorities are looking at if there's criminal charges to be bought against the crew for having hatches open during the storm.

I'm not sure they've even proved there were open.

I just think it's an angle that brings in public interest.

Also reporting the next 24 hours are vital if anyone is managing to survive in an airlock. That would be amazing considering they've been 50m under water for 3 days.

I imagine we will soon find out it's cock-up not conspiracy.

The captain was 22, the (mostly) kids who crew these boats are lovely and personable but many are not sailors, they may even have done as little as a week's crew course. The industry is toxic and unregulated and many owners demand 24/7 on duty with little downtime.

I'm not saying this is the case here, and it's a terrible story, but it would not be surprising if we see that something had not been done correctly on the boat (doors left open, passengers not issued with life jackets for the anticipatory weather, etc...)

Thank you. I was immersed in the submersible and have been left without words by this tragedy! I used (many many moons ago to be involved in investigations of these unimaginable incidents- at the tail end of it as a reviewer so, many many coincidences do occur).

as we await details of the investigation, I too have been trying to understand a few things: ages, relationships with the yatch etc of the crew. Where they hired from another company? So if captain was 22; that is an important info as it is clear no 22 yo would feel brave to dictate to these super rich passengers things like close hatches at night especially when it was very hot. Too many helicopters with the rich onboard go down as they get piloted by these young ones.

glued to news for more tangible information/ facts of what exactly occurred. How wife left cabin but husband didn’t etc etc.

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/08/2024 09:38

Has the captain/any of the senior crew survived? I've not seen much about survivors apart from the wife of the billionaire and the mother and baby.

I guess if so they would hopefully be able to answer some questions about the keel, etc.

crumblingschools · 21/08/2024 09:41

@CormorantStrikesBack all crew bar the chef survived is my understanding. I assume because they wouldn’t have been in the cabins

The captain is reported as being 51.

Thank you. Makes sense. The mother of the baby said they only survived as they were on deck not in their cabins. Which seemed odd at that time of night, but maybe the baby had woken. Though still a bit odd to be on the deck in a storm with a baby. Maybe she was just awake so reacted quicker and got on deck as the boat started listing? But thank goodness for whatever reason she was able to get off..

The captain is reported as being 51 in the Telegraph and Times.

Seems a bit more plausible than a 22 yr old.

Thank you! I was shocked he was 22.

51 more plausible. But still too many egos of the super rich for even a mature and experienced crew to contain. I have been in some of these environments and many many rules are bent just to make these guests comfortable. Things like no smoking being waved just for them. Etc etc

Thanks. Much better!

I do know some wealthy people do insist in experts and professionals money can buy in everything they do. However, some are known to want to cut costs by all means!

I think you'd have to be spectacularly naive and/or dense not to see something fishy in this case.

Sharingsomewisdom · 21/08/2024 09:58

Oh thanks! Would have missed your link as you didn’t quote me . Yes, too many threads I am following on mn at moment.

i like facts and hearing from experts- so will read this with intrigue.

That was my fault, sorry! I had read in an earlier report he was 22. mea culpa

crumblingschools · 21/08/2024 10:01

@CormorantStrikesBack I think it was a very hot night, hence the reason they think some of the hatches/doors were open. If the storm came on quickly maybe mum and baby were on deck trying to get cool and then the storm hit

No doubt you think Jay Slater was pushed off the cliff and Nicola Bulleys body was planted in the river after she'd been killed elsewhere

Sad for the rest of us that we don t have your higher levels of intellect

Of are you making some kind of pun on the word fishy?

roses2 · 21/08/2024 10:08

Jay Slater was pushed off the cliff and Nicola Bulleys body was planted in the river

Jay Slater was high on drugs and Nicola Bulley was already at high risk of suicide. Their deaths were plausible given the circumstances.

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/08/2024 10:13

@8008Bee I know lots of people walk on country roads - I live near the countryside too. But this is a fast stretch of road with no pavements, whereas the road through the fields the other side of the village does have pavements. It's next to fields, likely space to run on the edge of the field rather than in the road unless it's very overgrown at the moment.

We get people running on the country roads near us and I think they're idiots too. A 60mph road is not a place for runners.

SheilaFentiman · 21/08/2024 10:28

The mum said she and the baby were sleeping on deck. Possibly the kid fell asleep after watching the sunset or whatever at the end of a busy day and the mum just bedded down next to her, or their aircon unit was too loud in the cabin, or the kid was restless and her parents took turns letting the other sleep, any other reason really.

Exactly, that's my point, but obvious explanations like that don't stop conspiracy theorists making up bollocks, I was replying to the poster who is sure there is some nefarious reason for a disaster at sea

Thank you. Have had a read! All seems a combination of unfortunate factors occurring simultaneously. We are all waiting for facts to emerge to learn what exactly happened.

This boat sunk in a storm.

What's Implausible about that?!

The chap killed by the car probably wouldn’t have made the news if it wasn’t for the sinking of this boat

The chap killed by the car has a fucking name! If you are going to speak about a families tragedy, at least have the grace to know the victims name🤬

RIP Steve Chamberlain

Boats don't normally sink in a storm. There must have been a further factor(s) to lead to this, which I have no doubt the maib will find when the investigation is concluded.

Often, a seemingly small story is given prominence by news editors when there are whispers that there are bigger things afoot.

Do you think the CCTV footage of the yacht in the storm just before it sank is fake?

@Fuckthisshitt

i haven't seen that. As I clearly said I was going by the reporter on the scene who was on the RADIO
