Sinking of Yacht off Sicilian Coast

This is of course an absolutely tragic event.
I'm feeling a bit mean by saying this.........but why is it the headline topic on BBC news?
I genuinely feel sorry for those involved, but don't understand why it's the dominant news story?

The storm isn't made up but organising a yacht trip with projected shitty weather is plausible.

Don't know but it is very strange the other guy died two days ago.

Marcipex · 20/08/2024 22:46

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but this is too strange.

So you think that someone conjured up a storm, and a water spout that occurred exactly where that particular yacht was?

Projected shitty weather happens every single day and yachts don't sink. This happened because of a freak water spout. No-one could predict that.

Gooselady · 20/08/2024 23:15

The only way it could have been done intentionally would be if someone had weakened the mast to make it more likely that it would topple in a storm, unbalancing the boat and sending it under.

I think this would be very unlikely. It was clearly just a freak accident.

TokyoSushi · 20/08/2024 23:15

It's a pretty big story... the boat, the freak weather, the people who were on it, the court case, the death of the co defendant... quite a lot going on there.

RosiePerfume · 20/08/2024 23:16

So sad about the 18 year old girl who had a place at Cambridge University. To study English . She had the whole of her life to look forward to.

Ringerphone · 20/08/2024 23:16

Agreed. Sad but….who cares?

RosiePerfume · 20/08/2024 23:16

ZenNudist · 20/08/2024 22:45

So just divine retribution?

Why because he was wealthy ?

Perfectlystill · 20/08/2024 23:18

It's all a terribly sad story.

Marcipex · 20/08/2024 23:22

I don’t think anyone can conjure a storm, no… but I think it’s a hell of a coincidence.
Could the yacht have been sabotaged so that it heeled over very easily? I don’t know.

invisiblecat · 20/08/2024 23:22

Franjipanl8r · 20/08/2024 23:05

If you know anything about boats this is a really big news story. This was a mega yacht - significantly bigger than a normal boat. The mast on this yacht was 75m high, the height of around a 22 storey building. Think of the titanic of sailing yachts.

So you have an absolutely ginormous yacht, and it sank in around 60 seconds - which is totally unheard of. There’s going to be a big enquiry into why this happened and that’s before even considering the tragic loss of human life and the status of who was on board.

I saw the photo of that yacht on the BBC website below a headline asking what caused it to sink, and looking at it - well it's no wonder really. The proportions of it looked unnervingly wrong to me, and the huge mast made it look top-heavy. It didn't look like it would cope with bad weather all that well.

Ringerphone · 20/08/2024 23:16

Agreed. Sad but….who cares?

‘No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.’

It could all be incredibly horrible coincidence but he also owned a cybersecurity firm.

nearlylovemyusername · 20/08/2024 23:33

Ringerphone · 20/08/2024 23:16

Agreed. Sad but….who cares?

Really? applying the same logic - who cares about Jay Slater? and many other people who made news for very sad reasons?

Franjipanl8r · 20/08/2024 23:38

Ringerphone · 20/08/2024 23:16

Agreed. Sad but….who cares?

You might want to take a “am I a psychopath” test. You’ll find most normal people care about the needless loss of human life.

Nanana1 · 20/08/2024 23:38

It could all be incredibly horrible coincidence but he also owned a cybersecurity firm.

It is, the person driving the car was a local who stopped at the scene.

Boredshitless1 · 20/08/2024 23:55

At work this evening we all agree that the coincidence of Mike Lynch and the death of his co defendant is beyond coincidence. Everyone who has died were very influential and wealthy. Were they pissed/ drug induced, not to save themselves?
Our thoughts were, did the others ,crew ,wife of Mike lynch and mother of baby escape because they were capable of saving themselves! All the crew barring the chef were also ok to save themselves.

notanotheronenow · 20/08/2024 23:57

It's basically the plot of the TV series Riviera and that ran for two seasons, so there will be more to come yet.

PodgePie · 20/08/2024 23:59

August is a notoriously slow media month as parliament & the Royals are on holiday so they don’t have all the normal news to feed off.

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 00:01

Hazydetailonlife · 20/08/2024 22:35

And his co defendant was killed in Cambridge on Saturday. I think that’s very very strange

@Hazydetailonlife

i tend to agree. Very sus, especially listening to people on boats next to them saying how it just went straight down quickly. A ship of that size & weight doesn't just go down by itself.

i feel so sorry for his wife, I'd rather not have been rescued than deal with losing my DH & daughter like that. Poor woman.

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 00:05

fashionqueen0123 · 20/08/2024 22:35

Also the other guy in the case died from a car crash. So I guess now it’s going to become a conspiracy theory for some people but I don’t even think they can create storms!

@fashionqueen0123

none of the other boats around them suffered from the storm.... yes, most of them were sheltering from the storm and anchoring a safe distance from the other boats.

I'm very sure they're going to find it was a man made sinking

XelaM · 21/08/2024 00:06

fedupoftheheatnow · 20/08/2024 22:49

Mike Lynch's daughter

I thought it's his lawyer's daughter?

Toddlerteaplease · 21/08/2024 00:07

I wondered why it was being given such a large chunk of the 6 o clock news. No idea who the person is that's missing.

Clafoutie · 21/08/2024 00:09

Ringerphone · 20/08/2024 23:16

Agreed. Sad but….who cares?

Not you, obviously. 🙄

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 00:09

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/08/2024 22:43

FFS, it's a coincidence. Tragic but a horrible accident. The storm and waterspout were witnessed by multiple people including local sailors and fishermen.

@EmmaGrundyForPM

snd they have all said it was calm
where they were and it didn't list it just suddenly & quickly vanished. Boats that size don't do that by themselves
