This is of course an absolutely tragic event.
I'm feeling a bit mean by saying this.........but why is it the headline topic on BBC news?
I genuinely feel sorry for those involved, but don't understand why it's the dominant news story?

OP posts:
Guavafish1 · 21/08/2024 00:10

It’s all very very coincidental

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 00:13

Ringerphone · 20/08/2024 23:16

Agreed. Sad but….who cares?

@Ringerphone

have some common decency. I hope his wife doesn't ever read your seful
post, she's just lost her husband & daughter

Theimpossiblegirl · 21/08/2024 00:14

Oh come on.
If someone really wanted to kill them they wouldn't have been so obvious as to do it so close together or dramatically.
It's a really sad coincidence.

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 00:14

XelaM · 21/08/2024 00:06

I thought it's his lawyer's daughter?

@XelaM no it's ML's daughter, his wife (Hannah's Mum) was rescued. Poor poor woman.

Boredshitless1 · 21/08/2024 00:21

I am genuinely not a tinfoil type of person but the coincidences are remarkable.
Barring the chef ,the people who sadly died were the wealthy ,the survivors were ,mother and baby ,wife of Mike Lynch and all the crew…just all a bit odd . The guy who died in car accident was Mikes co defendant. Maybe a massive coincidence but…

Tillow4ever · 21/08/2024 00:25

It really is extremely coincidental - what are the actual odds of them both dying 48 hours apart in freak accidents? As the very wise Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, once said "there are two things I don't believe in - coincidences and leprechauns".

That said, I really, really don't know how they could have created the yacht accident - but I've read enough mystery novels to know where there is a will (and a shitload of money) there's a way!

I do feel awful for the families of everyone who has lost someone on there, I can't imagine what they're going through right now.

Iasonnas · 21/08/2024 00:28

"How you create a freak tornado/ storm but I'm not sure but it may well be possible"

Jesus wept

It was headline news on RTE in Ireland on Tuesday which I found really strange.

crumblingschools · 21/08/2024 00:30

I guess they could have gone out in the storm knowing they shouldn’t and scuttled the boat somehow. The waterspout then helped things along

I’m calling it. This is the stupidest comment of the lot. They didn’t “go out” in the storm, they were at anchor.

crumblingschools · 21/08/2024 00:55

When was the weather warning announced?

crumblingschools · 21/08/2024 01:08

@Franjipanl8r and I don’t honestly believe that is what happened, just musing what conspiracy theory could be. I assume crew were awake hence they were amongst the survivors (apart from the chef) and most of the guests were in their cabins and couldn’t get out in time

Thisreallyhurts · 21/08/2024 01:11

Coincidence is a thing folks, it really is. Just marvel at the odds and buy a lottery ticket As a PP said, if someone had had it in for them, why such a big stunt?

Inlaw · 21/08/2024 01:19

Yes I have been looking at this. It keeps coming up. It is absolutely uncanny!

If it’s not a rich person revenge conspiracy then it’s very final destination. I think the latter is probably more terrifying so it’s no surprise the papers are running with this. It’s jaw on the floor stuff.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 21/08/2024 01:36

It is terribly sad for everyone involved. I would have some questions re the crew and know I base it off reality shows, but I don't understand why they weren't in port with such bad weather or why they weren't woken up and given life jackets for example. It doesn't change what happened though.

MeAgainAndAgain · 21/08/2024 01:41

I read somewhere that the boat sunk within two minutes so probably there was no time for life jackets etc.

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 01:53

crumblingschools · 21/08/2024 00:55

When was the weather warning announced?

@crumblingschools

A woman on the radio who is there (I think she's a reporter) was saying that the weather is constantly changing ' impossible to forecast (climate change like most everywhere just now) one minute calm blue skies, 45 minutes later black skies, storms etc. so the weather warning are changing all the time.

nut life/business has to go on, some of the boats were sheltering & some were scheduled stops.

SheilaFentiman · 21/08/2024 07:23

When it comes down to it, I think we will find that the people who died were largely in cabins or other closed rooms and those moving freely around were safer. The woman and her baby who survived were sleeping on deck.

Nothing to do with “being too drunk to swim to safety” 🙄

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 21/08/2024 07:27

Hazydetailonlife · 20/08/2024 22:35

And his co defendant was killed in Cambridge on Saturday. I think that’s very very strange

Yep, was coming to say the same thing. Most odd…

SheilaFentiman · 21/08/2024 07:28

crumblingschools · 20/08/2024 22:52

The chap killed by the car probably wouldn’t have made the news if it wasn’t for the sinking of this boat

He would have done, but 5th “breaking story” down

”Autonomy co-founder fatally struck by car whilst jogging”

And that would have been it.

SheilaFentiman · 21/08/2024 07:31

To answer the OP’s question: sinking of mega yacht whilst safely moored in freak weather event - search for survivors would have got headlines even without Lynch.

Like the loss of the Oceangate submersible.

It’s been replaced today by the Democratic convention.

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 21/08/2024 07:31

They were both acquitted weren’t they?

ReadWithScepticism · 21/08/2024 07:33

I share the OP's surprise about the intensity of the coverage. In addition to the BBC's treatment of it I was struck by the fact that The Guardian gave breathless updates about it all day long yesterday in its 'live' slot, which it placed in the top position on its front page.
It is a very tragic event and I feel for all those involved, but I feel that the media is overvaluing the 'dramatic' features: unusual storm event, super-rich people, glamorous yacht. They are allowing those features to trick them into treating this accident as more significant than the many other deaths at sea, such as deaths of ordinary working crew or impoverished asylum seekers

SheilaFentiman · 21/08/2024 07:35

@ReadWithScepticism I agree. Same was true of the titanic submersible.

But freak events are always more newsworthy than the daily grind of lost refugees at sea :-(

DonnaGiovanna · 21/08/2024 07:36

There's a good thread about this in a sub-reddit for sailors and yachties - lots of interesting expert knowledge on the engineering of the boat. Consensus last time I looked was that this is a combination of freak event and possible technical failure linked to the crazily tall mast. It is a very intriguing story though. Poor Hannah, RIP 😔.
