Absolutely shocking. A 26 year old man named as Kyle Clifford, believed to be armed with a crossbow, is being sought by police.
The dead women are aged 61, 28 and 25.

Two of his daughters were murdered, one was not so if it just said two daughters were killed it didn't identify who the survivor was. Regardless of that a family was distraught about three members of that family who had been murdered and people can't respect their wishes? How lovely.

I don't actually know how to express this more clearly.

In media, if a victim has been officially "named" that means the name has been released and can be used. There is almost always a standalone article or update that specifically says something like: Headline: Murder victims named Story: The names of the victims in yesterday's triple homicide have now been released. Carol Hunt, 63, and her two daughters, Louise Hunt (28) and Hanna Hunt (25) were found dead in their home after what is believed to have been a crossbow attack by a man known to the family."

In this case, at least one article with the headline, "Victims named" still did not bother to name the two daughters, but only Carol Hunt. The two daughters were still being referred to as "John's daughters".

There is absolutely no sign whatsoever that media were avoiding using the daugther's names out of respect. Not LEAST, because the only reason NOT to use names is to maintain privacy. That ship had sailed because we all already knew it was John Hunt's wife and two of his daughters.

I studied journalism. I work in media. I consume a lot of media and over and over again, the way in which women are referenced is different. One of my all time favourites really I hate it being things like doctors. A story about a doctor who is a man will refer to him as Dr Smith throughout. A story about a doctor who is a woman will refer to her as Mary or Mrs Jones. This happens a LOT.

Unless you know otherwise why drag the parents into it.

If you have 2 kids who are murdered I think your family is bound to fall under scrutiny.

Something is very wrong, there.

Do you mean if you have two children who are murderers?

It is true that being female doesn't stop a person from being bad.
But being female makes a person significantly less likely to be bad.
The overwhelming majority of bad people are men.

I can't remember where I read it but at least one organisation referenced it.

You know because you can do something it doesn't mean you have to do it. How hard is it to contain your excitement at being able to name the victims when the family want a little time before that happens?

First of all, you can't fucking say that.
Second, what does "Islamic" look like?

Oh. My. Word. You are so determined not to get this. It's starting to be funny.

FYI seeing as you can't remember where you saw it and obviously didn't absorb it properly when you did - the issue with the family being unhappy is that the fact that it was John Hunt's wife and daughters (ie that they were known, without officially being "named") is what was complained about because even without the name, a news article saying, "John Hunt's wife and daughters" meant that members of the family found out potentially from news reports before the identities had been officially released.

I 100% agree that this is a problem. And it's just another side of the coin where we are so quick to reference women in respect of a man. In this case, this was worse because the man is famous - so a) the stories were bigger and out there more quickly and b) the identites of the women were de-facto known. This is vs when the murder victims are the wife and daughters of, for example, a local Gp where the headline might be ""Local GP's wife and daughters found murdered" which irritates me from a feminist perspective but would not have necessarily provided any real information as to the identities of the victim to anyone reading these stories.

In this case, I have been specifically talking about once the names were officially released and the fact that at that point, the focus is STILL on their relationship to a man and that their names were not even included in the case of Hanna and Louise.

TorturedPoetsDepartmentAnthology · 11/07/2024 14:29

They could ensure they spell the names right!

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 11/07/2024 14:38

Good point. My apologies. my journalism professors would be unimpressed. Hannah!

(I have a friend called Hanna. I default to no H).

I'm going to guess that the deleted post was some racist shite.

Islam isn't the reason why some Muslim men rape and kill. Muslim women don't do those things. The problem is men being men.

As Tuesday's appalling brutality has shown us, white men will murder too. The problem is men being men.

CaveMum · 11/07/2024 15:29

Across the globe, regardless of race, nationality, religion, etc men are always more violent than women. Research has shown that when you look at the violent crime statistics in each country there is always a gulf of difference between the men and women in that country, even though it may mean that, for example, the women from the country with the highest violent crime statistics might be more violent than a man from the country with the lowest violent crime statistics.

There was an episode of The Infinite Monkey Cage which looked into this as well as other sex-based issues, back in 2016 when Robin Ince knew what a woman was.

BBC reporting that the perpetrator is in a serious condition in hospital, my own assumption that he has self inflicted injuries.

I hope he survives but has horrible injuries and he suffers every bloody day of his life.

Rather deserved, as there'd be an outcry if a man dared say 'women are awful'!

Some people (people, not men or women) are awful - that's the sad truth. Gender doesn't stop people being bad.

Why are you so determined to dismiss facts? What is that all about? What other facts do you dismiss or is it reserved only for this particular subject?

I couldn't care less what men say about us between themselves.

What i DO care about is their inability to choose to NOT rape, molest, assault, stalk, upskirt, grope, murder and otherwise abuse us, when they could make different choices. But the inability of males - as a sex, not all individuals - to manage their emotions and disputes without terrorising women and girls in the process gets right up my nose and makes me despair for my own daughters' futures.
98% of violence is carried out by males. If they don't like us pointing it out perhaps they could fucking pack it in?

It depends in what way.

The most physically damaging and brutal gender is male.

I would say that the most cruellest and emotionally damaging gender is female.

I work in a company. I'm in one team with a female boss. The other team had a male boss. The male boss is always so kind amy nice. My female boss is a tyrant, cruel and abusive. Everyone on her team including myself is applying for other jobs as we can't take her abuse

Every female boss I've ever had has been like this. I would have enjoyed so many jobs if it wasn't for the women who worked there

notathenabutcassandra · 11/07/2024 17:43

@Kellyanne555 There's a slight difference. Men are scared women will laugh at them. Women are scared men will kill them.

For good reason.

So a woman can be a bit rude and you think that negates all the murdering that men do?

I have a feeling he is going to pass away. I really really hope not. I hope he has to answer, and suffer, for what he has done.

@Kellyanne555 I dont know about that, it doesn't align with my personal experiences but I'm very sorry to hear of your experiences🙏
