Absolutely shocking. A 26 year old man named as Kyle Clifford, believed to be armed with a crossbow, is being sought by police.
The dead women are aged 61, 28 and 25.

In Clodagh's case, what peaked my rage was that the killer's family and the church were determined to have him buried with her and the children. It took a national outcry to stop it.

He was a good family man, you see, despite brutally murdering them all.

OMFG, it's like living in a dystopian nightmare.

The Rector of Bushey has said “This might sound strange but [this tragedy] has actually strengthened the community and brought it together, which is a wonderful thing. We realise that we are just one big family.”

Whilst I understand his intentions, it's quite a thoughtless comment. There is nothing wonderful here.

What an idiot. Nice for them maybe. What about the victims and the two immediate family members left behind, nothing wonderful for them.

I remember that. It was as though some accident had sadly befallen the whole family, not that the man of the house made a decision to slaughter his wife and children.

My feeling is that this is to do with an impulse to protect the reputation of the head of the family.
I think that the impulse is probably largely unconscious and stems from times when human society was organized in clans or tribes.
In a setup like this your best bet for staying safe/getting on in life was to align yourself with the big man who controlled everything.
I think this is also part of why people often unthinkingly just obey whoever is in power.

He was initially buried with them and Clodagh's family spoke out afterwards saying they had been pressured (by the Church, surprise surprise) to agree. I believe he was exhumed about 8 months later and his body cremated, with the ashes given to his family.

You're right, I'd misremembered. Appalling either way.

FFS. Some people really are completely clueless.

HappierTimesAhead · 11/07/2024 12:54

The church (in the widest possible sense) has a long history of contributing to and minimising the suffering of women. Our deaths are used as tools to achieve their own aims. Absolute fuckers.

Just awful. The murderer's family claimed they had no say in where he was buried, but how can that be? As next of kin it would have been their doing.

They tend to forget that anger is an emotion.

Man who believes in invisible man in the sky within a male-dominated hierarchy in "says ridiculous offensive comment capitalising on male violence and women's deaths" shocker.

Rule 5: "Women and Feminism must be useful to men or they are worthless."

Hey, these women were tortured and murdered but it brought our community together so that's OK.

the comments about “this doesn’t happen in bushey”

I understand the sentiment, but up and down the country women are killed and abused in every town, in every city. It does happen in bushey. It will happen tonight, tomorrow and next week. Thankfully the brutality and scale with this one is rare.

Rather deserved, as there'd be an outcry if a man dared say 'women are awful'!

Some people (people, not men or women) are awful - that's the sad truth. Gender doesn't stop people being bad.

But most bad people are men.
If the don't like that being point out, they should stop being so bad.

"Gender" (by which you mean sex) may not stop people being bad, but the overwhelming majority of the bad people are of one particular sex and we should not be criticised for saying as much.

When women are 98% of killers and not men, then you can have your little victory and say 'women are awful'.

ABeaver8MyThumb · 11/07/2024 13:12

Men frequently talk about how awful women are. If that was the worst they did to us, I'm sure most of us would be jumping for joy.

Men say women are awful all the time (we have a number of posters on here whose sole purpose is to pop up every time we discuss an act of male violence or abuse to tell us women are awful - and they never see the significance of having so many opportunities) and then we get blamed for the resulting "outcry". Women are criticised more for commenting on male violence than men are for committing it.

Must be amazing to see stories like this and only have to worry about your PR.

CaveMum · 11/07/2024 13:23

I know she's not everyone's cup of tea, but this tweet from Dr Jess Taylor sums things up well for me:

"Before everyone starts suggesting that maybe Kyle Clifford was ‘suffering from mental health issues’ which ‘caused him’ to tie up and shoot three women, let me shoot some facts here:

There is not a single mental disorder listed or described in the DSM which states that it causes murder

Not a single mental health charity would put their name to a public statement which stated that MH was associated with committing murder - in fact they would probably do the opposite

Men kill women because they want to

Men kill women because they get something out of it

Men kill women because of their misogyny and male entitlement

Men kill women because they enjoy it

Men kill women because we do absolutely nothing about the toxic, abusive, misogynistic, pro-violence and pro-abuse society we raise them in

Men kill women because there are virtually zero consequences and less than 2% conviction rate for domestic and sexual violence crimes

People only claim men who murder are mentally ill for TWO reasons:

To defend the suspect legally, in order to claim insanity, so charges or sentences can be lessened

To psychologically distance ourselves from their actions, so no one has to accept that this is a social and systemic problem of violence and abuse - and we can all go on pretending that it was another ‘one-off’ caused by ‘mental illness’

End.

@MaidOfAle

'My 10 year old daughter overheard me listening to the news and asked me why that man killed those women, what do I tell her? How do I prepare her and her younger sister for what is to come.'

'I am crying because your situation is impossible. It breaks my heart.

I was called names upthread for saying that I chose not to have kids in part because I didn't want to bring a daughter into this world. I knew at eight how awful men could be because two boys sexually assaulted me at school and I decided in my teens never to bring children into this world because of that. I knew that I could never handle the situation you are in.

I fear for your daughters and I feel despair towards men'

It does seem impossible. Things get a bit better for women and a bit worse.

I don't blame you for choosing to not have children, I really am at a loss and I am sorry you have had the experiences you have at the hands of men or boys.

I feel like I'm only starting to realise what men really think of us, even the good ones. The attitude if we are raped that it's almost expected 'that's a shame'. When we are murdered it's a case of 'it's not all of us doing the murdering', and that's somehow supposed to be good enough. I cannot fathom why men don't care, other than it must benefit them so they are fine with that. It keeps us in our place, even if we are their wives and daughters. The sadness of this realisation is hard to bear.

God that was the final straw wasn't it? As a nation our collective blood was boiling & riightly so, some people, his family, the church, refused to take their blinkers off & recognize that monster for what he did & who he was behind the "respectable" facade

Rules 10 and 12 in one post. Impressive.

10. The worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad.
12. Women’s ability to recognize male behavior patterns is misandry.

They named John Hunt. These women were identified. Everyone knew who they were. A story that says, "The women in the murders have been named. John Hunt's wife, carol, and their daughters". FFS. There was nothing here about not releasing their identities.

People asking not to be named is about preserving anonymity. There was none of that here. Why is this so hard to understand ?

Totally different if the headlines were, "Three women have been killed. Their identities are not being released at the request of their surviving family."

Two of his daughters were murdered, one was not so if it just said two daughters were killed it didn't identify who the survivor was. Regardless of that a family was distraught about three members of that family who had been murdered and people can't respect their wishes? How lovely.

Yes. And i also feel for the paramedics who had to attend. Taking in that horrific scene then doing all they could to try and save them

My DIL was first paramedic on scene at a well publicised murder scene not that long ago. It affected her very very much (children involved too).
I think we must always remember how much they have to deal with for how little pay.

CaveMum · 11/07/2024 13:41

They've just paid a lovely tribute to Carol, Hannah, Louise, and John on ITV Racing with a minute's silence also being observed at Newmarket ahead of their first race.

A very emotional Richard Hoiles, racecourse commentator and colleague of John's talked about how at every annual get together over the 20 years they had worked together John would take out photos of his girls and talk about what they were doing at school, etc. Just such a waste.

Awful women kill a whole less people than awful men do.
