Absolutely shocking. A 26 year old man named as Kyle Clifford, believed to be armed with a crossbow, is being sought by police.
The dead women are aged 61, 28 and 25.

Those poor women must have been terrified in their final moments. My heart goes out to John and family and their friends. This is just awful. 😢

I saw a chilling video of the killer walking back to his car with the crossbow wrapped under his arm. I hope he gets a rough time in prison.

I know. But there will always be NAMALTs. So what are we going to do? Always allow a thread that should be about remembering the women who were murdered become a thread for arguing?

I don't think it's possible to decouple mourning femicide victims from discussing femicide. Even with no NAMALTers, we'd still discuss male pattern violence because the thread is about victims of male pattern violence.

Fucking hell, men are awful

That's a bit of a sweeping generalisation???

YellowAsteroid · 10/07/2024 20:49

Prawncow · 10/07/2024 15:49

You’ve met rapists, you’ve met paedophiles, you’ve met men who beat their wives. You may well have met men who will go on to murder. These people don’t walk around with warning signs flashing over their heads. You wouldn’t pick them out of a crowd. They’re your neighbour, your co-worker, the teacher at your child’s school, the GP you’re trying to get an appointment to see.

Indeed @Prawncow

I told this story of the Neil Gaiman thread (it's one bloody misogynist violent man after another at the moment). I used to work with a perfectly pleasant man; in fact, I'd have thought of him as fairly gentle & easy-going. A good colleague.

He suddenly disappeared, and his computer was whisked away. We were told he would not be returning but given no other information - unusual in my workplace where jobs are hard fought for & people don't just up & leave with no notice.

Two years later, I saw the newspaper report: he'd been convicted of rape (underage girl in nasty awful circumstances) and child pornography. He was a paedophile; he looked and acted as a normal person in the workplace.

It really is that ordinary and that horrible.

MartyFunkhouser · 10/07/2024 20:50

What has happened is horrendous but this thread is batshit.

No it's right. Men as a class of people are fucking awful. There are lots of lovely men within that but as a class they are fucking awful. Responsible for the vast majority of the world's woes.

Yes. It's really sad, but true.

I thought this. My initial reaction was “why bother?” but then you know “why bother”. I thought of a friend of mine who’s a doctor who has daughters and I know that if it was her, she’d be grimly determined that he wouldn’t be slipping away if there was a single thing she could do to keep him on the planet.

RIP those beautiful, innocent women. Their poor loved ones 💔

This. The perpetrator's suicide is a final "fuck you" to deny his victim's family justice.

I dont think it can be decoupled either. Any more than you can discuss school shootings without mentioning guns.

I don’t post very often but I am truly sickened by some of the posts on here, This is a truly dreadful event but no good comes from class blame. By far the overwhelming majority of men are decent caring and considerate people. The only way we can ever root out those who are not is to accept this truth.

And I'll bet good money that at some point he said "look what you made me do" Angry

That's after sending a chill down my spine because I'm sure you're right

We don't know the victims personally so we are not here to remember them, surely? It's also about avoiding more of this so NAMALT must be challenged.

BustyCrustacean · 10/07/2024 20:58

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/07/2024 20:30

I wish we could have a thread to honour the three women killed without in-fighting, on Mumsnet of all places. I wish HQ would moderate the threads more actively and delete the offensive posts. I've found it really hard to read the threads today and find most of the posting is tit for tatting, as usual.

Violence against women by men is endemic in all societies and beyond horrific and shameful. There's no argument. If someone says NAMALT just step over it or argue with them on another thread. Educate them another day. Today is not the time or place.

I feel gutted for the 3 women who faced that fucker. I'm slightly pleased he's not dead and is going to face justice.

And of course I feel gutted for the men left behind who loved them.

absolutely well said

I think you have this back to front. The independent states that 93% of murders are by men.
The ONS says that in the year to March 23 twice as many men are murdered as women. Women are more likely to be killed by someone they know.

We don't know what happened to Jay Slater but if he was murdered it is almost certain that he has been killed by a man.

I think you misunderstood my post - sorry, I should have been clearer. My point is that when a man goes missing, nobody expects to hear that he's been killed by a woman. When a woman goes missing, one of the first fears people have is that a man has killed her.

Strong disagree

We start to root out male violence by naming it what it is.

Clearly the statistics support that male violence against women is a serious problem in the UK.

Its fine to call men out on this.

The truly decent men recognise they're not personally being called out but that a problem is being named.

The lack of recognition and acceptance of "class blame" is a root part of the reason women keep being murdered by men known to them at a rate that has not decreased in the last 50 years.

Ask men to stop being violent. Don't ask women to stop talking about it.

The statistics show that there’s clearly an issue with men and violence against women.

Shrieking that not all men are the problem isn’t going to ‘root out’ shit.

All men, even the decent ones, benefit from male violence against women. Mechanism explained here.

I quite agree that there is a problem with male violence against women but it is simply wrong to blame the male sex in general. Imagine stereotyping on a racial basis. All this leaves me feeling quite sorry for the huge majority of perfectly lovely men.

Teacherprebaby · 10/07/2024 21:05

Some men ARE like that and that's the f**king problem!

Weird.

Its the women in cases such as these that I truly feel sorry for.

In which case you have no business on this thread as being a victim of a crime like this is infinitely worse than ‘feeling picked on by women for being male’ and that’s where your sympathies should be
