Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

The paps are vile, that's a given here.
Their security detail did not handle this well it would appear.

But their spokesperson delivered an utterly ridiculous PR statement that is now the talking point of the situation. If that statement had not been delivered in such a hyperbolic fashion, eyebrows would not be being raised with associated comments from the Authorities in NY contradicting the content of the statement etc etc. Then their spokesperson even delivers another statement saying he doesn't believe that any member of the royal family have been in touch.
This really is not good or helpful PR for them.

SidekickSylvia · 18/05/2023 10:24

All of Hollywood must be laughing at their sheer desperation for publicity. I honestly don't know how anyone can fall for ridiculous stunts like this.

tigger2022 · 18/05/2023 10:24

@friendlycat agreed, it’s one of those things where 2 things can be true. It was very intrusive, I certainly would have found that quite scary, however their statement (which they chose to issue to the public) was exaggerated. They should expect by now that their accusations will be fact-checked & those accused or implicated will be invited to give their own version of events.

Freefall212 · 18/05/2023 10:28

One of the oddest parts to me is that they put out the first statement to draw attention to it. Usually celebs would put out a response after a news story or a police statement or viral clips online or the pap videos and pics were getting traction. For them to be the one initiating bringing this into the news and then doing so in such a dramatic fashion makes it very unusual in celeb land.

Whaeanui · 18/05/2023 10:28

No it wasn’t. They were concerned about pedestrians being hit. Their security provided when she was in Canada, also said the same thing.

Jennifer Lopez has said she’s scared the paps will kill her like they did Diana before. Is she exaggerating too? It is not uncommon for celebrities to complain about paparazzi and say they’re scared of them. Why is it exaggerated only when it happens to M & H?

Because pictures were released and then they put out a statement and the pictures suddenly disappeared. So it seems like they put out a statement in response to the images.

Harry and Meghan are scared that pedestrians might be killed but JLo is worried she might be killed. 🙄 Sounds about right. Did she really link herself to Diana?

Whaeanui · 18/05/2023 10:34

She linked herself to what happened to her, yes. I think the way paps treat Jennifer Lopez is horrendous though and she’s right to be scared.

That’s correct.

The images and articles were pulled very quickly and they’ve made a statement about why they pulled them.

Nothing personal meant. Just an observation on how different interpretations of the word 'swarm' can shape the interpretation of an event.

Yes, like 'near catastrophe' - I first heard it on the radio and initially and fleetingly wondered if they'd been in a car crash but survived, and thought 'cripes!'

I looked at the written reports and realised that there had been no crash, no collision, no high speed pursuit, and no arrests of anyone for breaking traffic regulations or disturbing the peace. At that point I did feel that the spokesperson's use of language had been deliberately manipulative and that this was foolish, for a few reasons.

  1. This media statement was the first inkling anyone had about this happening - I suspect we'd otherwise had been none the wiser
  2. Rightly or wrongly, it has left many people feeling a bit duped
  3. It may well put the Sussexes in 'boy who cried wolf' territory
  4. It gives away too many details of their security arrangements, including obvious weak spots

If this is genuinely true, and there were ‘nearly fatal’ incidents involving pedestrians, it makes the NYPD look completely incompetent that there were no arrests.

The first reports were of ‘unknown’ blacked out vehicles following them and driving erratically.

This now appears to have been their own security team?

Totally agree with all this.
There are hundreds of ‘near catastrophic’ incidents on the roads hourly, by that reasoning.

The language used was deliberately emotive, and doesn’t accurately reflect the incident it seems

Whaeanui · 18/05/2023 10:12

Yup it’s pretty scary. Remember when little Suri Cruise used to cry as a kid about the paps? Horrible.
Even the taxi drivers statement has been reframed. This is what he said:
*I was on 67th Street and then the security guard hailed me. Next thing you know, Prince Harry and his wife were hopping into my cab," he said.
"We got blocked by a garbage truck, and all of a sudden paparazzi came and started taking pictures." Harry and Meghan were about to share their destination when the security guard made the call to return to the police precinct.
"They looked nervous, I think they were being chased the whole day or something," Mr Singh said. "They were pretty nervous, but the security guard, he was on it."

Yes, also that taxi driver was only 10 minutes involved in this 2hr fiasco. Even the footage with him in it shows lost of flashes.

The pics were in the British tabloids before the statement.

Those pics look eerily like Diana's last pics.

They are a laughing stock, so desperate for attention like toddlers! How could anyone fall for these antics?

TrashyPanda · 18/05/2023 10:47

Nobody ever talked about “Princess Wallis”, did they?

and she was married to a former King who retained his status as a Prince of the U.K. up9n abdication.

TrashyPanda · 18/05/2023 10:51

And wtf did none of them think to put on a seatbelt in this situation?

if you are scared a collision with a pedestrian/other vehicle might occur, surely you take this basic step to give yourself a bit of safety?

for most people, putting on a seatbelt is an automatic reaction when they get into a vehicle. Why didn’t their security team insist on this?

jeffgoldblum · 18/05/2023 10:55

I thought this was in the RF topic for a moment!
It all seems rather strange and exaggerated, no idea what's going on! .

polkadotdalmation · 18/05/2023 10:55

No one is denying there were photographers there or that they were taking photos. It's the over dramatising of events, and the ridiculous statement their spokesperson issued. What is the big issue about arriving at a friends house and going in? Why the secrecy? Do they think paparazzi will be camped out for weeks on end? Presumably it was a short stay with friends then home to the kids. If the privacy of the friends was so important they should have stayed in an hotel. Odd behaviour all round. But it got them the publicity they wanted.

There was one there but it got deleted by MNHQ 😂. This one is saying exactly the same things.

Fizbosshoes · 18/05/2023 10:57

I haven't RTFT and I'm probably missing something amazingly obvious, but I'm unsure why paps follow celebs in cars...? There are usually no clear pics , they will (presumably) have got decent pics at whatever event it was when they were ready, willing and posing for pics, why would they want out of focus pics from a moving car?

jeffgoldblum · 18/05/2023 11:00

Why was it deleted @polkadotdalmation ? , last I saw it was fairly normal for a RF post!

It seems ridiculous, I agree. Maybe they hope to get one of them picking their nose or something.

I think people started taking the mickey by outlining their near-catastrophic day. Someone just tried to start a thread like that again and MN deleted it after about 5 posts. Shame because it was funny.

jeffgoldblum · 18/05/2023 11:05

Ohh @Mackerson ! , cheers, lack of humour is very unwelcome on the RF board! 🤣
