The chat appears to have gone quiet today after the last thread filled up, so I'm making a new one for anyone who wants to come together whilst we all hold our breath hoping for a good outcome.

After last night's programme, I wondered if maybe her partner suspects someone local in particular, and police have told him the most he can say is he thinks someone local knows something. It would explain the police persisting with saying she is in the river as they are keeping an eye on this person, and don't want to spook them. Just a thought.

That said, the dog's harness being found halfway down the embankment does point to her being in the river so who knows! Either way, my heart breaks for the family and I hope she is found soon.

Yes, i think the same too. The police keep insisting that shes drowned was quite odd. And it could be that they actually suspect someone and want to make them think they are not suspected, by saying that there were no third party involved.

I think it provides a great incentive for us all
to get chipped so we can be easily tracked down if we go missing.

Err...Leaving aside the just slightly significant civil liberties issues with doing that have you looked at the read distance for things like RFID chips (unpowered and powered)?

Also battery life issues for a tiny powered chip.

JimHensonWasAGenius · 12/02/2023 14:11

@Peverellshire on thread 5 you posted

"Hopefully there will be an end to this very soon and I think imminently. By end of weekend max"

Do you still stand by that?

There have been lots of posts over the threads about water safety, about many of us regularly walking alone along rivers and canals, about how the likes of Strava share walks etc. to the world, and about the possible dangers of sharing our lives openly on social media. So these threads have always had an element of encouraging us to think even more about these things.

This
I've gone through all my apps and social media and took off any tracking.
I'm looking for an app or something that can be tracked by another phone so if I do go for a walk in the country, my husband can see where I am. I'm not sure of a good one though, or whether it's just easier to get an air tag.

melonraspberry · 12/02/2023 14:08

I’d never stop walking though. Fuck the evil bastards that prey on women.

Absolutely. I'll be doing whatever I can to feel safer when out alone in my rural area. I won't hide at home.

I've ordered an air tag for this purpose.

I posted this upthread and no one responded but I think this is important.

The woman who found Willow said she tied to her to a bench with string that was already attached to her collar - is this correct? If so, why did she have string attached to her collar? This to me indicates that she had been tied up previously and broke free. If this is the case, who tied her up?

ofwarren · 12/02/2023 14:18

I was naive when Sarah Everard happened. It didn't connect with me like this because it was at the other end of the country and was in the city.
With this case, Nicola could easily be me or one of the school mums I know. Even the clothes she was wearing are so typical of what the school mums wear here.
I've walked through those fields so many times and never felt unsafe. It feels like, if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere. I know objectively, that was always true but in a place like this, it just didn't seem possible.

Yet here you (still) are...

I’m becoming utterly fascinated by the steady roll call of posters who clearly think that they are the arbiters of what is acceptable or appropriate and can go on and on about it. Why do you think your opinion on what is up for discussion is paramount? Why are you so bossy essentially? And hectoring? Who on earth do you think you are to go round telling other people what to talk about? Are you this up yourself in real life?

It’s a massive news story. A woman has disappeared without trace and the experts involved in finding out what happened to her aren’t aligned. People will talk. Get over it. MN will moderate their site.

I think that was misreporting.
It was Tilly Ann, a friend, who said the dog was tied up with string. I think incorrect grammar and punctuation made it look like the string was already attached to the collar.

I think that's probably going to be the best bet. At least then, if your phone is gone you can still be found.

Goldpaw · 12/02/2023 14:23

melonraspberry · 12/02/2023 14:07

@Goldpaw yes it’s had that effect on me. I walk alone in much more secluded areas. But I’ve ordered an alarm and I’m thinking about getting an Apple Watch and allowing my dd’s phone to be able to track me. Not just out of fear, but for accidents etc.

Me too. I've always been really blasé about that kind of thing. I walk along the canal fairly often and tend to meet the occasional person.

I've not suddenly become scared of my own shadow, just feel it would be a good idea to make things easier for myself and others in the unlikely event that anything ever occurs.

it is healing*

Shewasnthere · 12/02/2023 14:24

@ItsaStupidSillyThing it's apparently a shadow not a bruise

There are photos of him from before she was missing with the same shadow on his face.
It's just discolouration

Yeah a shadow.... apparently. People can't see it.

It is a weird one which is why a big part of why people are interested and speculating. There seem to be a few possibilities but none of them are supported by good evidence which is why people are interested to see it solved. On the surface it seems tantalisingly possible to solve, the items and dog left behind, the small window of time when whatever happened happened, but there's nothing to conclude with yet. No one will want answers more than her family, and I'm sure most.posters bear this in mind but it's still obvious why most people a keen to know what exactly happened.

Shewasnthere · 12/02/2023 14:26

@Wittow do you see a bruise?
It's been mentioned he has the same shadow in other pictures

Wittow · 12/02/2023 14:26

I'm sure the police will have asked him about his facial bruising even if Dan walker didn't.

TrevTro · 12/02/2023 14:26

Exactly. I've ordered one for a friend too, she often runs alone - it's horrendous really that we have to think of these things but I think these threads are at least making us aware of possibilities, even if they are remote possibilities. I wouldn't want my family and friends going through what poor Nicola's are.

Oh stop it 🙄
Do you really think the police would not have noticed that?
