I'm watching Disappeared at the moment, and they just said that there are 600,000 missing people in the USA right now (filmed in 2021). Its so baffling and frightening.

I know it's highly controversial, but wish we had the option to chip people.

I think it's a lot easier to disappear and go off the grid in the US, due to the ability to set up legal entities to hide behind. I think tbh it's almost impossible to get off the grid in the UK without literally interacting with no one

Some people don't want to be found and if there has been no crime committed that is their right.

There are currently more than 11,000 actively long term missing people in the UK.

There was a very short window of time for a random attack and abduction, there were multiple people milling about the area and there has been no evidence of any kind of attack. No one has seen anything, there's no sign of a struggle.

In cases where a person disappears beside a body of water by far the most likely scenario is that they entered the water. Remember people who drown in rivers often do so intentionally.

Really?! I've never heard of a single person who intentionally drowned themselves, drowning is nearly always by accident. Think how hard it is to just stop yourself from breathing, your body does it instinctively

Yes most missing won't be missing by choice.

AlpacaBag · 09/02/2023 11:20

I wonder if she interacted with anyone at the school drop off, and if she seemed OK then? Leaving the car keys in the car is a bit of an usual thing to do too isn't it?

Where is the evidence she left the keys in the car? I've seen no mention of that.

Her route was visible on Strava

Actually, it isn't. Her Strava last updated in November, so either she stopped using it, or changed her privacy settings (but not retrospectively)

The walk that The Sun published must be an old one in the same general area

To be fair to the Sun, which I very rarely say, is - they do make it quite clear that the route is from November 7th.

Well you're one step ahead of the missing persons bureau there!

Most of them may well not be alive but to suggest that most of the 11,000 people long term missing have been abducted and no one knows is one hell of a stretch.

Yeah but they're probably all dead.

You can't live without a bank account or food, unless you're going to go and live in a tent in the woods and hunt to eat.

There’s a very short time window for anything and that includes drowning.

She’d have to struggle, drown and sink without a trace in 12 mins flat. And despite going in fully clothed there’s no slip marks or footprints in the mud, no torn grass where she tried to break her fall or hold onto the bank, no glove, no hair band, no boot, no keys, and most importantly the water was searched thoroughly that afternoon and there was no body either.

There’s not actually any evidence she ever went near the water’s edge - there’s no sign of her struggling with her dog there - the harness was near the bench and the dog was dry.

Don’t get me wrong - there’s drowning is by far the most likely scenario - but it is only a scenario without any evidence to support it.

I've been looking for a video that shows the gate and whether or not Willow could have followed her if she went out by the gate.
I've found this one. If you go to ten minutes in, you will see that Willow could easily go under the fence next to the gate.
This metal gate wasn't there when I lived in St Michael's, it was wooden, so I wasn't sure whether the new gate was actually able to keep Willow in the field or not.
Seems not

Most of them probably are. But not all, it's really not as difficult as some think to abscond and not be found if you don't want to be.

I didn't say that. People go "missing" because they died, because they chose to (escaping domestic abuse for example), because they got abducted (very rare), got taken by family members, got taken to another country by family members, become homeless (often to get out abuse at home).
I was just making the point that "going off the grid" is hard in the UK where its not in the US. In the US you can buy houses, cars with legal entities that make it very hard for you to be tracked down. Add inter state barriers into that and living off the grid ain't so hard in the US. Not like that here.

Peverellshire · 09/02/2023 11:27

@ofwarren I wonder if it was Nicola, sadly, that secured the dog to the bench originally, to stop him following her. It almost feels like we have a totally false narrative around the bench from the strange man that appears in the early reports and not elsewhere and numerous people telling others in a way that feels nonsensical. Have things got very muddled here?

Kennykenkencat · 09/02/2023 11:28

I haven’t really read too much about the ongoing investigation but why were the police so convinced initially that no one else was involved yet left it for days before they sent divers into the river

Why did they then change their minds and with that sent divers into the river

I might not have read in depth about what the police were/are doing but I am confused at the time they have taken to do certain things and the statements they have made

To be fair, divers were in the next day I think, maybe even earlier.

I know it's highly controversial, but wish we had the option to chip people.

I'm very bloody glad we don't.

dawngreen · 09/02/2023 11:30

Never saw or read any thing about a guy been seen. And the woman tied willow to the bench with string.

You're right, @confounded234 you might be able to do it for a short period of time in the UK but it's not sustainable with any kind of normal family life indefinitely. You can't easily do a 'canal man'.

Then you'd just find people maimed to get it out. Gruesome.

But she wasn't last seen by the water. She was last seen in a field.
