If I went walking solo in a area like that no way would I leave my phone unattended to go have a quick wee.

Quite. And especially not one that is frequented by so many dog walkers .

The phone was on the ground - in use - she apparently knew it was Nicolas due to the photo on the phone. She knows both owner and dog.
You would assume it’s normal to see a phone lying on the ground, a distressed dog running around alone, a harness on the ground and it wouldn’t activate a single alarm bell?

I'd assume the phone had fallen out of her pocket so I'd pop it on the bench, and that Willow had gone off on a jolly and Nicola was looking for her.

I'd have secured the dog if I could, and carried on, if I was limited on time. And of i knew someone that could get in touch with her husband, I'd contact them. The finder was entirely reasonable. Who would have assumed death or abduction somewhere familiar, safe, in the morning? You have to look at all the context.

It's very easy to criticise with hindsight!

I still believe the police that they have firm evidence that Nicola has drowned but they're not telling us all they know.

Sally090807 · 08/02/2023 19:07

Strange that the person that found the dog just happened to be carrying some string to tie the dog up, also odd that the cctv stopped working 2 days before Nicola went missing.

The string was already attached to the dog's collar as per the friend's Facebook post

As a previous poster has said, it’s the phone bit that doesn’t make sense to me. What reason is there to put it down somewhere if unless you are intending to go in the water.

Again I'm not saying this is what I think happened but she might have put it down then walked away if she wanted to vanish without a trace or someone wanted her to vanish without a trace.

It is not necessarily an indication that she went in the water at all.

placemats · 08/02/2023 19:18

And of course collect the phone! 😀

Walkinmeshoes · 08/02/2023 19:19

@dawngreen Why ? It’s a quiet village and a fairly secluded walk apart from dog walkers ? I really wouldn’t be bothered leaving my phone unattended for a few minutes.

Blessedwithsunshine · 08/02/2023 19:19

There wouldn’t be so much speculation if the police had opened a proper investigation in the first place!!

smileladiesplease · 08/02/2023 19:20

It's utterly appalling some of the posts are just unbelivable.

It's like some are gleeful as if this is midsomer murders or miss Marple.

I think some posters have taken leave of their senses and their empathy for not only the family but the friends and witnesses too.

Shame on mumsnet for allowing this online bullying and name calling of her family and friends. The police asked people not to do this.

Utterly shameful.

But you know the person on the phone, you know she wouldn’t just leave her phone on the ground and the dog running around alone.

Would you honestly still just leave both the dogs and phone and not alert anybody ?

If the phone was on the ground, I would think it had fallen out of her pocket, and maybe she had just left the dog in the field briefly whilst she popped back through the gate to see if it had fallen out over there. And that they would be back shortly. Then I’d put it out of my mind and carryon my business.
what surprises is me is that the dog walker or her DIL go and check the dog is still there unattended before phoning the school. Can you imagine the conversation? “Mrs Xs dog and phone were found in a field”. “When was this”. “Oh about an hour and half ago.” “Are they still there”. “I don’t know, no one’s gone to check”.
now that doesn’t add up. And why would the DP phone the police also before going to look. How does that go? “I’d like to report my partner missing”. “When was she last seen?” “About two hours ago when she left to walk the dog. She hasn’t come home yet and I’ve just been informed the dog was running loose over an hour ago”. “Is the dog still running loose or has your partner returned?” “I don’t know, no one’s gone to check yet”

that is where I can’t see things adding up. Police are so understaffed that I cannot see how they would’ve got an office out so quickly on that little information.

it’s a strange case that’s for sure

So the police are lining up to their lost into the sea final.

As widely predicted two days ago.....

Blessedwithsunshine · 08/02/2023 19:17

Quite. And especially not one that is frequented by so many dog walkers .

It's a bit odd if it's a place lots of people walk thier dogs that between 9.33am and 10.50am no one else seems to have seen anything, or come forward.

placemats · 08/02/2023 19:14

Yeah quite suspicious that people who haven't posted before start jumping on the bandwagon of ridiculous and silly.

Suspicious? Hmm Guess I'd better watch out I don't become the MN Murder Club's prime suspect.

I've been sitting on my hands up till now, but there are so many silly posts on these threads it's genuinely embarrassing.

There's a surprise!

MucozadeOnLucozade · 08/02/2023 19:22

Was she definitely wearing Fitbit on the day?
Also I would have thought they could get a signal back from her car keys?

smileladiesplease · 08/02/2023 19:23

It's happy valley syndrome these idiots actually think they understand a police investigation.
They know better snd have all the facts

Pathetic

Newnamenewme23 · 08/02/2023 19:24

Blessedwithsunshine · 08/02/2023 19:19

There wouldn’t be so much speculation if the police had opened a proper investigation in the first place!!

What do you mean?

the police were on it pretty quickly as far as reported- immediately treated like a missing person and investigations begun.

what make you so sure they didn’t open a “proper investigation”?

ofwarren · 08/02/2023 19:24

MucozadeOnLucozade · 08/02/2023 19:22

Police said she was wearing a fitbit when they gave a description.

I feel sorry for the people who feel its safe to walk early on a winters morning by them selves in a quiet place. According to that theory murderers, pedo types etc only visit cities.

I would rather be proved wrong then dead!

Nicola posted that her dog walk has been ‘spooky’ a few weeks ago, would she really leave her phone on the ground? Would anyone? You might leave on the bench but I don’t know anyone that would leave it on the ground in the wet.

musingsinmidlife · 08/02/2023 19:26

Where is the weir on the map that has been posted. Is it between the bench and the bridge?

I am not sure where the details that the phone was on the ground near the bench and the dog was distressed are coming from. If the phone was on the ground, that kind of goes against the theory that she fell in the river. No one would put their phone on the ground before going down to the edge of the river.

pigsinoodies · 08/02/2023 19:26

dawngreen · 08/02/2023 19:01

I think it said that her parents had had a caravan rented there, and I know their business address was there. I think she had rented a caravan too. I wonder if her dog had chased her sheep in the past? I got that feeling .

You don't know their business address was there though. Because it wasn't.

That should make you question the rest of what you think you know.

It’s become a matter of national interest now and it’s natural people will speculate as it’s such a weird case and not solved yet.

People shouldn’t say any defamatory things, that’s a sure fire way to see the thread shut down eventually but people are trying to make sense of it and have questions.

You can’t close down debate on something like this, if it doesn’t happen on here it will happen on some other site.

Her family and friends are unlikely to be reading this anyway, that’s the last thing you’d want to be doing when you’re sick with worry, you’d want to switch off and hope the police sort it.

Do we not think her partner might have been worrying already given that she hadn't come home after two hours? That's quite a long dog walk. Also, if she was already back by the gate at 9.20 (we are assuming) then surely the thinking is she had completed a bit of a circuit and was perhaps heading back towards her car. And given that she supposedly did this walk frequently then her partner would have had an idea of how long she normally took and would have been expecting her back. I assume given that she was on a work call she was supposed to be working that day, so why would she still be out on a dog walk nearly 2 hours later? So if he was at home worrying about her, possibly had even been trying to ring her, then I think the finding of her phone and the dog might be enough to prompt him to call the police before going to look for her etc.

The witness/finder confirmed she found both the phone and harness on the ground. The dog was running around alone.
The witness knows Nicola and recognised het face on the phone.
She put the phone on the bench, and tied the distressed loose dog up and left the scene. Alerted her DIL 45 mins later.

You’ve been all over these threads pushing your criminal theories like you’re desperate for it to be some mystery to keep you entertained. It’s embarrassing and offensive to watch.
