Clinton wins Democratic vote in New Hampshire.

Honestly I don't think I can take another 11 months of this sort of stress.

Back in December Nick Clegg casually mentioned that he didn't believe in God. It caused a little ripple, but not much. In the US that would be political suicide. As I understand it, you just don't even run for mayor of Shitkicker, Nebraska (that's copyright Bill Bryson), let alone senator or president, unless you express a deeee-vout belief in Gaaaaaaahd.

paulaplumpbottom · 09/01/2008 11:30

I love Bill Bryson but while I don't believe that the US would be ready for an Atheist President I don't think their religion is a huge issue for most people. There is definatly alot of people out their who want their religious views in the arena but I think most of us don't believe religion has a place in politics.

HairyIrene · 09/01/2008 11:31

this is interesting
cant hang around though

i muchos disagree hillary would be in if she was a man..she dont have that zing..
was no big fan of bill but he did have something even i could see that...

I will admit to knowing a postage stamp sized amount about American politics, but I can't help but wonder about Clinton v Obama - a potential first woman president v a potential first black president. How much of the politics surrounding this is based on feminist/racial issues as opposed to the policies of the individuals concerned? Is there a white male Democrat candidate???

ruty · 09/01/2008 11:42

maybe it is because the white males have let us down us badly...it is just a symbol of newness, change, rather than political correctness?

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 09/01/2008 11:44

The problem with your McCain/Huckabee ticket Paula is that if the Republicans win you are just one bullet away from having an American president who doesn't believe in evolution.

RosaLuxOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 09/01/2008 11:46

There are at least two white male democratic candidates. Race and gender may be issues in this campaign, but I don't think they are the issue.

Piffle · 09/01/2008 12:24

McCain

"Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran" ( as sung to Beach Boys Barbara Ann tune)

Huckabee is uninformed in foreign diplomacy and even knowledge. His quotes on Pakistan have been woeful and alarming
Infact I'd go so far as to say he makes GWB look well travelled when he got in...
He is a nutcase IMHO

There is surely no way a Republican is getting in this time...

ruty · 09/01/2008 12:26

yeah well that's what we thought about GB twice Piffle...

Piffle · 09/01/2008 12:27

high voter turnout signals major change

Obama has said he wasn't raised in a religious household and that his father was an atheist, but he himself has asserted his religious credentials and is an active member of a Baptist church.

Political Compass is also interesting for seeing where they stand. You can take the test yourself!

Thanks Rosa/Ruty! Glad to hear that I was wrong

UnquietDad · 09/01/2008 12:57

Re the above clip - I know it's comedy, but Mr Carlin seems to miss the point that people who dont vote "create the problem" just as much as those who vote for the "assholes" he decries...

"The Mole"? The C5 gameshow?

paulaplumpbottom · 09/01/2008 13:00

While I believe in evlution it wouldn't bother me to have a President who didn't. They are his religious beliefs and I respect that. Someones religious views are unimportant to me, where they stand on the issues is.

Love that link UQD - I am a pinko libertarian [proud]

donnie · 09/01/2008 13:09

I agree that Hillary should win the Democratic seat. She is sharp, smart and I like her. So what if she can turn it on when she has to? what politician doesn't do that FGS ? all politicians are schooled in thea art of persuasion , emotional manipulation and rhetoric and some are better than others. Get over it. the idea that she is only there ' because her husband did it first' is ludicrous - provide some evidence or justification if you are going to make such a wild accusation.

Go Hillary!!

paulaplumpbottom · 09/01/2008 13:09

Also to be fair to Huckabee all he said was that he believed that God created everything. He said that he did not know how he did it or how long it took. He never actually said that he didn't believe in evolution. Lots of Christians accept both

donnie · 09/01/2008 13:13

well Piffle, I disagree with you - I think the Republicans may well be re-elected on the basis that a lot of Americans would like to see an invasion of Iran. If that happens though , Iran will invade Israel and the economic fallout will be catastrophic, not to mention the ..er...collateral damage.

Not that this is what I would like to see, but I do see it as a real possibility. Sadly.

hmm I don't know a single American who wants to see an invasion of Iran. What a ridiculous suggestion.
