What were they thinking of???

There's perfect and there's criminally negligent. I think most MNers fall towards the perfect end of the spectrum (with some notable exceptions, early weaners all), with the odd lapse further towards the other end.

This was criminally negligent behaviour and resulted in the death of a little girl. I find it hard to believe anybody's able to argue for the parents, really. Obviously they are grieving, but fgs, they were wrong.

so not only are half of you judgmental you're also very good at acting like your stupid.....you know damn well what I'm saying....

inthegutter - I'm not saying you would allow a 7yr old to do that......but most people on here seem to think that they'd NEVER make an rash/dangerous/stupid decisions with regards to their children so they can sit and profess how perfect they are, and judge others to their hearts content.

Bocohohoho · 27/12/2007 21:25

This is a strange thread.

It's like someone saying 'it's wrong to let your children go crocodile hunting alone in the swamp with just a plastic spoon as a weapon because they might get eaten'

and then someone saying 'oh look at you so perfect bet you never make any mistakes judgey miss judger!'

TheIceQueen · 27/12/2007 21:27

littlelapin "pot and kettle" spring to mind - I'm not perfect, I've never tried to pretend I am - but at least I'm honest enough to fucking well admit it,

(Just leave the spoon behind, cheapslut)(whoever you are!)

OP posts:
cheapslutonjunk · 27/12/2007 21:28

QoQ, do you feel uncomfortable about allowing your DSs on quad bikes and you're projecting that onto posters on this thread?

pooka · 27/12/2007 21:29

There'sonly 3 there cod.
Boco is completely right. How on earth is it being prissy or holier-than-thou to say that the parents have made a monumental error in judgement. I'm pretty sure they're aware of that. And FWIW there is no way I would ever let dd on a quadbike on a public road at night or during daylight at age seven.

Bocohohoho · 27/12/2007 21:29

Cheapslut i tried it, it was actually fine, they caught two, go for it, i was being over cautious when i said that anyway.

WendyWeber · 27/12/2007 21:29

(I keep reading you as cheaps luton junk, which I know makes no sense at all but sort of fits with my image of Luton)

No plastic spoon? Would a metal one be better? Oh, how about a grapefruit one? They're a bit serrated.

cheapslutonjunk · 27/12/2007 21:30

People keep calling me Luton. It's making me laugh

I'm bastardised two lyrics for this name, because I thought it hilarious the BBC banned cheap lousy faggot but left in old slut on junk, btw.

WendyWeber · 27/12/2007 21:31

How about a cocktail stick?

OP posts:

Everytime I get up in the morning and my children get up, I make decisions. All of the time, every minute of the walk to school; how far should I let them run ahead, should I let them stroke a strange dog and all of the parenting crap that we ALL do everyday IceQueen.

Letting or consenting to something illegal is simply not something I would do. Yep, I am still judging. If this story is true as it's reported, those parents were wrong. Whether or not they face an inquiry/sentence for it isn't my decision, it's the police/judges consideration. But I can still record the fact that after reading this story as it is (maybe not all of the facts) that I think it's wrong.

cheapslutonjunk · 27/12/2007 21:31

They're lethal though Jan. Have yer eye out soon as...oh, yes, I see what you mean. Will arm the DC with cocktail sticks.

Bocohohoho · 27/12/2007 21:32

Oh cocktail stick if you're the over protective type. I mean the sooner you fling your children headlong into gratuitous danger the better for everyone.

Quattrocento · 27/12/2007 21:32

The one thing I learned from the She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named threads is that people have very different standards of what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable risks.

In other words - what seems completely normal behaviour to some is a heinous crime to others.

Maybe a bit of live and let live is in order?

myrrhthamoo · 27/12/2007 21:33

I'm with Wendy et al. There's unavoidable risk - we all take those every day, and we take them on behalf of our children. Then there's avoidable risk and, afaic, giving your 7 year old a powerful piece of machinery, then allowing her to ride it, in the dark, illegally, on an unlit road is an avoidable risk.

And no (cod) we don't know all the details and mitigating circumstances and we are just speculating but, hell, if I only offered my opinions on things I was an absolute expert on - well, I'd post rather infrequently.

And ds1 has been on a quad bike - he went to a quad biking party (I posted on here about it - I was really worried). But he was 9, it was supervised, it was in the daytime, the quad bikes had limiters on them so they couldn't go over 5-10 mph, and dh went with him with instructions to pull him out if he felt even vaguely unhappy with any aspect of it. I was still glad when he was home safe and sound though.

Just look all over the talk section of this site - it's full of fucking judging threads, "What were they thinking" (who the fuck knows - no-one except the parents do yet), "I saw the most awful parenting today" (usually about something fairly inoculous - but obviously falling way below the "standards" expected by the majority of MNers), BF/FF, weaning/early weaning/, smacking, parenting styles, benefits claimants, immigrants - you name it there's 100's of threads a week where the SOLE purpose of the OP is to encourage people to judge the situation.

No-one on here is so stupid that they don't realise that you can discuss something without judging - and I'm sorry - but the OP set the tone "What were they thinking of".......as opposed to a "that poor child" (or similar).
