Oh God, Fran, not at all surprised you're down. I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through.

My thoughts are with you and Molly.

I really hope that all our campaigning helps.

Dottydot · 07/11/2007 21:31

Fran - thinking of you. I'm still hoping that common sense and justice will prevail...

ibroughtcake · 07/11/2007 21:32

I have been avoiding this thread, but having just read the whole thing I really don't know what to say

I feel so desperately sad for you Fran and so so so hope this has a good ending

Beenleigh · 07/11/2007 21:35

You poor thing. It's just so completely ridiculously awful!
What's your edd Fran?

bossybritches · 07/11/2007 21:50

ruty nor do I as a rule but if it attracts publicity in itself then that may do something?

At least we can all feel we have TRIED!!

I repeat a quote I was told as a child.

"All that is required for evil to flourish is that good men do nothing"

FranLyon · 07/11/2007 22:04

I'm due on the 3rd of Jan Beenleigh.

tcmummy · 07/11/2007 22:09

Fran, I'm so sorry that you are having to go though such a terrible thing like this. Just wanted to say you are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep hoping and keep trying. Molly is yours and no matter what happens over the next few months no-one will ever take that fact away from you. xxxx

WideWebWitch · 07/11/2007 22:12

Fran, what do you mean 'the birth plan'? Don't post if you don't want to/aren't able to but god, that sounds so bloody awful.

Thinking of you. and as Edam says, this isn't the first time many of us here have been concerned about this.

Beenleigh · 07/11/2007 22:17

OK then guys, what else can we do? A protest? Parliament square is a good place, you need police consent though, but it's not hard to get. I don;t fancy it though unless others do.

FranLyon · 07/11/2007 22:54

The birth plan says what will happen when I go into labour. Although I understand that they have to do what they believe will keep Molly safe it is pretty heartbreaking.

Fran

Beenleigh · 07/11/2007 22:58

oh god, it is so hideous!! I can only imagine what they are planning. It is medieval.

edam · 08/11/2007 10:16

I'm so sorry Fran, can't imagine how painful it is.

Beenleigh's right, this whole MSbP thing is a witch-hunt a la Salem and The Crucible - any logic or sensible assessment of the evidence seems to fly out of the window. Mass hysteria among the professionals.

morocco · 08/11/2007 10:25

have signed petition, what else can i do? are we writing to ou mps or is there a motion to sign?

edam · 08/11/2007 10:25

Signed the petition - where does it go? How does it reach those in authority?

edam · 08/11/2007 10:26

Morocco, John Hemmings MP has to put down a new Early Day Motion because the Parliamentary session ended. New one has now begun - he promised to let us know when he could get an EDM up. But it is still worth contacting your MP.

FranLyon · 08/11/2007 10:28

Thank you.

It's breaking me in two today. I'm not saying I'm perfect, I never have. I'm not saying there is no reason for social services to be involved, or to be worried. I just don't believe that there is anything to warrant such an extreme intervention. The current plan just seems to hurt everyone, including Molly, and I can't find a reason I can understand for it.

I know that they are just trying to keep Molly safe, and I understand (and agree) that that has to come above how I might feel. It's just so hard to understand and come to terms with.

Thanks,

Fran

Why is the media not jumping on this? If this case managed to stay in the headlines for a few days, they would at least be forced to justify their decision.

Fran, you have been so strong. We are all wishing you well and willing to do anything we can to help.

Beenleigh · 08/11/2007 11:06

I started another thread earlier about emailing the today programme, but maybe it should all stay on this thread??

Thread here

Think we should also mail womans hour, bbc news, newsnight, guardian and independent.
Also your local mp, plus John Hemming mp. DD wanting to type too, so distrACTED
SORRY

Beenleigh · 08/11/2007 11:13

aCTUALLY, JUST THOUGHT why don't we try to email as many places as possible, and the first person to email a new place could post a link on here as well as what they've written to make it really easy for the rest of us to do the same. i don't mean that we should all write the same, but lets face it, the emails are essentially going to mean the same, so it doesn;t really matter, basically, the more the better.

Here's mine:

Today programme: www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/contact/

I wrote the following:
Social services have decided to take Fran Lyons baby away as soon as she is born.
When Fran was sixteen years old, (she is now 22) she was the victim of a serious sexual assault, and as a result, she suffered from mental health issues. She received therapy for two years, one year as an inpatient, and less than one following her discharge. She has not received or needed any mental health therapy since that time, and the psychiatrist that treated her has explicitly stated that she has no concerns whatsoever for Fran's mental health.

Unfortunately, early on in Fran?s pregnancy, there was a difficult situation with her (then) partner, and Fran called the police. Due to the nature of the problem and combined with the fact that Fran was pregnant, the police referred the case to social services. Fran was completely honest and open about her past mental health issues, and clear that she no longer suffered from any such problems. However, a paediatrician, from the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, who has never actually met or spoken to Fran, has inexplicably suggested that she may in due course suffer from Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy. This has resulted in Hexham Children's services deciding that upon her birth, Fran?s baby daughter, Molly, will be taken away from her. The final decision is technically made by the Child Protection Conference, based on recommendations from the Social services, and the 'independent chair'.

It is abundantly clear that Fran Lyon will be absolutely no danger to her baby, but at the very least, Fran should be allowed to stay in an assessment unit with her baby, Molly, pending the (inevitable) decision that she is more than capable of caring for her daughter independently.

She was recently interviewed on This Morning: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2qHcH_Eaocg and there has been some coverage in the press too.

A petition has been set up here. www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/539543596

It would be fantastic if the Today programme could cover this story, and hopefully get some feedback from the responsible social services department.

edam · 08/11/2007 12:49

Fran, I obviously don't know what your solicitor has suggested, but has s/he considered making the case that Molly has a human right to at least be breastfed? I'd say all babies have a human right to be with their mummies, tbh, except obviously in cases where there is real danger - not just speculation based on nothing at all.

FWIW my sister had a tiny insight into the attitudes of health professionals to new mothers with mental health issues when she had my niece. The appalling midwives on the post-natal ward reacted with horror when they finally bothered to read her notes and saw she was taking an antidepressant. They treated it as if she'd been covering up. Never mind that she had been entirely open about taking the medicine throughout her pregnancy (she had made sure it WAS in her notes, FGS) and had checked out very thoroughly whether it was OK for a pregnant or breastfeeding mother. Strange attitude as she was a student nurse at the time so was clearly capable of checking out drug information - more than they did.

Beenleigh · 08/11/2007 13:25

Edam, I wish I'd included this in the petition now, someone did suggest it, but for some reason, I was having a dim moment

ruty · 08/11/2007 13:33

the message this gives out to all women who have ever had a brush with mental health issues [and lets face it lots of us have had experiences of eating disorders/depression etc, especially during adolescence] is to keep quiet about it at all costs, never approach a doctor about it, because at some point it may be held against you, however many years after recovering, in the worst possible way.

The bloody SS and these paediatricians involved should be made to sit through a performance of The Crucible. They've probably never heard of it.

Ruty, I've been saying the same thing. If they have heard of the Salem witch trials, they must be too daft to notice the parallels
