What is so dreadful about France that somebody would put unaccompanied children in a dingy and send them to England? I just can't begin to imagine what is going on. Is it a brutal regime in other European countries?

I should add that this isn't some racist rant. I understand that England and English is a draw for many, they may have relatives here and so on.

Real victims not allowed to voice oppinons and concerns about cultural differences based on real life experience are shut down and called racists and xenaphobic - where have we seen that before?

DGRossetti · 20/08/2020 12:25

@megletthesecond

English is so widely spoken I don't blame them for coming here. In China and India I always had people practicing their English speaking to me.
Which makes it equally difficult for you to practice their language, to be fair.
Itisbetter · 20/08/2020 12:47

Being “called” racist and xenophobic implies you aren’t. If you’re basing your opinions on someone’s race and country of origin then what else would you call it?Confused. The fact the data the poster had was based on people from an entirely different part of the world (ie Asian not from the Middle East/North Africa) was depressingly obtuse.

Itisbetter · 20/08/2020 12:50

And everyone is welcome to voice their opinion on MN though obviously if other people find it ill informed, ignorant or offensive they are also free to voice their take on things.

randomer · 20/08/2020 14:42

Tommy is now seeking asylum in Spain I believe. He has yet to acquire a working knowledge of the language though.

I'm sure he'll pick it up

CHIPS WITH THAT !!!

MangoFeverDream · 20/08/2020 18:20

Oh God the “straw man”

Well, that takes the biscuit 🙄

While we’re reshuffling the population shall we retrieve these guys?

Maybe you should if the host countries don’t want them.

Your old age provisions are rather shit, so maybe something for the U.K. to work on, no?

People have very strong views on these topics but it is good if we can all talk to each other. Clearly it is provably wrong that all cultures are the same or equal. Some are incredibly sexist as are some religions (including fundamentalist Christianity in some of its forms)

Total agreement. It’s sad that the only rejoinder from some posters is to make accusations of racism/xenophobia/Islamophobia. Do they have any other arguments?

Ylvamoon · 20/08/2020 19:03

I think they are a bit delusional... they want to help everyone regardless. While in reality we can't.
We just don't have the resources. Nobody has.

Itisbetter · 20/08/2020 20:08

It’s not an accusation to say someone who is making statements based on race/country of origin/religion IS racist/xenophobic/(in this instance)anti-Islam its what the words mean.
I’m not sure what “arguments” you are looking for? Of course the country can and should support people seeking asylum. The fact they are brown, Muslim, male and alone shouldn’t impact that. Of course I don’t think all Middle Eastern men are sexual predators. Of course I don’t think all Muslims are disrespectful to women, any more than I think all Christians are. This is absolutely NOT my experience.

randomer · 20/08/2020 20:30

Personally, I don't want to help everyone. I would like people to be treated fairly and with dignity.

This twaddle about groping and Muslims isn't really helping.

@Xenia I would rather we worked back to having 16m fewer whether they all share my culture or not.

Well, you didnt think that when you had your large family did you? Grin

noseresearch · 21/08/2020 01:08

I’m saying that culturally, they do have less respect for women.

^Agree with this, and this is coming from someone with family from the ME

Xenia · 21/08/2020 08:19

Interesting point above - suggesting if people point out something that differs between race or religions that is racist. It will depend how you define it but if you state who is most affected by sickle cell an. or some medical differences or that the Koran requires more female witnesses than male ones i.e. state facts - is that going to be racist because it is a differs between the races or the religions etc?

CherryPavlova · 21/08/2020 08:30

Huge amount of racism, I’ll information and total lack of compassion from many. The comments in the DM were reprehensible and the DM shave taken them down as incitement to racial hatred.

A child died, washed up on a beach. Can anyone begin to imagine? People get on their high horses about a child being told off by granny, or having a burger, then talk about another child dying in horrendous circumstances as someone being acceptable. It’s like 1933. The reason our children are not swilling about in the ocean is merely an accident of birth. Pure luck. We are no more entitled to our children surviving then the parents of that teenage, or little Alain.

He was not a ‘migrants’. He was an unaccompanied child asylum seeker. Sudan does not issue visas to under eighteens. You cannot leave Sudan without a visa. It is not illegal to enter the UK as an asylum seeker.

The crime is a world that fails to protect children. A nation that does not uphold Dubs. A press that uses emotive language to generate hate and dehumanise.

Nobody is poorer because of a few desperate souls arriving for a better life.

woodhill · 21/08/2020 08:43

It is horrendous that he drowned.

The issue is though it isn't just a few, it is 1000s and it is never ending.

And there are too many unskilled economic migrants arriving.

Itisbetter · 21/08/2020 09:14

And there are too many unskilled economic migrants arriving.
Are there? The children are obviously yet to be work ready, but my impression was these migrants weren’t unskilled. Where did you read this?

randomer · 21/08/2020 09:20

Racism is the belief that people of some races are inferior to others, and the behaviour which is the result of this belief

Collins Dictionary.

If the dingies were full of middle class people from Scandanavia, I assume the rhetoric would be different.

CherryPavlova · 21/08/2020 09:23

1000s? Where are your numbers from?

1, 892 in 2019. That is not ‘thousands, is it?

We’ve allowed 3million the right to arrive from Honk Kong. I’m not saying that’s wrong but the numbers aren’t comparable.

We’re blessed that ‘unskilled migrants’ are arriving. Our farms would have rotting produce otherwise. The jobs advertised to the English unemployed weren’t exactly popular.

Children aren’t unskilled migrants.

What gives you a right to a safe and better life?

Dublin Regulation not applicable to UK after Transition ends. It is for EU member states after all. I do hope there are alterations to it. Mediterranean countries not assisted by 'I'm alright Jack' northern ones.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2020 09:43

suggesting if people point out something that differs between race or religions that is racist.

It's not the acknowledement of differences that is racist, but the groundless basis of assumptions on those differences that is. A lot of people "appear" to get the two confused. Which becomes a good way to shut down debate.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2020 09:52

Racism is the belief that people of some races are inferior to others, and the behaviour which is the result of this belief

We need the scientific definition of race here ....

silentpool · 21/08/2020 10:15

I believe most of them are economic refugees, not asylum seekers. They come in that way because they can't come in legally to the UK as an unskilled worker. It is a shameful abuse of the asylum system, which is why I would prefer to UK to fill the quota with UN refugees. It turns the public against the genuine refugees who can't afford to pay their way to the front of the queue.

And yes, it does come down to ID cards. If you live in one of the more multicultural areas of London, you will often find yourself wondering, just how many people are legally resident. It is very easy to just stay.

Itisbetter · 21/08/2020 10:35

I believe most of them are economic refugees, not asylum seekers. why? Have you missed the bombing and slaughter? Did the whole thing pass you by? Do you think the countries mentioned are safe happy places to live?Shock

silentpool · 21/08/2020 10:51

It's the bit about crossing multiple safe countries that bothers me. We can't take in their whole country so are you suggesting, we prioritise the ones that get themselves to the UK? A choice does have to be made as we can't take everyone.

Maybe think of it as The Hunger Games ? The strongest get furthest while the weakest and least desirable fall at the first border ?

There's probably a reality TV franchise in it, now I start to think.
