Shamima begum allowed to return to UK

Surely I’ve got this wrong? She’s actually allowed back to the UK after joining a terrorist group abroad?

Anyone just a tiny bit worried about what might happen if she does return?

I agree with the above, however she is no longer a child. This is not a question of bringing her back from the airport on the way to Syria. She is 20 years old. She has never condemned the regime she went to join. She is a grown woman .

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 20/07/2020 09:23

Surely what she has done or not done has no baring on anything. The only place she is accountable for her actions is a court of law. ? Unless we are now using the press and social media to decide someone's guilt ?

Sadly according to some on here.. THAT is exactly what they want. According to them , actions taken by a radicalised CHILD prohibit access to normal justice. That's not a Britain I recognise or want any part in.

Me neither. It concerns me how quickly some members of society are quick to abandon the rule of law in favour of populism and trial by media.

She isn't in a place to. Many of the refugee camps are still very much strong holds for ISIS with their wives and children. There' was a really interesting documentary where some women would only speak with anonymity.

She may want to denounce them, she may not. There's some interesting ideas surrounding grooming and the lasting impact it has, including that the victim can often still feel like they were the instigator or it was their choice.
She is still our problem to deal with.

BlackPetunia · 20/07/2020 10:02

So how is she going to get back to Britain?

She doesn’t even have a passport..

Good point! I don’t understand why she even needs to come back anyway. Why can’t they just do the trial virtually over Zoom or something so she can stay where she is

You OP.

You OP.
Well I’m sure they can sort something out. They should be doing everything possible to prevent her from stepping foot back into this country

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/07/2020 10:43

No, they shouldn't. She should be brought home to England, for all the reasons given on this thread and the government should be taught a lesson about ignoring its responsibility to its citizens and the rest of the world.

I understand that but people including myself are uneasy about her coming back considering she’s been with isis for the past 5 years and has probably seen a lot of stuff. Who’s to say she won’t take her knowledge and put it into practice here in the U.K. ?

No one can assure you of that OP, just as no one can assure you that SB will become a doctor and save lives, or a helpful bus driver, lived by the people on her route. But not being able to tell the future is no excuse for our government to behave illegally.

I certainly wouldn’t want her to be treating me if she was a doctor! She will have a criminal record so I don’t think she will ever get a job, again, that’s another thing because she’ll have to live off benefits which we will have to fund

Having a criminal record does not stop you from getting a job.

So your life was completely different to Shamima Begum's?

I've taught in places were young women are very much 'girls' and are not even allowed on public transport. Even with a couple of teachers in the middle of the day to visit a university.

These young women can't go to the corner shop without their mother.

Socially they behave like 9 year olds.

I have no idea if Shamima Begum had that upbringing but I doubt she was allowed a Saturday job.

I can totally understand a sheltered girl being easily groomed. Being told she will have freedom because everyone is Muslim and will respect her. That she will get free board and lodging and be creating a caliphate. It would seem like a wonderful adventure where she would be an adult.

For me it comes down to this.

Is she dangerous?

If she is then the UK is in a much better position to monitor her rather than leave her in Syria or move her to Bangladesh.

If she isn't dangerous then there is no reason she should not return to the UK.

It would if you’re convicted of being a member of a terrorist group

Having a criminal record for terrorist offences does not stop people being able to work OP.

Sounds like you wouldn’t care if a IS member was roaming the streets and before you say it, yes I know there’s others - and they should all be kept inside as well!

You can't have it both ways. On one hand demanding they're all kept(being in prison is from public money as well) and on the other moaning that taxpayers will be supporting her.

While she might be banned from certain jobs, doesn't mean she can't have a job at all.

lakesidesummer · 20/07/2020 12:44
  • So how is she going to get back to Britain?

She doesn’t even have a passport..*

These sorts of issues are one reason why embassies and consulates were created.
As a reasonably successful international power it won't be beyond the capacity of the UK to sort this out.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 20/07/2020 12:59

She could get a temporary travel document, which get issued at a cost, which can be paid by her parents. There are ways.

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/07/2020 12:59

Just checked and found out that if SB spends less than a year in prison, she would be eligible to stand as an MP.
