What do you think of this ?
I think it's a great idea if it stops a perv's vile behaviour.

The article doesn't mention what if any side-effects that chemical treatment has. Generally though, I support it.

Haven't read the article, but while it might remove the sexual aspect of their behaviour, castration won't change the underlying nastiness that caused them to be sexually abusive. So no doubt they'd find another channel to express themselves, and still be perverted, pathological - and dangerous.

Eventually, yes.

Whoooosh · 13/06/2007 09:04

Personally feel they should do it with a blunt rusty knife and no anaesthetic....

lyrabelacqua · 13/06/2007 09:11

Some paedophiles say they want to stop offending but they're driven by a compulsion to do it (and lack of willpower to resist their vile urges) so this could be a good way of stopping them. others are going to do it regardless

OP posts:
BishyBarneyBee · 13/06/2007 09:22

I think it is a sensible solution.

A lot of paedophile behaviour stems from their own history of child sexual abuse. Surpressing their sexual urges and helping them come to terms with their own abuse could be an acceptable route for a lot of people.

LaBoheme · 13/06/2007 09:22

It isn't really a magic answer, they are then violent to their victims in other ways.

colditz · 13/06/2007 09:24

Not a magic answer, but what is?

It's better than saying "Well, we could chemically castrate them, but it might not work, so why bother?"

CAn we let the parents of abused victims do it?????

colditz · 13/06/2007 09:32

I dislike the term paedos because it seems hysterical, as if they are such a common occurance they need a shortened name.

rattleskuttle · 13/06/2007 09:33

i'm really pleased they're going to try this.

i was writing about this on another thread just a week or so ago - i should go and work for the government, lol.

i know there are paedophiles who would like to be able to take something to help stop their behaviour. i don't think they're all terribly predatory but tbh i don't like to think about it much at all

I think ANY alternative to locking up convicted paedos for life in max security prisons with no access to the net EVER is doomed to failure.

harleyd · 13/06/2007 09:35

they should be fricken lobotomised

Soph73 · 13/06/2007 09:45

I agree with whoosh and (like someone else said) how on earth do you make sure that they keep taking their medication? As far as the human rights aspect goes .... they don´t deserve any in my opinion.

lyrabelacqua · 13/06/2007 09:45

They should be forced to go to the doc for top-up injections, then if they fail to show up, they get slung in jail.
I also don't like the term paedo, i took the thread title from the Mirror's headline. Sorry.

I thought that it still did not take away the desires and that they could still damage children by foreign objects?

Or have I been watching too much American TV?

MamaMaiasaura · 13/06/2007 09:55

In mental health they have depot clinics where patients come for thier injections. IF a patient doesnt attend for injection they are contacted or care co-ordinator is as the medication helps keep them well. If this goes ahead I envisage they will use a similar set-up.

If the person becomes non-compliant it may be that they become a risk to themselves or others and can be detained under the mental health act and have treatment without consent.

harleyd · 13/06/2007 09:56

why waste the money on them when a quick bullet to the head would do a much better job

Whoooosh · 13/06/2007 10:00

Wouldn't cost me anything to get my rsty old garden shears out-would gladly offer my services.....they deserve to suffer rather than a bullet imho.
