It appears the children and teacher have been found alive.
Has a miracle happened ?
I am so delighted and hope they will be ok after their horrific ordeal.
It's always nice to see good news as lately all the headlines are of something bad having happened.
Please forgive me if there is already a thread on this topic.

Another person crying with this news.
Even my apathetic 13 dgod daughter is on tears.
A wonderful demonstration of global co operation and people just wanting to help others in distress irrespective of politics, religion, creed... Best news for a long time.

chequeplease · 10/07/2018 14:58

Amazing!! SUCH relief.
I hope there is a future update showing the boys with their families. Although I'd understand if they wanted to stay away from the media.
I'm just thrilled!! Grin

I still can hardly believe it.
What extraordinary bravery from the rescuers and boys. My heart goes out to the family of the diver who lost his life.

Both the BBC and Sky News have confirmed that everyone has safely exited the caves now. Thank God and RIP Major Saman Gunan.

It seemed impossible at times.

I think people are being a bit unfair about Elon Musk. Only a few days ago no-one was sure if the boys would be able to make the dive and in that time he has designed and built a mini submarine. I know it wasn't needed, but its still quite a good thing to do. I can see the design being useful in other diving rescues in future.

Pupsiecola · 10/07/2018 22:11

I agree Hill actually. He'd have been criticised had he not tried to help..I don't think he should have posted videos of they weren't already in the public domain, but I think he's done the best he could; he flew himself there and he allocated top people and resources to the project at very short notice.

TwitterQueen1 · 10/07/2018 22:25

Yes. All he was doing was trying to help. He put unlimited resources available. Kudos to him.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 11/07/2018 02:04

I agree he seems to be getting an unnecessarily harsh time. I’m sure his submarine will be brilliant in different circumstances.

WeirdScenesInsideTheGoldmine · 11/07/2018 07:46

It’s ridiculous they way he’s been treated, he was a total superstar.

speakout · 11/07/2018 07:51

I think he was in danger of throwing a spanner in the works.

Diverting or delaying operations.

It was clear to the general public through the media that some of the squeeze points were only 40 cm wide. Far too tight for his submarine.
Yet he chose to bluster in- sorry but I am cynical of his motives.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 11/07/2018 07:59

Elon Musk was bullied and lonely as a child. For all his wealth and success, he seems to have a brittle ego, perhaps on account of his early experiences of not fitting in.

I can just imagine that the team of rescuers at the cave in Thailand would seem like the ultimate ‘boy tribe’ you’d dream of being part of. Maybe Elon was seeking to be accepted into the gang by offering up his ideas and inventions?

Taking my amateur psychologist’s hat off, I think he and his co-workers made remarkable progress in a short period of time. Hard to judge but it does look as if his submarine might have been in danger of getting stuck at the tricky ‘choke point’ in the cave. But I’d like to see him develop it further. Could a more flexible version be built? What about turning it into a ‘smart submarine’ capable of doing reconnaissance work and delivering supplies?

WinnieTheW0rm · 11/07/2018 08:15

If a tech solution had been the best way ahead, having Musk on your side and fully committed wouid be one of the most valuable offers possible.

And he still did it, even when it was clear it was only ever going to be a fallback. The challenges of remote and hard to reach places got the attention of some of the best tech innovators. We're unlikely to see the sustained level of resources over decades that go into space programmes, but just for a while the attention switched to what we still cannot do in this planet. And that might be a good thing in itself.

AuntieStella · 11/07/2018 08:36

This made my tears well up

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/07/11/thai-cave-rescue-hero-australian-doctor-emerges-flooded-tunnels/

The rescuers are amazing.

I hope the British divers who found the boys and masterminded the rescue are considered for the George Medal.

Urbanbeetler · 11/07/2018 08:48

I do hope the Australian doctor’s dad was able to know what his wonderful son was doing before he (the dad) passed away.
