New thread to discuss the developments from the news for Madeleine Mccann

I know the other thread got a bit out of hand but lets keep this one nice if possible.

I think it is good to discuss all that is happening in the news & also good to see peoples views on what is happening in the news.

The lastest i can see so far is that Madeleins parents want to keep focused on the finding of there daughter & want to keep this in the news they don't want things to turn on the police investigation & how it is being handled.

Mr & Mrs Mccann have also decided they want an E poster which they are going to be sending out through email to spread the news so that everyone, everywhere can look out for beautiful Madeleine.

OP posts:

portuguese law.

ess · 11/05/2007 11:04

Just heard on news they're going to be changing the law there as its so antiquated. Shame it cant be done now. Wonder they're getting anything done there.

BigPantsRule · 11/05/2007 11:29

Kookaburra - my thoughts entirely. Something doesn't ring true about all this. Yet if the police were actually allowed to broadcast this footage, then maybe whoever it was would come forward to eliminate themselves from the enquiry. Plain common sense, really.

I was this morning at a response by the detective who appears to be in charge (the one issuing the updates). Kate Garroway of GMTV stopped him as he was passing and asked why the police had only just released an official description of Madeleine's clothing. He replied that it was because people kept handing in clothing they had found that was completely unrelated, clearly missing the point of her question and ignoring (intentionally or otherwise) the implied criticism.

Dropside · 11/05/2007 11:31

Hmmm, Kate Garroway is the absolute epitome of class reporting.

I don't think he actually understood what she was yelling at him.

BigPantsRule · 11/05/2007 11:35

Possibly not, Dropside. But someone has to ask the question! And if the answer she was looking for is - as for everything else - Portuguese law, then it's just as well they are seeing sense and changing it. I just wonder how many other less high-profile investigations have been conducted in this way in the past.

LaCerbiatta · 11/05/2007 12:26

I'm getting a bit fed up with all this criticism at the investigation. It really annoys me hearing the outrage of reporters like Kate Garroway and Jane Hill who only seem to be upset at the fact that they don't have information to feed their curiosity and that of the british public. Lack of information from the police to the media DOES NOT equal bad investigation. Give them some credit please. They are doing an investigation of totally unknown proportions, putting more men, more time and more effort than they have ever previously done with any portuguese child. Portuguese people are actually getting quite resentful about this and all you lot criticism doesn't help. For your information the portuguese investigative police has a brilliant record of success, internationally acknowledged, and doesn't need some arrogant and full of themselves 'journalists' telling them how to do their work. Of course, they could be even better if they allowed Bigpantsrule to pu some 'plain common sense' into their work

It's true that they've done many mistakes, they should have closed the borders straight away, secured the crime scene and probably many other things, but hey this type of crime is virtually unknown in Portugal. The Algarve is a very uneventful place crime wise and they just were not prepared and it took a long time (too long) for them to get going, but no one, not you not the journalists, can criticise the work they're doing now. Maybe later in retrospect when all the details are known, but not now.

Deep breath.... feel better now!

foxcub · 11/05/2007 12:27

It astounds me that as they now have three suspects (positive ID by a witness who caught one of them photographing his daughter and another positive ID of the woman suspect who was seen acting suspiciously outside madeleine's window) why can't they release the CCTV footage of those suspects - so that people can report if they spot them anywhere???

Dropside · 11/05/2007 12:28

Agree tugamommy.

The news reporters are giving Britain a bad name, the Portuguese police have nothing to be ashamed of.

foxcub · 11/05/2007 12:30

I'm not criticising the police as such - I just don't understand the Portugese legal restrictions omn releasing info which may enable the public to help the police - like a "wanted" type poster of the three suspects?

LaCerbiatta · 11/05/2007 12:31

Ok, some news now. Apparentely they found a trace of MAdeleine in another apartment next to the one she was taken from and they're looking into the possibility that staff was involved.
Also, 3 suspects are being questioned by the police. Maybe the ones on the footage?
One paper says that the police kept the parents in for so long yesterday because their story doesn't match that of the staff regarding their checking on the children every half an hour... I'm sure it's all rubish... Maybe some members of staff want to draw attention somewhere else?

Dropside · 11/05/2007 12:32

Because the public are well-meaning but they are actually not that much help?

jenk1 · 11/05/2007 12:32

says on sky website that David Beckham is set to record a message appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Dropside · 11/05/2007 12:33

oh fgs

LaCerbiatta · 11/05/2007 12:35

Sorry didn't out that very clearly. Members of staff said to the newspaper that the parents didn't check on the children at all. And also thought it was strange that they firmly refused the babysitting facilities in the evening even though they used them all the timeduring the day.

Again, I think this is all rubbish!

LaCerbiatta · 11/05/2007 12:36

'out'?????? I think I meant put....

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 11/05/2007 12:40

There could be any number of reasons why pictures of the suspects haven?t been released to the general public. Maybe they?re known to the police, maybe they?re connected with other similar crimes and releasing their details could jeopardize another, ongoing investigation. I do think people have been too harsh on the police, considering we don?t actually know what they?ve been doing other than what we?ve heard reported in the media. And I actually think that in this country reporting goes too far the other way, eg releasing details of people who are arrested before they have even been charged with a crime, thus potentially ruining their lives for ever even if they?re not guilty.

When those prostitutes were murdered in Ipswich the name and address of a suspect was released after his arrest, but he was later released without charge. So he didn?t commit a crime, but you can bet that people will remember who he is and what he was associated with.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 11/05/2007 12:44

if three suspects, the ones on the footage perhaps, are being questioned that doesn't bode well does it? because if they are the abductors that means they don't have madeleine any more so she will have been passed on to wherever she was intended - and could be anywhere by now.

UnquietDad · 11/05/2007 12:50

I'm just glad the "children go missing every day and this case is only getting attention because the family is white, middle class and photogenic, blah-de-blah" brigade haven't come out of the woodwork yet. Because they'd get a good kicking if they did.

totaleclipse · 11/05/2007 12:54

It says on Sky News that the ground search has been called off, but no explanation why, anyone know? I so hope that its a good thing.

fireflyfairy2 · 11/05/2007 12:54

So is your post just a provocation then unquiet dad, so you can justify the urge you have to give people "a good kicking"

FWIW I am part of neither brigade.

UnquietDad · 11/05/2007 12:56

Just a verbal one. It was only an observation.
Back to the thread - it seems like something positive.

LaCerbiatta · 11/05/2007 12:59

The ground search has been called off I guess because they know or think she's been taken away seomewhere far. If they haven't found anything there yet they probably won't. It's a waste of man power

totaleclipse · 11/05/2007 13:03

I do hope its positive, because only last night portugise Police conference they were saying how search areas have been divided, so something must have come to light for plans to change so suddenly.

Astrophe · 11/05/2007 13:03

just want to encourage you all to go to the thread called "Download the E poster of Madeleine McCann..." and to keep it bumped. Its in the 'In th news' topic.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 11/05/2007 13:11

ground search has been called off because they haven't found anything. there's nowhere left to search.
