Another grooming gang - Telford - up to 1000 girls as young as 11- going on for 40 years

gluteustothemaximus · 11/03/2018 16:34

Cannot believe what I am reading. Again.

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/britains-worst-ever-child-grooming-12165527

Been going on for so long. And authorities did NOTHING.

'Council staff viewed abused and trafficked children as “prostitutes” instead of victims, according to previously unseen files'

Some have been murdered, to send a message to the other girls not to talk.

SadAngry doesn't even begin to cover it.

When will we take girls and women seriously?

Signed

How the actual fuck is this petition being led by The Mirror? Seriously?

Why is it that we’re relying on a fucking tabloid to push for the right thing to happen?

Why isn’t this splattered across the front pages of the BBC, Times, Telegraph and every bloody news source there is. But instead we get news of Trump sacking another minion, for example.

Why isn’t this being spoken about?

gluteustothemaximus · 14/03/2018 11:32

Thanks Professor, I've posted the link to the petition on there.

Yes, ohfour - The Mirror indeed. It should be everywhere.

It made me sad to see that the petitions for elephant tusks being imported (which I did sign too) had 1.3 million signatures. But this one has barely reached 15,000. In fact, most animal petitions are in the millions.

Is there anyone famous I can tweet who would get good coverage on this issue?

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 11:39

Joanna Williams has a piece on spiked online which encapsulated a lot of my feelings around this.

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 11:43

Take a look at Stella Creasy MP Tweeting on this.

I think MPs should stop with the tweeting generally but that's a side issue.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/03/2018 12:10

You can bet a lot of it is down to councils/social workers/police once again being terrified of being seen as demonising certain racial groups/ cultures, and hence bending over backwards to find excuses for doing nothing, or very little.
There are times when PC-ness has a lot to answer for.

drinkswineoutofamug · 14/03/2018 12:33

I'm horrified by it. How was it missed.
My quick back story , my daughter went to an sen school. The school informed me that there were groups of men hanging around the school and known CSE . My daughter was taken by these men. Luckily nothing happened to her. I accused the school of not protecting her welfare. Nothing was done. I removed her from the school. The school reported me to SS. Because I wanted to protect my daughter. 2 years later the police sat in front of SS and told me I had done the right thing. But no body backed me up I was neglectful and was unable to safeguard my child according to SS.

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 12:37

See in your own story it's not missed: parents are undermined, it's collusion imo.

TheQueef · 14/03/2018 12:46

The bottom line is these gangs flourished because the authorities were afraid of being accused or labelled racist.

The major contributor in this offense and the others had to be ignored.

It still is being ignored and it adds insult to injury for the victims. The thousands of victims.

beguilingeyes · 14/03/2018 12:48

Girls/women just aren't valued in our society. It's like when the Jimmy Savile thing broke and the PTB said that the accusers were 'just women'.

Weinstein had hundreds of accusers before it started to be taken seriously. One man speaks up about Kevin Spacey and everyone is all over it. Also no-one is abusing/disbelieving the victim.

SanPellegrini · 14/03/2018 13:18

Signed

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 16:48

Bump.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 16:52

Agree that misogny is the big one here with classism and racism (fear of being seen to be) coming in a close second.

Thing is women and girls have been ignored with attackers who were not from these backgrounds so the racism thing although while obviosuly a factor in this one, doesn't satisfactorily explain it.

gluteustothemaximus · 14/03/2018 17:46

This.

One man’s word, career over.

Hundreds of women’s accounts...why didn’t you come forward before, why didn’t you just say no, why didn’t you get away, why didn’t you tell anyone.....and HW is in some sort of therapy centre (spa holiday) - and nothing has been done.

thats not what happened at al with spacey

tallulahwullah · 15/03/2018 06:32

I hate to say it but this is what happens when whole towns are majorly immigrants they have not respected, accepted or even tried to blend in with our British values.
I don't know what the answer is but more needs to be done?!
Brexit is a good start!

StealthPolarBear · 15/03/2018 06:32

Aaargh

Street2 · 15/03/2018 07:55

"I hate to say it but this is what happens when whole towns are majorly immigrants they have not respected, accepted or even tried to blend in with our British values."

You mean like the British values that prevented the child abuse in churches, boarding schools and by British 3rd sector workers in developing countries?

British values have NOTHING to do with this dreadful stuff.

I think it's classicism, sexism and racism. In the case of councils and social workers there is of course ignorance, prejudice and deep corruption. I fear no much will change Sad.

Street2 · 15/03/2018 08:03

I am not saying btw that the fact that these councils have large homogenous ethnic groups don't play a role in this situation, I believe it does.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/03/2018 10:30

Only immigrants abuse now? My abuser was Welsh. From Cardiff. Hmm

gluteustothemaximus · 15/03/2018 10:50

My rapist was white and from Oxford. My other rapist was white Irish.

My friend's rapist was Pakistani.

If we listed all the rapists and sexual assaults on here, there would be a huge mix, and only one thing in common.

THEY ARE ALL MEN.

OP posts:
PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/03/2018 10:56

Exactly gluteus.

RideOn · 15/03/2018 11:16

Signed the petition gluteus, thanks for the link

I think it happens when there’s a huge power imbalance and then people refuse to look too closely at a group for any reason. That group could be white catholic priests or Pakistani taxi drivers.
We can’t excuse the church and we can’t excuse these grooming gangs. Looking at what the specific group has in common is useful in that it allows you to look at HOW the abuse is taking place -where, under what circumstances etc etc.
I understand that no one wants this to be used as fodder for anti immigrant/anti Muslim sentiment. At the same time, if there’s a thing a group of abusers havevin common that needs to be used in the context of the investigation.

The truth is neither ‘nothing to see here’ or ‘all immigrants are ...’ it’s that a group of men used the factors common to their group to facilitate this abuse. In the case of clergy it was their status in the community , access to children in the community and inditutions, a strong anti whistleblower attitude and the night of the church actively covering things up.
This inquiry needs to look st how these men operated - how girls were groomed, transported etc and what failings and oversights led to this being overlooked or actively covered up. Doing that is not racist, any more than rooting out abuse in the church is anti catholic.

ddrmum · 15/03/2018 11:24

I agree with everyone above - what exactly will it take to expose this multi generational abuse for the outrageous scandal that it truly is? I cannot understand why it is not splashed over every broadsheet and red top, or why it is not headline news nationally - every day?

Those who covered it up or ignored it are as bad as those men who abused these girls.
Having had recent dealings with SS, I was shocked and appalled at how indifferent some were to the abuse of a child - different to these reports but abuse nonetheless.
I am truly frightened for the future of young women and girls in this country.

AliceBuysAbar · 15/03/2018 11:47

Kochab has put it well. Thanks
