I've not seen a thread about it at all, but surely there must be?

I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.

Dignify truth.

Haven't seen much coming out of either May or Boris. Have you?

Perhaps I've missed an epiphany?

counterpoint · 29/03/2018 22:41

The only reason this diplomatic faux pas by Boris& May has not resulted in a third world war is probably due to the patience and tolerance of Putin.

Boris&May have far less to lose - they have a crumbling economy that they wish will be taken off their hands.

Shame our Corbyn has been sidetracked by the transfolk ...

yolofish · 29/03/2018 23:20

do we have a bot thingy present??

counterpoint · 30/03/2018 00:00

Very sad when critical thinking is dead. Makes it too easy for our politicians.

BakedBeans47 · 30/03/2018 00:17

the patience and tolerance of Putin.

Really?

Deux · 30/03/2018 00:24

I see we’ve been infiltrated by Putin's lot. Or maybe counterpoint is from the Russian Embassy, has a similar tone.

Perhaps we had an antidote.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/03/2018 08:13

Anyway.., :)

It is really good news about Yulia.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43588450

Hopefully she is able to give more information, if it's something she knows. I don't expect we will hear about it for some time to come, while they try and find the actual people who were sponsored to carry out the attack. Like any murder/attempted murder case, there will be details kept quiet and of course this one crosses international boundaries.

OP posts:
pestilentialboundary · 30/03/2018 08:41

Now Yulia is 'conscious and talking', she is going to want someone to talk to. Probably someone who speaks Russian; friends, family, someone from the consul. I hope she is allowed to make the choice.

We have apparently shared "unprecedented levels"of intelligence. However, there are some grumblings of no proof yet from places like the German opposition party. It would be nice if OPCW could at least confirm. A new cold war, although good for world economics and stability, is a big deal. I can not be the only one who remembers constructing make shift nuclear bunkers at school (just in case).

All of the evidence will probably not be available to us mere mortals for decades. Probably a few less decades than Dr Kelly's suicide.

The differences between keeping an open mind, being brain washed, shutting down conversations, and wholeheartedly believing all conspiracy theories are quite small. Beyond reasonable doubt, should apply to every body.

peridito · 30/03/2018 09:04

It's completely agree Pestilential .So frustrating .
I wonder how Yulia will fare .

counterpoint · 30/03/2018 09:19

So sad when people can not accept another point of view.

Do you really think the intelligent people of Britain believe Boris and May's assertions - and so quickly after all the Brexit lies and double-speak?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/03/2018 11:45

Fascinating Bore. Thanks for the links. It's been interesting to watch on twitter. It's a shame that people still struggle to discern reality from trolling and don't ask themselves why an unusual counter narrative is being espoused against all logic.

OP posts:
BoreOfWhabylon · 30/03/2018 12:19

Indeed Kitten

pestilentialboundary · 30/03/2018 14:11

One could say it is a distraction Kitten

counterpoint · 30/03/2018 15:05

The only trolling I've noticed here is the blind fellowship of Boris&May and the jingoistic calls against Russia. Mob mentality!

Very pleased that not only was our policeman swiftly resurrected from the death-throes of the deadliest (huh to that!) agent on earth; but, we now also have another resurrection in time for Easter.

If our gung-ho leaders had waited a few days before accusing Russia, their most precious, so-called evidence (i.e. the deadliness of this 1000-fold super-strength door-knob cleaner), would have fallen to pieces. Explains the urgency to rush to accuse Russia, no doubt. Bet Boris is pissed off his mileage is running out of fuel ... fuel we'll have to find from elsewhere (oh, forgot, May was busy sealing deals with Saudis; we'll be OK - after all, we have so much more in common with the Saudis).

DorynownotFloundering · 31/03/2018 10:26

counterpoint
Having come late to the thread, I have actually been very impressed by the lack of jingoistic hysteria. Lots of questions and info sharing, very informative.
Personally I DO think the powers that be were fumbling in the dark I initially, hence the perceived overkill on precautions and warnings. As a timeline is emerging esp with Yulia hopefully able to help, we will hear more. .
I'm glad to hear the govt are injecting some cash into the local business community, least they can do really.

counterpoint · 31/03/2018 14:53

Welcome to the thread but there's a lot to take in to make an accurate evaluation. Jingoism has been rife, imho, as I have had a few attacks when I suggested there might be more to this than our politicians would like us to believe/accept. Doubting these politicians is something I never thought I'd have to bring up on mumsnet as generally we do have a fair few cynics (a few, thankfully, also posted some questions here worth thinking about further).

Unfortunately, now that the tide is turning, and perhaps when the (still missing) evidence really has to come up for close scrutiny, comments did deteriorate with the last few posters, hence my own outburst against being labeled a troll for mentioning that things are far from right with Boris&May's narrative.

There's no doubt there were some good debates about how to work out what the poison was; but, they mostly mirrored the already decided and firm foregone conclusion of Boris&May that it was indeed Novichock and indeed made in Russia. That's it; decided!

I find it unbelievable that otherwise questioning people have now accepted the conclusion from our establishment without actually having seen any evidence (masks, clothing, cranes removing trucks etc are not 'evidence').

What was the point of all the discussions about the many 'kinds of data' that can be released that would provide the proof for the conclusion if then people roll over and accept what our politicians say without seeing any data?

After all, the Novichok inventor is in the USA, not Russia, right?.

TrojanWhore · 31/03/2018 14:56

"After all, the Novichok inventor is in the USA, not Russia, right?"

Not according to anything I've seen published, and of course although Russia has never declared it, they have admitted it (mentioned by Russian officials in a Russian court in a treason case)

member · 31/03/2018 15:38

I’m new to the thread but have been following. It is a puzzle how the agent took so long to work; I wonder whether they’ve actually ingested it from contaminated hands when drinking/eating out. Perhaps if they were wearing gloves that they took off when they went into the pub/Zizzis so it transferred directly onto their hands?

counterpoint · 31/03/2018 16:08

Not according to anything I've seen published

Oh dear, it has been mentioned in many newspaper articles as well as on his Wiki page:

"Vil Mirzayanov was released, but kept under house arrest and observation. When allowed to do so by Russian authorities, he relocated to the United States where he presently resides, taking a position at Rutgers University in New Jersey."

counterpoint · 31/03/2018 16:10

although Russia has never declared it, they have admitted it

What does this mean in plain English?

TrojanWhore · 31/03/2018 17:53

It means it has not been declared to the OPCW.

But the Russian authorities have admitted it exists because in a 1995 court case against Leonid Rink, who said he had worked for 27 years at the state Scientific Research Institute of Organic Chemistry and Technology in Shikhani, and who was accused of selling a Novichok nerve agent to be used in a criminal hit. According to Reuters, Rink received a suspended one-year sentence after admitting to selling the nerve agent, which he was storing in his garage.

counterpoint · 31/03/2018 19:08

Oh, you mean the nerve agent(s). That's old news about their synthesis and speculative existence.

Probably best not hope too much from the OPCW, either over how comprehensive their controls are to determine what (if any) substance(s) was/were picked up by the unfortunate spies or how unbiased OPCW's evaluation can possibly be with so much media expectation and politics already in play. Turkey seems to have blasted off a lot of stuff they haven't got to the bottom of yet.

Besides, the OPCW have said they may need 3 or 4 weeks to work out what the Salisbury Substance is; but, our clever duo, Boris&May, knew immediately what it was! So there!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/03/2018 19:24

I think if you are worried about premature declarations counterpoint, maybe you should hold your horses a little until the OPWC have said what it is. They are slow and bureaucratic though, it took them two months to confirm Sarin was used in Syria. They also probably won't say where it came from. That appears to be beyond their remit.
