"No-one could say they were innocent. Those slags dancing around"

This sent a chill through me. The level of hatred for women in some of the men we live among, is so worrying and is not seen as a particular issue. This was what one of those men jailed today said about blowing up the Ministry of Sound. The idea of young women dancing around, enjoying thenselves, was such anathema to him, that he honestly thought if he blew them up, that would be recieved more positively in the general population as these particular victims wouldn't be "innocent".

WTF is going on in these men's minds and why isn't this mysogyny being taken as seriously as racism?

i felt the same when i heard that today.grim

oliveoil · 30/04/2007 22:16

maybe completely off topic but have you watched MTV or similar recently?

omg, I had to turn it off

half naked women, grinding all over the show, with dd1 (4) and dd2 (2) looking at it bemused

what sort of message is that giving out to children if their viewing isn't monitored?

Nikki76 · 30/04/2007 22:19

Totally agree! Its cause of a lot of eating disorders in teenagers as well imho!

moondog · 30/04/2007 22:21

I agree olive.
Only catch it at the gym and it enrages me.

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:22

olie i was thinking this very same thing today. I used to have MTV or similar on all day, almost, as background music. Its soft porn FGS

I don't wan tmy DD bumping and grinding just yet thankyouverymuch

Now i have the radio on

oliveoil · 30/04/2007 22:22

dh (grr) had changed the channel and wondered off so I assumed Fifi or something was on but instead it was a porn video by the looks of it

vvvv bad

oliveoil · 30/04/2007 22:23

wandered

ruty · 30/04/2007 22:23

bloody terrifying.

southeastastra · 30/04/2007 22:23

yes but they're talking about normal clubbers at the ministry of sound not mtv vids

edam · 30/04/2007 22:24

Agree Caligula.

oliveoil · 30/04/2007 22:24

I know, I am just saying that these images are shown all the time and may make some men think of women in this way

WideWebWitch · 30/04/2007 22:25

It's everywhere isn't it? In the low level of rape convictions, in the lads mags and our cultural acceptance of them etc etc. Vile, vile.

WideWebWitch · 30/04/2007 22:25

misogyny, I meant, is everywhere.

That is shocking Caligua.
Agree that misogyny is rife in society.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/04/2007 22:31

It is.

Often it is so thinly veiled in this country it amazes me it goes apparently unchecked.

CharlotteSometimes · 01/05/2007 16:29

Very good question ...

PetronellaPinkPants · 01/05/2007 16:34

I think slags can be a generally derogatory term and could refer to men and women??

ruty · 01/05/2007 17:55

never heard of a man being called a slag. Quite obviously referring to women.

lulumama · 01/05/2007 18:08

but those men were extremists and fanatics, who vilify women, immodesty, and westerners on the whole, no? i think the fact that the population in general was horrified by what happened, does show that not all men think like this

although there does still seem to be a 'she was asking for it by wearing a short skirt/revealing clothes' feeling still regarding rape and sexual assault

don;t know what the answer is, as nothing seems to have changed much in the 15 years or so i have been aware of such issues

the racism is the issue, whether disguised by misogyny or not

lulumama · 01/05/2007 18:09

men are never slags though are they, they are 'real men', always the woman who is the slag

edam · 01/05/2007 18:11

Agree with ruty, slag is a derogatory term for a woman. And the misogyny at all levels of society is profoundly depressing. My sister's involved in a court case atm and her barrister says you can't bring a claim under the human rights act for sex discrimination without proving a case under one of the other provisions first. The UK Human Rights Act was deliberately written this way 'to stop frivolous cases'. Right, so women can't be trusted to exercise their legal rights, unlike those sane, sensible men, huh?

NotanOtter · 01/05/2007 18:12

women are still an underclass

edam · 01/05/2007 18:14

I think luluamama's actually put her finger on it although reads it differently from me. 'Racism's the issue' - even those who try to fight discrimination seem to think racism is somehow more important than sexism. We can forget about prejudice against women because it's not as important.

And people are horrified by terrorism, not by hatred of women. Both should be of concern but only one is.

lulumama · 01/05/2007 18:17

i think that the hatred of women is being used to fuel some branches of terrorist activity, and disguised as religious belief , thereby rendering it more acceptable than out and out sexism

hatred of any person, whether on the grounds of their gender, sexuality, religious belief, colour or anything else, is plain wrong

but still engendered in some parts of all societies and countries

i really don;t know what the answer is, as some people are really impervious to education about such thing

hence the foothold the BNP can gain in areas

racism can come from whites and non whites as can sexism and all forms of discrimination
