OK I took it upon myself in my arrogance. Nah, just enjoyed all the views whether we agreed or not, it has been very interesting.

So carry on folks. Link below to the original thread.

Martina - an ID check when travelling to the UK mainland is totally, absolutely unacceptable to the DUP.

Such a proposal means the DUP (you do know who they are, don't you?) will refuse to support May and the Conservative government will fall.

Are you actually in the UK? Can you not read? Do you not understand this?

Maryz · 03/12/2017 20:57

Free movement for Irish - how will you know they are Irish without checks?

Switzerland/Germany etc., Norway/Sweden etc - they are all in Schengen - do you know what that is?

You must be a troll; there cannot surely be a person on the planet who believes what you are saying [baffled]

"No big deal" - tell the DUP that Shock

Martina888 · 03/12/2017 21:00

MaryZ:

fairly sure the DUP can be made to see the sense in this, as it won't actually be a border, just an ID check, that ALREADY exists, ie. if you get on a plane

worst case scenario: We can do it without DUP support

LaurieMarlow · 03/12/2017 21:00

martina your arguments on the border are so naive, I'm not even going to engage with them. Come back when you have a clue.

But more generally, you understand that the Irish don't really like or trust the British, right? And that they'd never, in a million years opt to have a closer relationship with them than they have right now? You should have seen the flag waving on the 1916 centennial celebrations. And on top of that they are extremely pro the EU.

As an Irish person, I take it for granted that everyone gets this, but it would seem not. Your posts read they're coming from an alternative universe.

bearstrikesback · 03/12/2017 21:00

But Maryz don't you know that the Irish all wear little Leprachaun costumes, so they are very obvious indeed.

You can't argue with stupid.

treaclesoda · 03/12/2017 21:01

It's an ID check that you have to do nearly all the time anyway, such as boarding a domestic flight, opening a bank account, staying at a hotel etc..

No it's not, it's nothing like that. It would mean that someone from England could travel to Scotland or Wales but I couldn't because I live in N Ireland. How would that be fair? I travel by ferry to the UK mainland at least once a year and whilst the driver of the car may have to show a driving license (and even that only happens sometimes), no one else has to provide ID. Why should we if no one else in the UK has to?

Martina888 · 03/12/2017 21:01

Mary:

Ireland and UK will have Common Travel area, same as Shengen in principle just for 2 countries instead - so this is no change

and yes, passports will be checked for all, if Irish or Brit then can be waved on through

Maryz · 03/12/2017 21:02

SwedishEdith, both Norway and Sweden are in Schengen. The UK has refused to join. There is no comparison.

"putting NI into a diplomatic quarantine with an expiry date set for ten years hence (which is about as long as it will take to develop the systems). Then wait for the NI assembly to get its act together and devolve it." - the DUP will NEVER agree to this. They want to stay part of the UK, that won't change in ten years, or a hundred. There is no way they will support any suggestion that indicates any weakening of the NI link with the UK.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/12/2017 21:02

nonsense, there is actually a similar non-border set up alreadey

ie. Switzerland/Germany etc

Switzerland is in EFTA (free trade) and Schengen - the UK won't be.

Norway/Sweden

Norway is in the EEA (signed up to the 4 freedoms - we won't be)

Croatia/Bulgaria etc

Both in the EU

treaclesoda · 03/12/2017 21:03

worst case scenario: We can do it without DUP support

And risk civil unrest on a massive scale.

LaurieMarlow wrote: 'martina your arguments on the border are so naive, I'm not even going to engage with them. Come back when you have a clue.'

That is not an argument, rather, it is a blatant ducking of the issue. Noted.

Martina888 · 03/12/2017 21:05

treacle:

of course you can travel to mainland UK- you just need to show ID! and that's not difficult to do

treaclesoda · 03/12/2017 21:05

and yes, passports will be checked for all, if Irish or Brit then can be waved on through

And if a N Ireland citizen doesn't have a passport? They are not allowed to travel freely within the UK? Despite living in the UK and being a UK tax payer etc?

SwedishEdith · 03/12/2017 21:06

Mary, I know. I'm just putting more information out there for anyone else reading and thinking Martina might actually be making any sense.

LaurieMarlow · 03/12/2017 21:07

You are the one ducking the issue. Or are you that freaking dumb?

By all means contact your MP and tell them you've sorted it. Then they can get straight on to Junker and Coveney.

treaclesoda · 03/12/2017 21:07

of course you can travel to mainland UK- you just need to show ID! and that's not difficult to do

It's not that it's difficult it's that it's unfair.

Martina888 · 03/12/2017 21:07

Itsall:

I meant Croatia/Bosnia

and Shengen so what, we have our own mini one alreay, the CTA - and this will continue, so what's all the fuss about?

Maryz · 03/12/2017 21:08

"fairly sure the DUP can be made to see the sense in this, as it won't actually be a border, just an ID check, that ALREADY exists, ie. if you get on a plane"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Jaysus, you couldn't make it up.

treaclesoda wrote: 'And if a N Ireland citizen doesn't have a passport? They are not allowed to travel freely within the UK? Despite living in the UK and being a UK tax payer etc?'

Other official forms of ID could easily be made acceptable for this purpose

coffeeclub · 03/12/2017 21:09

passports will be checked for all, if Irish or Brit then can be waved on through

The DUP would never agree to that.

treaclesoda · 03/12/2017 21:11

But why should I identify myself when someone in Scotland doesn't have to identify themselves to go to England? A Mancunian doesn't have to identify themselves to go to Liverpool etc.

Maryz · 03/12/2017 21:11

Sorry, Swedish, I just re-read your post and realise what you are getting at.

I'm sort of at the stage when I don't know if newspaper articles are serious or tongue in cheek, and it's bleeding over to here.

I just can't believe the ignorance Shock - and the seeming price in that ignorance Shock. It's just bizarre. I mean, this is British politicians talking about their own country, and they have no idea of either the history or the current situation. It's just weird.

Martina888 · 03/12/2017 21:12

treaclesoda wrote: 'It's not that it's difficult it's that it's unfair'

LOL, well boo hoo, guess what - life throws up some minor inconveniences from time to time

The UK voted to Leave EU and that includes NI

Maryz · 03/12/2017 21:13

"pride" not "price", obviously [sigh]

"and Shengen so what"

Can I report someone for complete an utter ignorance, or are we meant to put up with this?

Martina888 · 03/12/2017 21:13

treacle:

because it's a minor compromise you must make in order to aid the UK in leaving the EU
