OK I took it upon myself in my arrogance. Nah, just enjoyed all the views whether we agreed or not, it has been very interesting.

So carry on folks. Link below to the original thread.

Gibraltarians won’t have free movement into Spain (and vv)

FannagBeg · 04/12/2017 19:20

Where does that leave the crown dependencies and Gib, though?

The Isle of Man still has farmers, a fishing fleet and tourism. We're not all mates of Lewis Hamilton or fawning over millionaires who'd bring the birch back.

(The Island also needs to sort its shit out over abortion. It's position is embarrassing and cruel.)

FannagBeg · 04/12/2017 19:21

Indeed, Craic.

CraicMammy · 04/12/2017 19:21

The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are outside the EU. So are the Falklands.

Imagine, this could all have been avoided if Farage had bought a holiday home in Douglas.

cathyclown · 04/12/2017 19:24

CraicMammy,

Was in Gibraltar earlier in the year, all passports checked, full Customs control etc. The queue was unbelievable. A bit different to NI/ROI situation.

CraicMammy · 04/12/2017 19:24

I know it’s off-topic but what are the abortion laws in the IOM? Do women have to travel to England to access services? What are the penalties for obtaining / providing s termination?

Martina888 · 04/12/2017 19:24

Itsall@

that's why I said Norway-style , ie. without FOM, that would work

let the EU compromise , if not then it's their fault if a border has to be put in between NI/ROI

Martina888 · 04/12/2017 19:25

and what the heck has Gibraltar gotta do with it? they can sort something out with Spain/Uk - it's a separate topic

FannagBeg · 04/12/2017 19:26

The Isle of Man has a long history of common purse and reciprocal agreements with the UK. So sad to see those under threat.

It would surprise me at all to find out many MEPs have investments in Manx property and business portfolios. Meanwhile young Manx families can't get houses. (The old story, in many parts of the British Islands.)

Anyway sorry to get sidetracked. Apologies.

CraicMammy · 04/12/2017 19:29

cathyclown was that entering / leaving from Spain? I don’t know but I’ve the feeling Gib’s membership of the EU has been a moot point. Does anyone on here know the precise position?

I struggle to get my head round the situation where Gib voted c.99% for the UK to remain, yet they are being given so little consideration in the negotiations. I’d be so angry if I lived there.

FannagBeg · 04/12/2017 19:32

Craic www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-isle-of-man-41306864

Current situation is that abortion is illegal, but hopefully that could change - but it will still I think be much more restrictive than in the 'mainland' UK.

I also grew up having to pay for contraception, and being massively judged by the family doctor for asking, when it was free in the UK.

cathyclown · 04/12/2017 19:37

Craic,

Trying to remember here. I am nearly sure passport control was on entry to Gibraltar, but the Customs examination was on exit. Spot check on passports going into Spain.

Gibraltar is duty free so I can understand the smuggling thing Gib to Spain really.

*A lot of callers said Ireland should just rejoin the UK and it will all be solved,

OR,

NI should just join ROI in a United Ireland and it will all be solved*

Haven’t RTFT but this says it all really about many attitudes towards Ireland.

It’s v back of the envelope but assuming a Norway style deal, as M888 suggests, paying a grant to the EU at the same rate per person as Norway does, would cost UK £88million per week.

Would we be happy with that?

JustHope · 04/12/2017 19:53

Currently no passport checks on arrival into Gatwick from Ireland, although passport is checked on arriving into Ireland from the UKConfused Something to do with the CTA.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/12/2017 19:56

£88 million per week is a better deal than £150+ million per week tbh.

cathyclown · 04/12/2017 19:58

JustHope,

When travelling from ROI to UK to any airport I have been funnelled (nicely) into a UK, ROI/Channel Islands/IOM separate area and straight through.

When travelling from uk to Ireland have to join the EU queue. No bother, each country has their own rules.

Martina888 · 04/12/2017 20:08

Craic:

paying a grant? well, there's the utterly absurd and spineless 'divorce' bill that May has virtuallly agreed to so I guess that would cover it

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2017 20:10

that's why I said Norway-style , ie. without FOM, that would work

No it wouldn't. Can't have three freedoms without the 4th (movement)

let the EU compromise , if not then it's their fault if a border has to be put in between NI/ROI

They can't compromise - the EU is literally built on those principles. And it's no-ones fault other than those fuckwits who thought a referendum was a good idea, and those fuckwits who voted for Brexit

Martina888 · 04/12/2017 20:11

this is so easily sortable, just the stubborn Remainers and EU top bras clinging onto their idealisme - have Norway style deal sans FOM and it's job done, fairly sure this is where we'll end up more or less

Martina888 · 04/12/2017 20:12

it's all:

sounds like you're being over-dogmatic there , most likely some kind of compromise by EU on the 4 dvine principles, if not then there'll have to be a border at NI/ROI

Martina888 · 04/12/2017 20:15

itsall@

kind of childlike your disdain for over half the British electorate and politicains

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2017 20:15

Not dogmatic, just have a grasp on reality.
