OK I took it upon myself in my arrogance. Nah, just enjoyed all the views whether we agreed or not, it has been very interesting.

So carry on folks. Link below to the original thread.

Statement from May imminent apparently

Maryz · 04/12/2017 15:57

Couldn't happen to a nicer person, bear [cynical]

I don't give a shite about Foster or the DUP, but I do feel for the people of NI. It must be quite a shock to realise that no-one, even the elected government (especially them, really) cares AT ALL about the opinions of a whole section of the UK.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2017 15:58

No agreement. Totally expected but still FFS

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:00

Jean-Claude Juncker says it 'was not possible to reach agreement on Brexit negotiations today'

What a surprise. Not. There is no solution.

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:01

Though it does demonstrate that the DUP have influence.

Abra1d · 04/12/2017 16:01

Juncker really isn’t helping.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2017 16:01

It does sound like they are hopefully of coming to an agreement later in the week though?

TKRedLemonade · 04/12/2017 16:09

They had an agreement they just never ran it by the politicians in NI.....who surprise surprise were not impressed. I can imagine TM begging Arlene Foster ( " but you are staying in the EU like the rest of us secretly want to but can't so what's the problem Arlene......ULSTER SAYS NO)

Also Scotland, London and the leavers Wales also wanted to have the same = no deal....and ther is nothing possible really as now that this was dangled in front of Ireland and the EU all else will seem crap in comparison.

treaclesoda · 04/12/2017 16:15

I've lived in N Ireland my whole life and I don't think I've ever felt as hopeless about our future as I do today, and I'm old enough to remember some of the really dark days. At least in the dark days the vast majority of people were united in horror, and hope for the future. Now we're just united in feeling isolated.

Flamingoingmad · 04/12/2017 16:17

This is unbelievable- i'm oscillating between outrage and amusement. what an omnishambles.

Wondering if we could be heading towards another GE- if a Party campaigned on a Remain manifesto it would be interesting to see what the outcome would be.

Me too treacle. I feel sorry for the Unionist community. It must be a kick in the teeth to realise how very little their idols think of them. At least the nationalists have always known the British didn’t give a shit.

What a mess. Sad

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:29

It's not Junker who isn't helping.

The solution proposed today isn't a new one; it's one Ireland and the EU had offered - and it's a massive offer by the EU, to let part of a country have full EU benefits, when the country itself isn't contributing to the EU at all.

May would happily have jumped at it - but forgot that for Ulster Unionists it was a very big start to a very slippery slope and they weren't going to agree.

I still think it's the only solution that might actually be relatively peaceful though. The alternative - a hard land border - is truly unthinkable.

We are back (yet again) to square one, aren't we Sad

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:30

And now Sinn Fein are calling on the DUP to "act in the common good".

Mary-Lou is also a twat. What a stupid thing to say at this point Hmm

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:31

She says it's not the time for petty political point scoring - while doing a bit of petty political point scoring of her own. FFS.

cathyclown · 04/12/2017 16:36

I now wish May had procured an overall majority in her vanity election!

It is ridiculous that a few MPs in the DUP could have this much power over so many people.

But I am hopeful that something will be sorted out. Otherwise no progress to Phase 2.

Caught a tweet saying May has offered full regulatory alignment to the entire UK/ROI. This was stated by the presenter Iain Dale, who is not a happy bunny today.

Hmmm no idea if it's true. I don't use twitter but someone else who does might just pick up on it. Probably rubbish, but still.

And the champagne is still on ice in Dublin.

Haven't heard anything from Vlad yet. He must be sweating.

I wish someone could explain to me why the DUP are so insistent that there must be no differences between NI and the rest of the UK. There are loads of differences already, if they are so keen on having exactly the same laws they can start allowing abortion for a start.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2017 16:50

Also Scotland, London and the leavers Wales also wanted to have the same

And Gibraltar...

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:51

Free regulatory alignment to the entire UK/ROI has been mooted. The EU are even happy to go along with it. As they are happy for the entire UK to be included in the customs union/trade area/travel area/etc etc.

In fact, that's what the UK wants - they want to stay in the Single Market, the Customs Union, the Free Trade Zone, all that type of thing, but also be free to have Trade Deals with other countries, and do all that while restricting how many EU citizens can enter the UK.

Basically they want to have their cake and eat it, and people like J R-M and even May themselves have said or implied that the EU should let them, and that anything else is an "unreasonable demand" from the EU.

Scarily, many people in the UK seem to believe this, and they too are blaming the EU (and now Ireland) for the impasse.

annandale · 04/12/2017 16:53

This may also add even more costs for those travelling from NI to other provinces for an abortion - they will need a passport as well.

I still think it's the only possible option if we are really going to do this, but what a murky mass of past compromises, fudges and deals it is bringing into the light.

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:53

sincey, it's because the DUP recognise that this is step one in devolution and therefore step one towards a united Ireland.

The entire premise of the DUP is that the six counties are part of the UK and will always be. If a set-up meant that the economy was treated differently and that citizens needed passports to enter the "proper" UK, then all of a sudden NI is not a full part of the EU.

Unionists will never accept this; I have no idea whether (or why) May thought they would.

Maryz · 04/12/2017 16:55

Sorry, I left out a sentence two posts up.

I said "The EU are even happy to go along with it. As they are happy for the entire UK to be included in the customs union/trade area/travel area/etc etc." I should have added: In return the EU want the UK to allow free movement of people. They won't allow free trade, but barriers to movement.

LivLemler · 04/12/2017 16:57

What an utter shambles. I found myself almost feeling sorry for Arlene Foster watching the video of her press conference, not a feeling I ever expected to feel.

Flowers to treacle in particular, whose posts on NI I always enjoy.

So, back where we were at the start of thread 1 then? Everyone's just more unhappy about it.

Maryz · 04/12/2017 17:04

annandale, I never thought I'd say this, but there is now a serious possibility that people will have to travel to Dublin from Belfast to access abortions.

What a mindfuck.
