What do people think is most likely to happen with the Irish/UK border?

What is the most likely solution?

OP posts:

On the contrary, I think the EU did not know how much sway Ireland would hold within the EU. What have they 4 or 5 million people?

SoupyNorman · 27/11/2017 22:15

Anti-Irish racism has a long and shameful history in Britain. There is plenty of evidence of this over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries.

As an Irish person I find your above post offensive and racist.

cathyclown · 27/11/2017 22:15

Much and all as the UK would love not to have to deal the the Irish border, they are going to have to.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:16

There are probably twice as many people in the city of London than there are in the entirety of Ireland. Yet, Ireland gets more say than most. That's far from infantile. That's clever.

LivLemler · 27/11/2017 22:17

No, I didn't, I quoted Soupy.

But by saying Ireland is like "the rather annoying and misbehaved little sister" and who "makes a show of the ... grown-ups" is akin to saying Ireland is infantile.

I know you think you're being supportive to the Irish cause, but you really aren't. This patronising attitude of silly little Ireland, look at them having a good old try, sure we'll pat them on the head and then send them on to the bar while the real work happens, is completely unhelpful and insulting. We are not the naughty little sister. We don't get away with any more than any other nation.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:18

I think the Irish/English 'question' goes back 800 years actually Soupy. Not 200.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:19

Shocker of the day. I'm Irish.

cathyclown · 27/11/2017 22:20

UK is still to this day suffering PTSD as result of post colonial angst.

Ireland is just one of those countries that UK feels should still be part of the Empire.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:22

The empire has fallen.

lalalonglegs · 27/11/2017 22:22

But all EU countries get a veto - their size has nothing to do with it. Malta has a veto. The UK had a veto until it decided to take its ball home and not play anymore. I don't understand why you keep going on about Ireland being a special case.

And by the way, racism is a general term that applies to making (usually) derogatory comments about people from a different race or nationality. Trying to excuse yourself by saying the Irish aren't a race and therefore you aren't being racist is just lame.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:24

Ireland has come to a point where our President can visit England and the Queen can visit Ireland. With no bombs going off. Ireland and England are so linked now. Most English people have Irish heritage. Brexit is a load of nuisance for the Irish/English situation.

SoupyNorman · 27/11/2017 22:25

I think the Irish/English 'question' goes back 800 years actually Soupy. Not 200.

I know you're trying to be all superior with this post, but the upsurge of anti-Irish racism amongst the wider British public is tied to the beginnings of large-scale Irish immigration to Britain in the post-Famine era.

HTH

I'm Irish, so I don't think your definition of racism covers me dear.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:26

Report to your hearts content.

SoupyNorman · 27/11/2017 22:29

Really, Whoyagonna? Just yesterday you were claiming your knowledge of Irish history stemmed from your having once dated an Irishman:

I used to date an Irishman so unfortunately know more than I care to know about Irish history. grin

Hmm
SoupyNorman · 27/11/2017 22:30

How curious that you wouldn't have mentioned that you yourself were Irish in that post. Unless, wait a minute, ah yes that's it: you're talking bollocks now.

I chose not to voice my nationality as the interpretation would be biased.

lalalonglegs · 27/11/2017 22:33

Yup, I'm going to (reluctantly) claim you as English.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:34

See, we're far from infantile and are in fact cute hoors. Wink

SoupyNorman · 27/11/2017 22:34

Yeah, like I said, bollocks.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:37

How exactly did you think I knew so much about Ireland if I was English? Irish politics doesn't get reported on BBC/SKY or other mainstream media.

cathyclown · 27/11/2017 22:37

The Empire might be gone, but the trauma of losing it country by country still remains.

Post Colonial racism, crisis, trauma call it what you will, is a factor for some, I said some, and that could be why Ireland is subjected to subtle but targeted racism/bullying/and put downs to this day.

Whoyagonna · 27/11/2017 22:38

Anyone have a clue what's going on in Luxembourg at the moment? No? Didn't think so.
