I watched it. Disgusted with Paget Brown. Why can't he admit to feeling guilty? That's the natural human reaction but oh no, he's 'distressed' but not taking responsibility. Awful example of leadership.

The fire union man was very good.

lobsterface · 19/06/2017 21:13

Watching it on catch up, they continued filming that poor lady who got news of her brother for far too long. So, so sad.

FromAtoBin21months · 19/06/2017 21:21

rino that's what I was thinking. I was appalled by him! he doesn't even give a fuck.

BahHumbygge · 19/06/2017 21:22

OMG that was so harrowing to watch. I still can't get my head round the scale of the tragedy and the aftermath.

I watched a clip earlier from House of Cards in 1993 about a tower block fire in E London that was uncanniliy prescient, down to the start of the fire being on the 4th floor.

Watching Panorama just now seemed surreally like watching a hardhitting drama about a dystopian life in a future Britain. But it still keeps hitting me that it's real several days on. I can't begin to think what the poor families, survivors and community are going through.

There needs to be a political legacy to come out of this awful tragedy.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/06/2017 21:24

Paget Brown was a disgrace.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 19/06/2017 21:31

Oh shame on him

So firefighters feel (wrongly guilty ) because they couldn't get people out

He is going to be fucking crucified and this will come and haunt him . Mark my words

Shocking

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 19/06/2017 21:48

I think Paget is on damage limitation, all he's worried about is his own neck.

Grenfell Tower fire: Undocumented migrants could be unaccounted for because of immigration status

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/06/2017 22:02

The fire fighters risk their lives and he just covers his arse.

Rinoachicken · 19/06/2017 22:07

I was honestly expecting him to say "I really don't know what all the fuss is about, they're only peasents" - that attitude was so clearly leeching from every pore of his squirmy weasely body

If you read this link. Please look St the quoted comments from Nick Paget brown particularly re the cladding.

barrygibbscheekbones · 19/06/2017 22:13

Burn that article is very damning of the government- surely heads must roll?

The leader of the council should do the honourable thing and resign - government ministers have resigned for much less.

Rydon lands Grenfell Tower refurbishment
July 2016

Rydon has completed the refurbishment to Grenfell Tower for Kensington & Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO), upgrading the 24-storey 1970s building as part of a £67m borough-wide regeneration.

The £10m project included extensive remodelling of the bottom four floors creating nine additional new homes, improved communal facilities for the residents, and improved spaces for two local businesses. Externally, rain screen cladding, replacement windows and curtain wall façades have been fitted giving the building a fresher, modern look. All of the remodelling & refurbishment works were completed with residents still in occupation on the upper twenty floors.

Dale Youth Boxing Club, which has produced some of the UK’s best boxing talent including Olympic Gold medallist James DeGale and former European, British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves, is based within Grenfell Tower. The work has provided the club with improved facilit
ies that will hopefully produce many more champions of the future.

Grenfell Nursery was relocated to a larger and more convenient space on the ground floor next to a new outside play area.

Internally, a new, more efficient communal heating system and bespoke smoke extract and ventilation system were fitted. The works achieved a BREEAM Good rating and Rydon helped the client secure eco funding grants.

Cllr Nick Paget-Brown, the leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, visited the site in May and said:

“It is remarkable to see first-hand how the cladding has lifted the external appearance of the tower and how the improvements inside people’s homes will make a big difference to their day-to-day lives”

“As well as this investment, in a relatively short space of time Grenfell Tower residents have benefitted from a brand new academy and leisure centre, which represents our ongoing commitment to North Kensington.”

I've just seen footage of inside the tower and the extent of the damages caused.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 19/06/2017 22:20

The BBC article is on the front page of their website. I hope people read it.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 19/06/2017 22:24

After further correspondence, Liberal Democrat MP Steven Williams - who was then a minister in the department - replied: "Ihave neither seen nor heard anything that would suggest that consideration of these specific potential changes is urgent and I amnot willing to disrupt the work of this department by asking that these matters arebrought forward."

The group replied to say they "were at a loss to understand, how you had concluded that credible and independent evidence, which had life safety implications, was NOT considered to be urgent".

"As a consequence the group wishes to pointout to you that should a major fire tragedy, with loss of life, occur between now and 2017 in, for example, a residential care facility or a purpose built block of flats, where the matters which had been raised here, were found to be contributory to the outcome, then the group would be bound to bring this to others' attention."

BurnTheBlackSuit · 19/06/2017 22:27

That was from the BBC article. Letters sent by All-Party Parliamentary Fire Safety and Rescue Group to 4 mps: Steven Williams, Eric Pickles, James Wharton and Gavin Barwell warning the repeatedly of the dangers and the consequences of inaction.

soimpressed · 19/06/2017 22:30

I just watched the Panorama programme and I am sobbing. Such a terrible waste of life and that idiot Paget showed no shame.

thatdearoctopus · 19/06/2017 22:31

So, these letters/blogs refer to Grenfell being a fire hazard years ago until very recently. Were there risks specifically concerning that block, or do those concerns apply to other tower blocks? I mean, besides the obvious issue of the cladding? Those letters refer to a number of issues. What were the other concerns? I've heard of access routes being blocked by parked cars, for instance, but I would imagine that's an issue everywhere.

RhythmAndStealth · 19/06/2017 22:33

To underline Suit's link to the BBC article on how ministers have been repeatedly warned. The All-Party Parliamentary Safety Group have been warning ministers for years.

Here is Sir David Amess, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Fire Safety Group on Newsnight on 15 June

Elsewhere in the interview, he made it clear the Fire Safety Group's voice had gone unheard.

mrsglowglow · 19/06/2017 22:34

Burntheblacksuit those warnings and letters couldn't have been clearer about the dangers!! 4 MP's all ignored. All the way along people were just brushed aside. Even the experts.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 19/06/2017 22:37

The letters do not relate specifically to Grenfell. They refer to the recommendations following the Lakanal fire. And also mentioned the dangers of cladding in 2015.
