Are the management's offices not at a different location, Stats?

lobsterface · 18/06/2017 01:02

Someone asked why we want the death toll to rise. I absolutely don't. But I think the current number isn't true and I want the truth.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/06/2017 01:15

The KCTMO offices are elsewhere yes, I thought they were referring to the Grenfell specific office. According to the plans there was one in the tower itself on the ground floor which I'm sure I've seen was a tower office although it's also listed as a community office, but there's also another bunch which are just opposite the tower entrance (so probably still inaccessible given proximity). KCTMO lists a Lancaster West Estate Office as being near Grenfell.

But you're right, he probably meant the TMO, although maybe not - stuff related to fire safety checks, info about residents might well have been on site too. They probably need both. There's also a concierge office on the ground floor which again, might contain useful stuff.

Hope today's protest was effective and peaceful.

On a selfish note: I wish I could have gone to protest. Just as I wish I could have gone to the area on Wednesday to help. I feel so bloody useless. I keep crying as one terrible thing after another is uncovered, and yet what does that do? Precisely nothing. Ugh.

Those poor poor people. I'm so so sorry.

The eyes of the world are upon this.

Rhythm i hope its ok that i asked to move the threads. Thanks i thought it was important that they didnt disappear after 12 weeks.

RhythmAndStealth · 18/06/2017 05:01

It did occur to me they might be better in "In the News" now Helena.

Initially, I just started a thread in because I woke up in the middle of the night, couldn't sleep and turned on the TV. What I saw on the news channel shook me right to the core. I realised I was in effect watching people die by fire in their own homes and it broke my heart.

A couple of hours into watching it unfold I wanted to talk about it, DH was still asleep, so I posted in "Chat" because I thought that was the only place there'd be much traffic at that time in the morning.

Did realise that it's evolving into something else though, and "In the News" is now more appropriate. I thought it might be a bit up myself if I asked for it to be moved though, so I'm glad someone else did.

Thanks for making the request Flowers

Metropolitan Police Statement

RhythmAndStealth · 18/06/2017 05:19

Excerpts from an interview with Dany Cotton, Comissioner of the London Fire Brigade

“I did a dynamic risk assessment and we knew we were going to be doing things that were not following our normal procedures. Had we just followed standard fire brigade procedures, we would not have been able to commit firefighters in and conduct the rescues we did."

“The assessment I made was that there was saveable life in that building at that time, and it was our job to go in. It was very difficult, it made me feel physically sick, looking at the building and knowing I had a hundred-plus firefighters in the building at any one time.”

“In my first six months of doing this job, we’ve had two terrorist incidents and now this. And time and time again my staff step up and are immense in their response, and it just makes me so proud.”

I cannot express in words how much admiration I have for this woman and her firefighters, for all firefighters.

They are all just amazing.

There's a post on Facebook detailing one Firefighter's experiences in the early hours of Wednesday morning. It is not graphic in any way but I don't want to post it here in case it upsets anyone connected to the horrible events.

If you search for the page "Save the UK Fire Service" you should find it.

Theresa May's Grenfell Tower statement

Earlier today I met with victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy and the volunteers and community leaders who are working so hard to help people rebuild their lives.

I wanted to listen to their concerns and reassure them personally that government is there for them – and that everything possible will be done to help them through the hugely difficult days, weeks, months and years to come.

The response of the emergency services, NHS and the community has been heroic.

Grenfell Tower fire: May admits support for families ‘was not good enough’ – as it happened
Follow the latest updates from London as public anger over government response to the disaster mounts
Read more
But, frankly, the support on the ground for families who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough.

I have heard the concerns and I have ordered immediate action across the board to help victims’ relatives and the survivors.

People lost everything in the fire and were left in only the clothes they were wearing.

I can confirm that a £5m emergency fund that I announced yesterday is now being distributed on the ground so people can buy clothes, food and other essentials. If more funding is required, it will be provided.

Residents rightly want to know when new housing will be provided. I have fixed a deadline of three weeks for everybody affected to be found a home near by.

I have today requested daily progress reports.

There have been huge frustrations that people do not know who to talk to, that they can’t get through on the council hotlines.

I have ordered that more staff be deployed across the area, wearing high-visibility clothing, so they can easily be found, dispense advice and ensure the right support is provided. Phone lines will have more staff.

Victims have concerns their voice will not be heard, that their many questions about this tragedy will not be answered.

That is why I ordered a public inquiry, with the costs for providing victims with legal representation met by government.

The inquiry will be open and transparent. Government and ministers will cooperate fully. I anticipate the name of the judge will be announced within the next few days and that an open meeting will be held with residents to help shape the terms of reference.

It has been decided today that the public inquiry will report back to me personally. As prime minister, I will be responsible for implementing its findings.

Understandably, those living in similar high-rise blocks to Grenfell Tower also want answers.

I have ordered councils to complete urgent safety checks on all these buildings. If any further action is required, it will be taken.

After something this traumatic, many people will be in need of not just financial support, but also counselling. NHS London will provide that support.

I can also announce that NHS London will provide specialist long-term bereavement support for the families who have lost loved ones, and immediate psychological support is being provided by Cruse and the Red Cross.

If other issues become apparent – if the victims need more help and support – I will make sure it is forthcoming.

The fire at Grenfell Tower was an unimaginable tragedy for the community, and for our country. My government will do whatever it takes to help those affected, get justice and keep our people safe.

The fact some have to work a second job on their rest days is astounding. Very powerful piece all round.

Saucery · 18/06/2017 06:56

Love the implication that removing Legal Aid was a shitty idea - so shitty in fact that it has to be provided again now, in this specific set of circumstances Hmm

Criticism of cost cutting

"It has also emerged that in order to save money, the council ditched the original proposed contractor, Leadbitter, for the refurbishment, and instead went with Rydon, a cheaper bid for the work."

Link to Rachel Johnson's interview from LBC
www.lbc.co.uk/news/london/west/kensington-chelsea/grenfell-tower-fire/rachel-johnson-theresa-may-is-a-victim-of-grenfell/
It's shocking.
Bad enough that Rachel Johnson describes the PM as a victim of the fire when the PM is safely with all her possessions and family, her privacy and dignity intact, wonderfully housed (and always has been). The PM is unhurt, she is unbereaved.

It's so offensive to hear Rachel Johnson calmly pointing the finger at the fire brigade, after all their heroism over the last few days. And when Boris Johnson her brother as previous London Mayor cut back the fire service. LFB weren't responsible for signing off on safety at Grenfell tower, if that needs saying here again.

No one listened. It is so horrific.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 18/06/2017 09:10

I don't understand what goes through someones head to appear on radio and say stuff like that..She equates the preventable loss of life with the PM getting criticism. Theresa May will be ok, in a few years she will probably retire from politics with a pension and she will live her life surrounded by her loved ones.

mrsglowglow · 18/06/2017 09:14

Reports (unofficial) that at least 15 children from the grenfell nursery are not accounted for aged between 6 months and 4 years. I can't imagine what it must be like for the nursery, waiting for news.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 18/06/2017 09:16

However, Boris wants to be PM. RJ knows her comments will inflame the rage against TM and 'help' remove her from number 10 so her brother can get in. Don't think RJ and TM are necessarily on the same side...

BurnTheBlackSuit · 18/06/2017 09:21

"The Government has drafted in extra staff to manage the response to the Grenfell Tower fire after criticism of Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council.

A team of civil servants has been embedded in the council office after residents complained they had been left with little support or information from officials." BBC Live

I would also like to see the police in the offices removing/securing documents which relate to the crime scene/criminal investigation.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 18/06/2017 09:22

I've just see a video on twitter with a survivor from floor 17 who say's people are being pressured to move out of the area, I hope it's not true. But it really would't surprise me.
