No worries Sylvia*.

I have found so many helpful links through these threads. Thank you to everyone.

I was unaware of the local council's policy on public spending until reading it here. It is shocking. That letter to the Guardian about the resident 'giving back' the £200 council underspend 'rebate' is so sad.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/06/2017 22:51

Surveillance, if installed, should provide footage of exactly who was in the building and who wasn't. As far as I can tell, the reception area is more or less intact. And that means any cameras.

Please please let the surveillance have been installed.

Theresa May fights for her political life: Beleaguered PM's 'mea culpa' after disastrous response to Grenfell tower block tragedy as she faces Cabinet split over Brexit

Subheadline
Poll finds that 69 per cent of voters favour a soft exit from the European Union

This.Is.The.Mail.

Poll by Survation. The one who were closest to the election result.

Brexit-supporting MPs say they fear Mrs May’s political weakness is allowing Chancellor Philip Hammond to swing the Government’s position round to a ‘soft’ Brexit in which the UK would remain in the customs union.

However, a Survation poll for this newspaper found that more than two thirds of voters – 69 per cent – support Mr Hammond’s soft Brexit approach. There is also strong opposition to Mrs May’s declaration that ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’, with 65 per cent calling for the UK to leave the EU with some form of agreement in place. And there is now a majority in favour of holding a second referendum to approve the Brexit deal.

Sorry wrong thread...

Statement from the council From the BBC live news thread:

I am heartbroken by the tragic fire and the appalling loss of life at Grenfell Tower. This is a terrible and shocking event and my heart goes out to the victims, their families and friends and to the residents and wider community that have been affected. I have been over-awed by the strength, compassion and resolve of the residents and community in coming together to help the survivors and the friends and family of the victims. The emergency services, hospital staff, charities, and our own specialist teams have been working tirelessly to try and help all those affected. Kensington and Chelsea council is working closely with the government, charities, volunteer and resident groups and the emergency services to help re-house and assist all those affected. Of course, people rightly have questions about the causes of the fire and why it spread so quickly and these will be answered. Lessons must be learned from the Grenfell Tower fire and the government has launched a full public inquiry. I will cooperate in full with this and all other investigations. I feel deep sorrow for all those affected and will do everything I can do to help them repair and rebuild their lives."
Nicholas Paget-Brown
Leader, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

The missing 12 year old Jessica poster was up at Liverpool Street earlier and it hit me walking past it. It made it feel real.

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 23:11

I really hope those surveillance cameras were put in. If the reception area survived the fire the film should be intact.

In the last hour the Home Office has said they have arranged for the family of the first of the deceased to be identified, to be flown over from Syria.

HandbagKrabby · 17/06/2017 23:15

That council statement says fuck all about what they're actually doing.

Comparing it to Manchester and the recent attack is like chalk and cheese. There was a disaster plan that swung into action immediately, with a large facility where families could go to get information. There were police and helpers everywhere. The information was clear and not contradictory. I cannot see how Kensington and Chelsea has a disaster plan based on how they've responded.

11122aa · 17/06/2017 23:19

Minute silence Monday at 11 for the victims. I am a bit surprised its not two minutes.

gluteustothemaximus · 17/06/2017 23:22

Did anyone hear Boris Johnson's sister on LBC Radio?

Saying TM was getting a very hard time, and didn't deserve it, and how TM didn't sign off on the building, therefore it wasn't her fault. Goes onto say, the Fire Brigade signed it off, they signed off the access, they signed off the cladding.

She even said TM is one of the victims of the fire as well

Fucking hell.

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 23:29

"She even said TM is one of the victims of the fire as well"

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The parrallels between this and Hillsborough are becoming even more stark.

Kelvin McKenzie tried to claim he was just as much a victim after the findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel came out.

I know TM hasnt claimed to be a victim herself but still.........

CoolCarrie · 17/06/2017 23:37

Johnson's sister is a nasty bitch, can't stand her

CoolCarrie · 17/06/2017 23:38

2 minutes is for the fallen of the world wars and conflicts, not for civilians.

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 23:39

But the residents complained about the power surges the refurb etc time and time again.

What RJ is doing smacks of gaslighting to me.

i am very sorry for the use of that word in the circumstances but there is no better word to describe it.

THIS is part of the reason why i suggested for the threads to be moved . If they go pffft (though obvs there are other parts of the internet covering this) it gives more oppurtunity for the rewriting of history.

But the difference with MN when compared to the newspaper websites is that all walks of life post here from tenants to people who work on the front line of HAs to those higher up the economic scale who DO care. So you get a discussion with perspectives and suggestions coming from every angle.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 17/06/2017 23:48

Johnson sister
Lives locally

I sincerely hope she discussed the people
In her community rather than politics

Hmm
Ciaovenora · 17/06/2017 23:49

The reason any Govt wants an inquiry as opposed to an inquest comes down to the facts the Govt, (A) wants to drive the narrative and (B) control who's appointed and what they report, they loose both if they have an inquest.

BertieBotts · 17/06/2017 23:50

The fire brigade didn't "sign off". Because they're not required to do that any more. Fire officers can "make recommendations". Which I thought that they did, and they weren't followed.

WTF?

RedToothBrush · 17/06/2017 23:52

Ben Goldacre @ Bengoldacre
One thing conspicuously missing: TV footage of police carrying boxes of documents and computers out of Grenfell's management offices...
That's not to say I'm prejudging their culpability in any way. But dozens of people are dead, there is extensive public concern that...
... Shortcuts were taken. Police locking down the documents would prevent any tampering, but also send a clear message that this is all..
... Being taken seriously. Because right now the opposite is the case, and that way riots lie. It would also make staff blood run cold..
... And that is no bad thing, to exploit personal anxiety to make people in bureaucratic roles take the impact of their choices seriously.
I apologise for going on about this, but I am truly staggered by the lack of competent response to Grenfell, inadequate immediate support..
.. For victims, a PM so afraid to meet the public that there is no public reassurance, and a fair impression that accountability is lacking
Raiding offices and taking copies of documents does not presume guilt, it's public diplomacy, public reassurance, and a wise precaution. End.

Revealed: the tower block fire warnings that ministers ignored

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 23:53

Yes thats right Bertie. That was changed Either RJ has got her facts wrong or they are trying to drive the narrative already?

BertieBotts · 17/06/2017 23:58

I'm guessing she's just got them wrong but that's still a blindingly stupid thing not to fact check before you spout it to the whole country.

HelenaDove · 18/06/2017 00:00

From the article Red linked.

re. "They always seem to need a significant loss of life before things are changed"

Yes. Safety organisations dont seem to want to do anything until something happens. Which is also what i was told re, LG

gluteustothemaximus · 18/06/2017 00:00

I would say gaslighting already, and trying to drive the narrative.

I had to listen to the interview about 5 times, just to make sure I'd heard correctly, as I didn't think anyone could make such statements after something so awful.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/06/2017 00:03

Redtoothbrush the police commander suggested in the conference today that he hasn't actually been in the tower yet - he discussed seeing video and said he would be going in because he wanted to see the reality for himself.

Given that I don't think the police will have been going in to remove paperwork be side it's presumably not been safe enough.

It's important to get answers but not to risk more lives in the process. I'm sure they'll get the docs out when it's safe to do so.

HelenaDove · 18/06/2017 00:19

RJ is getting plenty of vitriol on Twitter for her stupid ill informed comments . And blaming the fire service for something that was taken out of control. The same fire service that was cut by that brother of hers while maintaining his buffoon facade.

eynesbury · 18/06/2017 00:23

2 minutes is for 2 world wars

Manchester was 1 minute

Grenfell will be one minute

Not sure why you want 2?
