The thought of anyone "illegal" being scared to let authorities know they were safe hadn't even occurred to me

But worse is the number of illegals there could have been in that building that no one knows to search for or identify because, officially, they don't exist. Sad

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 18:19

Is this a reliable source (figures for the 14th)? It puts the number affected as 650.

Don't know if anyone has already posted this but this is the bbc on the lack of response from Kensington council following a major incident www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40312564

It reminds me slightly of New Orleans Sad

StatisticallyChallenged · 17/06/2017 18:25

Would that 650 not include the people in the surrounding housing - many of whom were evacuated afaik?

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 18:35

Im sorry you went through all that Albadross. Thanks

A letter printed in The Guardian

OublietteBravo · 17/06/2017 18:40

How high is the death toll? The simple answer is too high.

This would've been the answer if it had stayed at the 6 deaths initially reported.

When the total went up to 12, and then to 17, it was still the answer.

Today, with a presumed death toll of 58, the answer remains unchanged.

Too many people died.

I'm starting to wonder if people actually want the death toll to be higher.

It's a terrible tragedy that shouldn't have happened. Are you suddenly going to care more if the death toll reaches the figure of 70 the BBC are estimating? Or if (heaven forbid) it reaches triple figures?

I'm not at all saying that the true magnitude of this disaster should be in any way hidden. But I don't think it will be. In the meantime, I think the appropriate authorities need to be given the time and space to conduct their investigation. Even if this means the final death toll isn't apparent immediately.

mrsglowglow · 17/06/2017 18:42

Albadross, so heartfelt and genuine. What a nightmare. Hugs to you xx

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 18:42

I have reported my own post of 18.20 as i should not have asked that on the thread.

Aplologies to Albadross.

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 18:45

It's more the other way around Bravo, I'd like them to confirm how many residents are known to have definitely survived.

Jux · 17/06/2017 18:47

I cannot believe the incompetence of the official response to this disaster.

Still no one officially coordinating aid, money distribution. No evidence of Council members being there. Distribution of essentials being coordinated by volunteers. While the community reaponse to this has been amazing, the uselessness of May's silly little efforts is incredible.

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 18:50

That letter is amazing Albadross.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/06/2017 18:53

Bravo. No one wants it to be higher, but the lack of information, the figures not adding up etc makes people suspicious. People have no faith that anyone has any records about who lived there and who got out ok.

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 18:53

An ex employee of the tenant organisation on Channel 4 news stating about the problems of contracting and sub contracting and sub contracting etc etc and how it means no accountability passing the buck and not taking responsibility. Stuff i and others have been stating for YEARS.

She was told by her ex employer that these partnerships HAD to work.

Money money money!

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 18:54

Yes that letter is beautifully written and from the heart.

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 18:57

YY Burn Tenants are often seen by these bodies as a nuisance.

And tenants are seen as a group of people who need to be kept in line.

Yesterdays hand delivered letters are an example of this attitude.

No wonder the trust in authorities and authority figures has completely gone.

Albadross · 17/06/2017 19:30

Helena I didn't see what you said but if you were asking me something feel free to ask on the thread

Albadross · 17/06/2017 19:32

Feels pretty impotent right now, but thank you for reading.

HandbagKrabby · 17/06/2017 19:35

Albadross that's a lovely post on your blog. I am so sorry that you were treated that way.

I truly hope that the people of Grenfell get their justice and resources to rebuild their homes and lives but the response so far does not suggest that will happen.

Kensington council chiefs need to all be sacked and replaced immediately. Their response could not have been more lacking.

The buildings reg thing is that accurate about the cladding? I'm surprised that's only come to light now from the Dept of Local Gov.

Albadross · 17/06/2017 19:47

What happens to people when they get jobs where their decisions impact the lives of others? Is it that they don't make the human connection?

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/06/2017 19:57

From this thread on the telegraph the other day, I counted 72 missing. Obviously some of this have been confirmed one way or the other since then. This is only the list complied by the newspaper using poster and SM I assume. It includes a lot of flat numbers and floors. I'm not saying it's accurate in anyway, but it's a starting point. It also contains details of someone having got out from 24th floor, if I read it correctly:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/grenfell-tower-fire-fatalities-missing-people/

Tiredemma · 17/06/2017 20:00

There was a traumatised bloke on the news last night. He said that on the night of the fire he observed all that occurred from his own property ( tragic stories of kids in windows etc). He then said that not last night but night before he saw lots of bodies being removed after dark. It was on channel 4 news. It was glossed over but I remember thinking that it meant something that bodies were being brought out under darkness.

I do not believe that only 58 have lost their lives. Not at all

HelenaDove · 17/06/2017 20:01

I think we should keep on using the Chat board to discuss this but as each thread reaches 1000 messages and closes is there a way MN can file them somewhere so they dont disappear in 12 weeks time?

Obvs its not just up to me but after the comments ive seen on an AIBU thread i wouldnt particularly want the discussions we are having here moved across to there but MN Classics doesnt seem the right place either.

But nor do i think these Grenfell threads in Chat should disappear. Is there a way around this? Could each thread be moved from Chat AFTER its reached 1000 posts and closed?

Saucery · 17/06/2017 20:03

In THe News maybe?
