They were outside but now the crowds have all entered the civic centre town hall

I am not surprised that this is happening

The trolls on this thread have not an ounce of decency.
Makes me feel sick.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/06/2017 17:42

One of the 'mob' was saying they want organisation, they want officials to coordinate, so that they don't have to go from hospital to hospital trying to find out where their loved ones are.

No wonder they are angry, an untold number of people are missing, there seems to be little in the way of coordination, they can't find their friends or family and they are learning that this came about because of a multitude of failures.

I really hope and pray that things calm down, both from their point of view - riots will traumatise them further and play into the hands of parts of the press, and from the point of the view of the police and emergency services who are also traumatised, exhausted and lacking in numbers.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/06/2017 17:42

'Rent a mob' is just a nasty phrase to stop people exercising their legal rights to demonstrate when their rights are being infringed

Their faces are covered so they are harder to identify - sometimes for good reason

One of my colleagues who is disabled was kettled exercising his legal right to demonstrate. He was threatened by the police that he would be tipped out his wheelchair.

None of this shit is black and white

TheAntiBoop · 16/06/2017 17:42

Robert Atkins was telling the council to 'get a grip '

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2017 17:42

I saw a statement by the council that it will "try" to rehouse as many people as possible.
Are they just not getting it?

Saucery · 16/06/2017 17:43

The Council have kept such a low profile, it's astounding.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/06/2017 17:44

Poor people. An emergency £5m fund is now available. It is a travesty it wasn't spent on a sprinkler system and better cladding. I really hope lessons will be learnt.

sparechange · 16/06/2017 17:44

Are you saying the victims should hobble out of hospital so that this protest is seen as genuine and people's voice heard?

No, I'm saying it is patently false to suggest that all the protesters at the town hall are victims, and that it is a spontaneous outpouring of their frustrations

It is a despicable attempt at political point scoring and an attempt to use emotions running high to incite civil unrest

CremeFresh · 16/06/2017 17:44

If the police and fire brigade were suddenly able to give an accurate figure on how many died , this will now only make things worse because everyone will now only say 'We knew it' .

WorshipTheGourd · 16/06/2017 17:46

I can absolutely see that the emergency services cannot give figures/ details of who has died yet. It may take weeks. It is painstaking work to do accurately. Heartbreaking for those waiting.

But I do NOT see why they cant give figures as to who actually lived there / numbers, if they were asked at 3.30? Surely those details have been passed to the emergency services anyway?

And, yes, if any workers, council or not, need to go past 5pm then I think, morally, they should do so.

This could very easily turn into riots. Helping no one. Person upthread who said racists will then turn on 'forrin' mob' was right Sad

But, anyone can understand the anger and frustration. Surely?

Mind, I spoke to a 'friend' last night whose comments about the community were so appalling I no longer consider him a friend (about their 'failure to help themselves' and 'lack of impetus in rescuing themselves'. I was genuinely horrified that someone could be so lacking in human compassion. But, it happens.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/06/2017 17:46

All day today I've been seeing pleas from locals asking for the council to coordinate help, rather than relying on volunteers who were doing their best, but really struggling without a centralised effort.

There needs to be civil unrest over this. Burnt to death in an unfit building, fuck yes, people are going to be angry!

LaurieFairyCake · 16/06/2017 17:48

We are such a divided nation right now. Leave and Remain. The gap between rich and poor greater that at any point ever in a democracy. A government which barely has the popular vote and is heavily criticised.

Honestly it's a wonder there hasn't been riots for a few years. We are tremendously law abiding when you consider the shit being done to poor people in this country.

Eventually Draylon.

herethereandeverywhere · 16/06/2017 17:48

We need to have faith in the authorities not fight against them

As someone who had family members at Hillsborough I will say from personal experience that this is a thoroughly shit idea.

Listen obediently to the powers that be? Let them tell you the way that it is? Watch the prime minister visit the scene surrounded by 'officials' and avoiding affected families?

It took 27 years and counting to get justice for the 96, there is NO WAY 'the authorities' can be trusted to treat these people properly. The othering of certain poor/working class sections of society is not a new phenomenon.

If I still lived in London I'd be down there with them. 'The authorities' have brought this on themselves and they'd better start listening and acting fast in an effective, transparent and fair way.

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2017 17:49

Exactly how I feel saucery. And it's not like no one predicted it. Sounds like the residents were very proactive but were banging their heads on a brick wall. No one listened to them and they died.

People are so compliant Sad

They stayed in their flats as they were told that the fire doors would protect them and that they would be rescued

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 16/06/2017 17:50

@Saucery

Violence is never an answer. I understand the anger and the demand for answers, I truly do. But a lot of those answers do not exist just yet. Destroying more lives is not a solution. And not a good way to repay the emergencies who have spent the whole week (and every week before) putting their lives at risk to save others.

Plumbhead · 16/06/2017 17:51

We pay our politicians and the community affected and victims themselves pay council tax so that th council do their job.

They are not doing ether job.

"No, I'm saying it is patently false to suggest that all the protesters at the town hall are victims, and that it is a spontaneous outpouring of their frustrations It is a despicable attempt at political point scoring and an attempt to use emotions running high to incite civil unrest"

You can think what you want it really doesn't matter.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 16/06/2017 17:51

*emergency services
I meant!

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2017 17:51

Does civil unrest mean violence?
If it does I agree it's not the answer. But unrest as in an unwillingness to accept the authority response, to be active about what is needed rather than passive, to effect change, that is definitely needed.

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2017 17:52

Are people seriously telling me the council phones will be unmanned this weekend?
