They were outside but now the crowds have all entered the civic centre town hall

I am not surprised that this is happening

The smugness and complacency simply oozes from your posts macarena

CivQueen · 16/06/2017 17:11

People are making this into a much bigger class struggle, rich vs poor thing and people like Lily Allen are not helping to calm the situation

But that is exactly what it is, why can't you and other see that?

Do you think those people would have died if they had been richer?

Do you think they would have been ignored and left in a death trap if they had power and influence?

fuzzywuzzy · 16/06/2017 17:11

I don't blame them to be honest.

What are they meant to do wait around for afew years homeless hoping the council will rehome them?

They shouldn't be sleeping on make shift beds in community centres churches and mosques for the foreseeable future.

They need to kick up a fuss as the government would like them to quietly disappear whilst they do a massive arse covering exercise.

They aren't doing anything we wouldn't on their position.

whattodowiththepoo · 16/06/2017 17:11

We need to have faith in the authorities not fight against them.
If we don't have answers in the future or we feel people have avoided responsibility then we should demand action.
But for now anger doesn't help anyone.

Highalert · 16/06/2017 17:12

People are not making it out to be about class struggle, It is about class struggle and no one sitting in their nice house in MC land has a fucking right to say otherwise.

TheAntiBoop · 16/06/2017 17:12

This is reminding me of when princess Diana died - everyone was whipped up into a frenzy and had all these expectations about how people should be behaving and how it should all be in the public eye

I should imagine the housing department are working like mad to try and find places for the homeless victims

People have a right to be angry but the worst thing is to end up with wrong information out there. Eg the flat the fire started in - if you read some of the press it makes out the guy packed all his stuff up and ambled out in a careless manner. Until they have the facts the media are very irresponsible to report damaging facts and actually make it much harder for the real people responsible to have to take the responsibility as people remember what they heard in the early days and not the facts that come out from investigations

explodingkittens · 16/06/2017 17:13

'Faith in the authorities' is what they had. And now they're dead.

I can't believe what I'm reading tbh.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/06/2017 17:13

Not when 'public action' is getting in the way of council/other organisations trying to help the people who were actually directly affected.

What does 'public action' even mean? What useful thing does it do? Every single person affected by the Grenfell Tower disaster is aware that the public is horrified and upset for them, that monies are being raised across the country for them. The whole country is behind them and wanting to help. That officials (who can actually help) are being drafted in out of hours to do their utmost.

But still, the banner-waving, baying public must have their moment, must be appeased. That is urgent...

Highalert · 16/06/2017 17:14

They are angry. What do you expect them to do?

Sit in the church hall with a cup of tea and a bag of donated clothes? and say never mind.

TestTubeTeen · 16/06/2017 17:14

The blaming the police thing has been a constant on MN since Manchester.

No one even knows for sure who was actually inside the block when the fire started (though obviously many families DO know who was with them).

The family whose children were (thankfully ) found alive: they were found in the first day.

Someone was pulled from the block alive at noon on the day after the fire started. They were still looking for survivors.

What can the police say? If you have no news then it means the worst. That is the truth.

But how can people be expected to not express anger that the fire happened in the way it did? And use that anger to fuel a push for questions to be asked and answered?

sparechange · 16/06/2017 17:15

I completely disagree. They are calm measured posts compared to those who seem hellbent on willing this to turn into a riot. You included.

JaniceBattersby · 16/06/2017 17:15

So first 'the media' are accused of keeping quiet over the numbers of dead. Then they're accused of stoking things up to incite a riot. They're dong their job. They're there, reporting on what's happening, giving marginalised people very public voice. If they weren't there, they'd be accused of ignoring these people because they're poor.

The media is not responsible for everything bad that happens

MacarenaFerreiro · 16/06/2017 17:15

Smug? Hardly.

These people are demanding answers which the Council are not in a position to provide. How are they supposed to give casualty figures when the Fire Brigade hasn't gone through the whole building?? It's almost as if they think it's some huge conspiracy and cover up where hte Council are choosing not to release information. Or as if there's been a lengthy investigation already and they're covering that up too. The Council are not going to give ANY answers until they are sure of what's happened, and in any case, it's not the COuncil who are going through the flats looking for bodies.

I do think though that forming a mob and marching on the Council is plain wrong. The situation appears to have calmed now but could have turned very nasty which won't solve anything.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/06/2017 17:17

I very much hope - probably in vain but I'm doing it anyway - that the Council won't just lock the doors and go home for the weekend soon

PPs are right that there's no excuse for violence and I also wonder why unaffected people like the ludicrous Lily Allen are so intent on interfering at this stage, but when folk are so desperate it really doesn't seem to be a time for clockwatching

ALemonyPea · 16/06/2017 17:17

What would I expect the council to do at 5 to 5 on a Friday afternoon? I'd expect them to actually work past their hours and make sure that those affected have some hope of a roof over their heads by the weekend, not for them to clock off and go home for the weekend.

I am not surprised they are entering it, they have nowhere else to go!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/06/2017 17:18

exploding kittens, oh... what is it that you're doing differently? What help and support are you actually providing yourself?

Everybody here is ranting on a chatboard. It's understandable that people are upset about this, it's horrendous, but there's nothing to be gained from shouting at other people posting. People are processing this and for as many people who are railing against the local authorities involved, there are others who know from their own experiences what it's like to go through a disaster in the community. Aberfan? It's a time for the community and wider communities to pull together and help. Not this.

Lemony that''s not what the mob is demanding. They are demanding "justice" and "answers" and not talking about practical matters like emergency housing. It would be interesting to see how many people who pitched up at the town hall were former residents of the block or who have family members directly affected.

Slimthistime · 16/06/2017 17:19

Macarena "People aren't at the Council asking about practicalities about housing and money, "

Yes they ARE. a councillor earlier said it might take two years to regousebthem.

What the fuck are you watching?! And five to five?! The mind boggles.

explodingkittens · 16/06/2017 17:19

I see devastated people whose lives have been destroyed overnight.

You see a mob.

Well, there we go, I guess.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 16/06/2017 17:22

The 'devastated people' who were affected are not the mob and they are being helped - or do you know any different?

Any mob is being incited by people very like the ones here. Impotent and useless. A mob isn't going to get it done. This isn't and shouldn't be - a quick fix.

Maudlinmaud · 16/06/2017 17:23

God help them. Their anger and frustration is understandable and palpable.

Theresnonamesleft · 16/06/2017 17:23

They aren't asking for figures of casualties.
They want to know how many people were living in the block.

They want the council to give immediate help and support.

The council were asked before 3:30 for this.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/06/2017 17:25

The company who fitted the panels were asked to put up the cheaper NON fire retardant ones according to the BBC

Clearly the 10 million was either not enough or was misspent
