Seventeen tragic deaths confirmed so far, six victims provisionally identified. Flowers
Number of those who perished feared to rise into triple figures as search proceeds Flowers
Search for remaining victims expected to take weeks, sadly it’s considered unlikely that it will be possible to identify all the victims Flowers
Names of those still missing start to emerge Flowers
Nearly 80 victims being treated across six hospitals, with 15 still in critical care Flowers
Hundreds of people displaced and dispossessed, concerned about when and where they will be rehoused Flowers

Public inquiry ordered.
Criminal investigation launched.
Serious questions being asked about fire safety regulations, management of social housing, austerity and inequality.
Fire Brigade search of building expected to take weeks due to complexity of building, extent of fire damage and the necessity of undertaking a painstaking fingertip search.

“There must be arrests after this monstrous crime” David Lammy MP

‘Families rehoused last night been left clueless about where to spend next nights. No word from #kccouncil. Chaos.” Emily Maitlis, BBC

“We have to act as if it was our friends, our family in that block” Nick Hurd MP, Policing and Fire Minister

“Someone needs to be held accountable. These deaths could have been prevented.” Local resident to Sadiq Khan

I agree with the comparisons with Hillsborough.

Rhythm i totally agree. Those letters were hand delivered today?

I really dont think its the left wingers who are trying to incite here!!

Those letters seem like an underhand tactic to me.

The Last Leg is on live tonight at 9pm Its a special Re United Kingdom edition. Its a year ago today that Jo Cox was murdered.
But i think they cant NOT mention this.

mrsglowglow · 16/06/2017 20:32

This:

MonkeylovesRobotq

There are plenty of options between riot (or protest at night that's likely to turn into a riot) and "shut up and put up".

MonkeylovesRobot · 16/06/2017 20:34

mrsglowglow No where did I say they had made a choice to do it at night; I am fully aware it's been ongoing for a while... Please don't make accusations about people alluding to things when they haven't.

RhythmAndStealth · 16/06/2017 20:34

Agree Norma. Someone on the BBC mentioned that this needs to be a long-term, co-ordinated campaign like the Hillsborough campaign. That doesn't stop until the truth is revealed, changes are made, prosecutions happen.

Hand delivered today Helena.

I agree with redtoothbrush and it is disgusting that not all children are treated equally. I think this fire is the final straw and society has to change. I am ashamed of TM who "represents" us as our leader. I am ashamed of everyone connected with the refurb of the tower block. I am ashamed at the lack of dignity for people who are not white and middle class. I am ashamed and dismayed. No other words.

RhythmAndStealth · 16/06/2017 20:38

I can't think of a word for that timing Helena.

Disgusting. Disgraceful. Shocking. Sickening. Appalling. Inhuman.

No, none of those words go far enough.

I do think there is a big shift in how for example the BBC are reporting this. They are very much linking the fire to long term factors like -inequality, people's voices being silenced.

The BBC are being good. They are trying to give a platform as much as possible just for relatives to TALK and EXPLAIN without being leading.

They are trying to explain why its taking a long time and are trying to stress certain things in certain ways.

Its responsible reporting which is very much needed under the circumstances.

They have been critical of May's response and asked her outright about it.

They haven't been perfect but their coverage is a million times better than some of the sensationalist crap I saw from them a couple of weeks ago.

HelenaDove · 16/06/2017 20:42

I just looked at the #justiceforGrenfell hashtag on twitter.

Some awful comments about tenants on there. There is plenty of incitement coming from that quarter!

HandbagKrabby · 16/06/2017 20:42

I was hoping someone who knew more about the media would say something different to my suspicions. It's so bleak. Who the fuck sits there and says 'oh this wonderful child is too poor and black to lead this story with'. Perhaps mumsnet posters could do something to ensure the children are properly represented with dignity and respect in the media.

mrsglowglow · 16/06/2017 20:42

I'm not getting into a spat with you over this monkey. I read it that you were saying protesting at night is as good as expecting a riot. I just wanted to say not everyone protesting at night wants that. I'm sorry if I misunderstood your sentiment.

HelenaDove · 16/06/2017 20:43

I meant there is plenty of incitement coming from the right wing quarter.

StatisticallyChallenged · 16/06/2017 20:43

I've been quite impressed with how upfront the news have been on calling out poverty as a factor in this too. It's...surprising, given a lot of the tone we've seen in the last few years.

MonkeylovesRobot · 16/06/2017 20:43

When we talk about global child inequality I feel, and I have felt for a long time, that people are very often ignorant to the inequalities within our own communities. I also don't think people appreciate the long-lasting detrimental effects of inequality.

MonkeylovesRobot · 16/06/2017 20:44

Helena - do you have a blog?

brexitstolemyfuture · 16/06/2017 20:47

Really well put Wellysocksbox

For too long the media will only make something a story if it's a pretty white blonde girl Angry

Is austerity really to blame for this? I imagine corporate greed would do maintenance jobs as cheap as possible austerity or not.

Who on earth ever allowed such a material to be legally allowed to be added to buildings?

Livingtothefull · 16/06/2017 20:47

I don't quite know what's going on at the moment, it is surreal. I can't believe Boris Johnson has the unmitigated gall to accuse opponents of 'politicking' and brag about his record for fire safety whilst Mayor:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/06/16/boris-johnson-accuses-labour-outrageous-politicking-grenfell/

Which is contradicted by what the firefighters themselves claim:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/15/cuts-fire-service-putting-lives-at-risk

A Tory council leader tries to put the blame for this devastating tragedy on the residents themselves:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/shameless-tory-council-leader-blames-10631544

Are they just emotionally tone deaf or are they purposefully trying to provoke us and exacerbate peoples anger?

EmilyBiscuit · 16/06/2017 20:51

brexit, that is very complicated. Cladding is considered as part of building regulations. There will be a number of people involved in the decision to allow this particular cladding in this particular building.

brexitstolemyfuture · 16/06/2017 20:55

Understood EmilyBiscuit but the fact that this cladding bursts into flames once it reaches 700 c means it's totally unsuitable. I've no idea if the reports are true about it being banned in other countries but it really does begger beleif in this day and age where you would assume all modifications was really really strict.

PollytheDolly · 16/06/2017 20:59

That's what I said earlier. It's beyond me.

There are many to blame, going back years. From the current government, councils, mayors, building control, the previous works done and not done, etc, etc all the way back to the person apparently qualified to design that crap cladding system and it getting the ok from other qualified persons to be used.....

Mistake upon mistake upon mistake and those with deaf ears.

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2017 20:59

Perhaps mumsnet posters could do something to ensure the children are properly represented with dignity and respect in the media.

You could ask but I doubt it would change much. The likes of the Daily Mail think they are representing a certain market and will continue to do so. Because it sells newspapers.

That's why she The Attention Seeker of the Apprentice who I refuse to name, has forged herself a career out of the same thing.

I wish I could tell you differently.

In an era of declining print sales, The Mail is struggling for relevance and revenue and is chasing money in any way it can. The results are not pretty.

HelenaDove · 16/06/2017 21:01

Monkey unfortunately no i dont. I tried to start one a few years ago but im not tech savvy enough Blush
