Number of those who perished feared to rise into triple figures as search proceeds Flowers

Names of those still missing start to emerge Flowers
Nearly 80 victims being treated across six hospitals, with 15 still in critical care Flowers
Hundreds of people displaced and dispossessed, concerned about when and where they will be rehoused Flowers

Serious questions being asked about fire safety regulations, management of social housing, austerity and inequality.
Fire Brigade search of building expected to take weeks due to complexity of building, extent of fire damage and the necessity of undertaking a painstaking fingertip search.

Oh God. The photos of the missing now on sky is heartbreaking. So many babies.

SylviaPoe · 16/06/2017 15:44

Emily, I don't think you've hijacked the thread.

Earlier the thread was covering a whole load of stuff about building materials, because it's only by understanding that people can understand how it happened.

Similarly, it's only by understanding who is responsible for fire safety checks that we can understand how this happened.

EmilyBiscuit · 16/06/2017 15:47

Inspection and enforcement is done by the fire service, but it remains the responsibility of the "responsible person" to ensure the requirements of the FSO are met.

Any obvious deficiencies (such as combustibles in the stairwell, blocked emergency access) should be picked up by the fire risk assessment. Provided they are not moved in advance of the risk assessment. Which is (I imagine) why the person in control of the building cannot simply delegate responsibility in this area.

With regards to the boilers in corridors etc, it really would depend on the specifics so I can't really comment as I haven't seen the fire strategy for the building. It may well come under both the FSO and building regs.

SylviaPoe · 16/06/2017 15:51

Thanks.

brexitstolemyfuture · 16/06/2017 15:54

Thanks for explaining about the equipment , it sounds like that wouldn't have made much difference espically looking at it on Google maps and seeing how difficult the access is.

I still think in this day and age there must have been a way to evacuate the people stuck at the top. The helopopers could have done more rather than just filming people with no hope Angry

Nowwhatsthis · 16/06/2017 15:57

It sure if this has been shared here already but if not I thought I'd post it, to spread the word.

A company is offering flats to the residents.

That is lovely Now, there are some good people out there in the world.

Shame the disgrace of a PM/government can't sort it out that quickly.

user1496484020 · 16/06/2017 16:04

Have to say the poor firefighters worked their asses off bless them. One was wearing his fitbit and covered 10k up and down stairs. A former firefighter went on to say, he was not only covering that ground, he was in smoke where you couldn't see your hand infront of you, carrying equipment and then people. Troopers they are.

brexitstolemyfuture · 16/06/2017 16:10

Are those flats offered in Newcastle?

RhythmAndStealth · 16/06/2017 16:13

Update based on BBC figures

*At least 30 people confirmed dead
*Up to 76 people still missing
*24 people remain in hospital, 12 in critical care

That's right (Well Tyneside which is in the same area) brexit

I imagine some may want to get as far away from London as possible but I suspect many would prefer to stay locally with school places, jobs, friends and support networks.

SylviaPoe · 16/06/2017 16:17

Yes, Brexit.

The residents need to be rehomed in the local area, with agreement that in the long term they will be rehomed in social housing in the local area.

RhythmAndStealth · 16/06/2017 16:20

From the Guardian

Authorities already under fire for their insensitivity have rubbed salt into the wounds of residents near Grenfell Tower by hand-delivering them letters today about antisocial behaviour (the warning relates to ball games played in the courtyard), ITV’s Paul Brand tweets. The letter, from the tower’s management company KCTMO, is dated Wednesday, the day of the fire. (Haroon Siddique)

Paul Brand@PaulBrandITV
Incredibly, people in flats opposite #Grenfell today received letter warning them about anti-social behaviour, threatening legal action.

Yes I can imagine that most people want/need to stay in their local area (I would!)

That said, a company with properties in Tyneside can only offer properties in Tyneside, and I think it's an incredible gesture. Who knows, there might even be someone who wants/is able to take them up on it. Better for them to ask than to just assume that it wouldn't be of any use to anyone.

user1496484020 · 16/06/2017 16:21

Has anyone from the Tenancy Management Organisation made a statement?

RhythmAndStealth · 16/06/2017 16:21

rhythm I saw that earlier and was gobsmacked.

Not to mention all the apologists saying that it was probably already "in the system" blah blah and couldn't be stopped 🙄

As someone on Twitter said, the problem of children playing ball games around the building appears to no longer be an issue. Sad

HemanOrSheRa · 16/06/2017 16:23

Residents are protesting at K&C townhall. Don't blame them. I mentioned on thread twould yesterday morning - I've been shocked by what appeared to be the lack of presence by the council.

user1496484020 · 16/06/2017 16:24

Rhythm and Stealth - My God - what absolute cunts. FFS.

HemanOrSheRa · 16/06/2017 16:26

*Thread two.

chumpchange · 16/06/2017 16:26

I'm going to take a media break I think. This evidence of callousness is really getting too much for me, and I'm in the privileged position of being able to 'switch off' from it as it were. My getting overwhelmed by it (as a random uninvolved person) isn't going to help anyone so I think I'd better take a step back from the news for a day or two.

I am so, so angry and upset.

I feel the same chump. Utterly helpless.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/06/2017 16:29

"The sooner she's gone the better."
People had their chance to vote her out last week, but never took it.
Too late in the day to be moaning now. That ships well and truly sailed
I'm afraid we're stuck with her now.

BarchesterFlowers · 16/06/2017 16:30

The Council are a disgrace.

They should be making a statement now, this morning in fact, about how all available officers have been made available to find alternative accommodation for those displaced today and over the weekend and I mean houses, houses for people to live in for 12 months if necessary so that they can start rebuilding their shattered lives.

They should be renting housing from whoever they can rent it from in the local borough, assessing/reviewing it and matching it with the needs of their tenants. Today, not next week or the week after.

No hiding behind red tape - the PM should be making this happen, instructing K&C to crack on with looking after those poor people now.

user1496484020 · 16/06/2017 16:31

This all smacks of keeping down the commoners. Desperate. While children were burning to death, they saw fit to make sure children couldn't play outside. Well they've surely solved that problem. Bad bad bad bastards.
