Twelve people confirmed dead with that number expected to rise significantly.

Many others injured and distressed. People have lost relatives, friends and their homes.

250 firefighters in attendance, risking their lives in an unprecented fire and it's aftermath. Other emergency services and NHS staff working hard to help survivors.

Many questions to be answered.

Flowers to all those affected and everyone helping.

Dany Cotton is amazing.

I have just been overcome with emotion watching her speak in that clip.

Me too.

Every time I see her speaking about her fire fighters I choke up.

They are such brave & amazing people.

Teresa May could have met some of the residents at one of the hotels they've been moved to, nowhere near the actual site.

Terfing · 15/06/2017 13:10

Corbin managed it though?

user1496484020 · 15/06/2017 13:10

Cote - I'm not sure whether I may have misunderstood one expert who has been on Sky a few times, but he basically was saying that once the insulation caught light, the fact that there was a gap, meant that the flames could easily access the full surface further up and alight if you get me?

CoralDreamscapes · 15/06/2017 13:10

SylviaPoe Are you sure that has not happened?

11122aa · 15/06/2017 13:11

And the compartmentalisation did work a bit on the lower floors. The elderly man rescured after many hours was on a floor above where the fire started but the fire didnt reach his actual flat thought the time he was trapped in there.

CaveMum · 15/06/2017 13:11

Corbyn wouldn't have quite the same number of people in his entourage though, I'm assuming.

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 13:11

I can only go on what is being reported. The Guardian reported that she did not meet any local people. I obviously can't be sure as I'm not there.

Badbadbunny · 15/06/2017 13:14

And the compartmentalisation did work a bit on the lower floors. The elderly man rescured after many hours was on a floor above where the fire started but the fire didnt reach his actual flat thought the time he was trapped in there.

Looking at the pictures, he was in the corner of the building where the only fire brigade aerial platform was pouring water, so it's more likely it was the water that stopped the cladding fire spreading around his flat rather than compartmentalisation - the other sides away from the aerial platform did suffer severe fire damage.

Charmageddon · 15/06/2017 13:16

Corbyn's doing his thing, which is great and needed; he's also very good at people stuff.
However, he isn't PM & has the luxury of time to do this.

Theresa May is PM.
She did the right thing I think by quietly & privately meeting the emergency services.
She has a shitload to do that JC doesn't.

Also, she's just announced a full public inquiry will be carried out, so she's not shying away from things at all.

On a tangent, after a month of our emergency services repeatedly going above & beyond (although they say 'just doing their job') I hope to god there is swift action wrt their being valued properly by govt.
Massive pay rise & all the resources they need.
They're amazing.

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 13:17

I don't see how compartmentalisation can work at all when it is all breached by flammable cladding.

CoteDAzur · 15/06/2017 13:17

User - You need to "get me" on this.

It is no secret that cladding creates a gap. What should happen to prevent fire traveling up to higher levels in a flash is that (1) non-flammable materials should be preferred in construction, and (2) cavity barriers must be used.

I already mentioned cavity barriers, even bolded the term in my previous post and said they are mentioned on page 33 of the fire regulations I previously linked to. Did you look it up?

The building needs to be properly constructed in order to contain fire & allow time for rescue. That was not the case on this fire and heads need to roll.

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 13:19

I can appreciate Teresa May is busy, but maybe the Conservative Government could send one of the other politicians who is only as busy as Jeremy Corbyn?

RhythmAndStealth · 15/06/2017 13:19

BigYellow emailed my MP too.

And yes, those girls are quite something. As is this young man

A level student volunteers at Grenfell Tower all night, then sits exam

I'm just going to leave this here......

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 13:20

Thanks Cote for explaining stuff about the cladding.

Notreallyarsed · 15/06/2017 13:20

Sorry I should clarify it's an article in The Independent detailing the 10, yes 10 London fire stations which closed today.

CoralDreamscapes · 15/06/2017 13:21

notreally that link doesn't work.

Notreallyarsed · 15/06/2017 13:21

Sorry my mistake I didn't check the date. It was 2014.

RhythmAndStealth · 15/06/2017 13:21

Full public inquiry

But if a Junior Minister was sent instead of the PM/a Cabinet Member the Government would be accused of not caring enough. It's a lose-lose situation for them.

It is absolutely right to hold them to account for what has happened, but right now the priority must be the recovery of those who were trapped and rehousing those left homeless.

Charmageddon · 15/06/2017 13:22

There will inevitably be (as there always is in tragic incidents) a series of errors - some relatively minor, some major - that individually may have not had such a catastrophic outcome, but accumulated together have proven deadly.

There will be no one thing (or person) at fault as such, but many culpable to a greater or lesser degree.

Undoubtedly it would seem at the moment that the design/composition/fitting of the cladding is the biggest factor in the spread & ferocity.

CoralDreamscapes · 15/06/2017 13:23

"It is absolutely right to hold them to account" I hope by them you mean all parties; there is not one party at fault here.

SylviaPoe · 15/06/2017 13:24

I don't think the situation is about them 'winning.' It shouldn't be treated as a PR exercise. It's about if there is something they can do to immediately support local people, which would include a visit.

BigYellowJumper · 15/06/2017 13:26

Totally agree sylvia . She should care less about how she looks to others and more about actually giving a shit.
