I've just read on the net about the 2 year old who was sexually assulte and murdered. why does this have to happen? I'm very upset as i'm sure you all will be once you hear/read about this. Have a look at \link{http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/6356009.stm}

Bramshott

Personally, if it were my son I would never want to set eyes on him again, and if he was given the death penalty then so be it, I would only grieve for the man I thought my son was, not what he had become, I could never forgive.

Exactly cod. Exactly.

You've also got to bear in mind what they dont report too. The Stuart Lubbock case was a prime example of that.

bundle · 14/02/2007 15:38

cod once someone has been charged then there are very strict rules on how you report it. and anyone can go and sit in a public gallery of a courtroom if they don't trust what they read.

DizzyBint · 14/02/2007 15:39

dh works for the police team working on this, and other serious crimes in leeds. do not believe what you read or hear about it. like cod says.

I agree, cod. I worked as a judge's assistant for a couple of years, and so sat in his court. Two of the cases were quite high profile, yet what was reported in the media was sooooo different from what went on in that courtroom.

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 15:39

Bundle, I was on the jury for a murder trial and the way it was reported was shit.

DizzyBint · 14/02/2007 15:40

you don't get the full picture in the courtroom either though.

part of dh's role is as a disclosure officer.

expatinscotland · 14/02/2007 15:42

You get a way better picture than the media reports, particularly if it's a closed courtroom or there's a gag order.

In the US, the judge knows the defendant's history.

It's even more demoralising when that judge has had that defendant/accused in his courtroom before.

cod i meant before the trial starts

obviously then every paper/tv stn will want their particular story on it. i obviously don't sanction inaccurate reporting (have only today been consulting my producer guidelines...talk about swotty)

bundle · 14/02/2007 15:47

hunker what kind of stuff did they say?

expatinscotland · 14/02/2007 15:47

It does, unfortunately. The judge I worked for, may he RIP (he died of heart failure), told one defendant, 'Oh, you again! I'm going to get a rubber stamp for all your oral depositions, b/c they all start: I don't know nuthin'. I was in my friend's house and the police came in and arrested me. How is it that that keeps happening to you? And every single time, it's with at least 10 grams of coke on you?'

Bundle, I've never covered crime so have forgotten the detail, but I was taught that there were only ten facts you could safely report once someone had been charged. Seems to have gone completely by the board these days though. (Cannot remember all ten for the life of me - name, address, charge... erm...)

bundle · 14/02/2007 15:49

during it you obviously still have to be accurate though gloss (or dross) is obviously liberally applied by certain sections of the media.
