yes edam, it's very strict, i thought it was even fewer than 10. even reporting what they're wearing at plea hearing is against rules, but you hear eg itn do it. me & my mcnae's never used to be separated...sigh. those days are gone. did go to old bailey though, during my training.

It's not a case of harder punishments, or string them up. we have over grouded prisons, under maintain mental health services. So your all asking what to do then? Not one of us have a fundermental answer to the problem, but i think that we must work as a collective, for heavens sake they are our kids these people pray on. The fact is these people do walk the earth and it doesn't matter how many we kill a new one is born every day (true). I think we are entilted to be well informed of were they are and how to spot them !!! they groom mums too not just kids (that nice flattering boyfriend hmm). harder punishments, stringing them up is no deterrent for these people, we only drive them under ground.history proves this. I my self don't pretend to live in a waltons world and i wouldn't advice anyone else to.The reality is they will never be iradicated, i don't really want to live with these people but i do, so i myself would prefer to reach some common ground with fellow mums. about how we can live with these people. as for them not thinking when they commit these crimes, you once more are providing them with a easy way out. Hay i lost my mind when i strangled that kid, but never mind i'm fine now. please ! wake up icod and any others like yourselve.

oh god yes. When i did jury service we had a case of gbh and abh which was, IMO, quite 'grey' ie not clear cut. He was found guilty, and only then was it revealed he had form for similar, and was currently on a charge for throwing a tea urn full of boiling water over a tealady on a building site.

Judge was furious that the prosecution hadnt asked for it to be included.

I was actually taught by one of the guys who wrote the set book - not McCrae's, I think. Derek Smith? But it has long left me...

Go on Bundle, you've got your producer guidelines, give me a quick refresher!

I think icod was getting more at prevention rather than rehabilitation wrt to societal and environmental influences.

No to death penalties all the same.

As a mother of a 2yo girl I was crying reading this yesterday, that poor poor mother. The way it was reported though it just didn't make that much sense, there was a disturbance at the house at 8pm, the mother found the little girl at 9.30pm, was the mother in the house whilst it was taking place? Cannot even imagine that. I know there will probably be all sorts of stories going around.

IMO paedophiles can never be rehabilitated and released back into society with children. Yes most were abused as children themselves and for some it is the only "affection" they have ever known. To them they are doing nothing wrong. No amount of prison time is going to change that sort of person. Life imprisonment with no parole ever, no luxuries, working 12 hours a day 7 days a week at something whihc the proceeds would them be given to victims families and for counselling/support groups for victims.

They said "man killed his girlfriend, ooh, he was a nasty stalker, evil, evil, evil" when actually, he hadn't stalked her - it was a lot more complex than that. Yes, he'd killed her, that wasn't in dispute, but the way they presented it was oversimplified to the point of inaccurate. And they pronounced his name wrong.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/02/2007 16:06

Sweetkitty, i dont think that all of them are unaware of right or wrong. Its really not as straightforward as that. Its about knowing boundaries, and how many obstacles are needed for them to get over in order to commit a crime.

Cod, you think so???

Cod, when you say "alot" do you mean a large percentage of paedophiles, a higher percentage vs average population or what?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/02/2007 16:08

ROFL...thank you, i think....

bloomin eck

someone has nicked it off my (not so tidy) desk and the bbc online intranet version is nigh on impenetrable...

i think it's just name, address, age, charge(s), committal date...ummmmm..between us we'd make about 1/4 of a reporter

edam · 14/02/2007 16:11

Um, life imprisonment with no hope of parole and no 'luxuries' would make the prisons impossible to manage.

Unless you have one warder to every prisoner you need prisoners to cooperate. And they need incentives to cooperate as well as disincentives for bad behaviour. If someone knows they will never be released even if they make a huge effort to change, and knows that they will never get any privileges, then you are giving them a lot of power.

They may as well start a riot/stab an officer/member of staff. Don't forget you are already dealing with people who aren't great at thinking through the consequences of their actions and have a propensity to violence...

bundle · 14/02/2007 16:11

hunker that's awful. and can't condone the pronunciation error, am a radio gal thru n thru. do you think they were "seduced" by one of the barristers' line of questioning?

LOL how do you think I earn my living?! Just have never done crime, since I got frightened off during work experience (crime reporter was very seriously threatened by local Mr Big in the drugs scene).
