We need to revive this petition, and quickly. It will be debated, in the spotlight, by MPs on September 5 and it's our best chance - through massive numbers, even if the debate is technically a formality - to show that those of us who wanted to remain in Europe are still here, and must be heard. Since the referendum, we've been all but ignored. Please, please, share this as widely as possible. ‪#18MillionNames - The new guard need to know we have to be listened to; We CAN make a difference. ow.ly/Ya7M302csoi

If remainers think the EU are so cruel as to refuse to trade with Britain then why would anyone want to be in a club with those bullies?

There are plenty of other countries in the world we can trade with, do you really think wants us to do that?

do11y · 16/07/2016 14:18

annandale yes I have. Have you read my response? Have you also tried reading the OPs subsequent messages in reply to others on this thread? My message is in response to all of the OPs cr4p on this. What is your point?

JudyCoolibar · 16/07/2016 14:34

It's not cruelty to refuse to trade with Britain, it's simple pragmatism and economic forces. If you had a choice between going to the cheaper shop that's easier to get to and to get around, or one that is less inviting and more expensive, you wouldn't be being cruel or a bully by opting for the cheaper one, would you?

As for plenty of other countries in the world - we would have to increase trade with them by around 45% to make up for what we would be losing. For those countries, again, it is much easier to trade with a group of 27 countries than one very small one, so why would they be falling over themselves to switch trade to us?

peteneras · 16/07/2016 15:10

Yes peach, this is something I’ve been stumbled over and over again since Day One when DC first announced the Referendum date way back in February after his miserable failure in gaining more concession from the EU and the pathetic Project Fear was then launched.

“We would be denied access to 500 million people in the single market if we left” so it was drummed into our heads. This instantly didn’t look right to me. If we’d left, then it would only be 430 million. So Project Fear falls flat on its face at the first hurdle.

And so what if we are denied access to 430 or even 500 million people in the EU single market? People who suggest this to us clearly cannot see beyond the borders of Europe. Nor have they, as Nigel Farage would say, done a single day’s business in their lives.

Let’s take it down to its simplest form. We are talking trade and business, are we not? Any business man or woman worth its salt will tell you: Have money, we’ll talk. No money, no talk!

The UK is the fifth largest economy in the world i.e. lots of money here. I’m just worried how Britain will prioritise who her trading partners are as the whole world will be falling over themselves wanting to trade with us, to buy and to sell.

Yes, look beyond the European borders!

For a start, there’s China - 1.4 billion people. In other words, more than 3 times the EU!

Not to mention India - 1.3 billion people - another 3 times that of the EU!

I won’t bore you with the Americas, Africa, Australiasia and other Asian nations like Japan etc.

Trump says he’ll put Britain first in the queue for USA. Australia and New Zealand are vying against each other to be the first to sign up with Britain. Gosh, the future looks really exciting!

And let’s hope the manufacturers of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW, etc. can find somewhere else to dump their products.

lljkk · 16/07/2016 16:24

Oh yes, Donald Trump, now there's a man who says what he means Not.

... single market ... it would only be 430 million

Unless Turkey joins, which the Leavers say is inevitable & very very soon, so that's 80 million back to replace us. The 1.x million in each of China-India, both domestically protectionist markets (who can produce everything they want cheaper than we can). Just because the people are there doesn't mean we will have any access.

GladAllOver · 16/07/2016 16:38

Haha!
I think that one about Turkey joining the EU any time soon has just been blown out of the water.

JudyCoolibar · 16/07/2016 17:20

The UK is the fifth largest economy in the world

Not any more. It's already fallen to sixth place since the referendum and will fall further.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 16/07/2016 20:59

I voted remain

I would rather just move forward now and agree with poster who raised the issue of so many people not bothering to vote

politicians should have been aware how their voters felt if they did they would have opposed the referendum before it happened

whenwillsummercome · 16/07/2016 22:54

There's no punishment involved.

Don't you all get it - we're NOT a big player. Nobody will much care about us. We'll suddenly realise that actually, we're just a tiny North Sea island.

The years after Britain lost its empire and before it joined the EU were terrible for us, and are not ones we should wish to repeat.

annandale · 16/07/2016 23:14

Do11y I read the OP as a strong leaver viewpoint saying it's all fine and why are remainers trying to overturn the result - and I read yours as the same strong leave viewpoint, so why are you referring to the OP as crap?

GladAllOver · 16/07/2016 23:21

The UK is the fifth largest economy in the world
When will the Leavers get over spouting that crap? We weren't put in that place by God!
In Victorian times the UK was the no.1 economy.
Then we dropped to no.2
Then no.3
Then no.4
Then no.5, until the referendum when we dropped behind France.
Now we are no.6
And there are several countries coming up fast behind.

On our own, and without free trade with Europe, we are stuffed.

Thank you so much Leavers.

SapphireStrange · 18/07/2016 17:35

For a start, there’s China - 1.4 billion people. In other words, more than 3 times the EU!

Ask Switzerland how their trade deal with China is going so far.

Australia and New Zealand are vying against each other to be the first to sign up with Britain.

Of course they are. Trading nations know that we're in trouble and that certain elements of government would sign any kind of deal just to be able to show people that they have made a trade deal despite the 'doom and gloom' Remainers.

Do you think Australia are just dying to give the UK wonderful trade terms? Or do you think they know a slightly pitiful, wounded beast when they see one?

whenwillsummercome · 19/07/2016 11:13

More to the point, Sapphire, what exactly do we trade with Australia?? virtually nothing... so it's an irrelevance.

peteneras · 19/07/2016 16:35

”Not any more. It's already fallen to sixth place since the referendum and will fall further.”

Project Fear seems to be still alive and kicking!

You seem to be missing the big picture. So what if the UK slipped one place but I haven’t seen any evidence of this? Fact of the matter is that in a world of appx. 200 countries/economies and to be ranked in the first half dozen , a small country like the UK is punching way, way above its weight!

If anything, the UK is predicted even to overtake Germany in the next 10 to 12 years, never mind France, a country seems to have lost control of itself and in a total mess!

Only 27 countries are in the EU after Brexit - and this number is going to dwindle - the rest of the world moves on, EU or no EU.

It is sad to see the number of doom merchants prophesying Armageddon befalling this country after the EU referendum. Thankfully, the majority of the population is more upbeat or else we’re all well and truly stuffed listening to their crap.

peteneras · 19/07/2016 16:39

”Do you think Australia are just dying to give the UK wonderful trade terms? Or do you think they know a slightly pitiful, wounded beast when they see one?”

Well, I’ll tell you what I think.

I think a 10-year-old kid might be able to tell you in this world: Money Talks. You seem to have forgotten what I wrote above - No Money, No Talk.

Never mind about Australia, even combining with its neighbour New Zealand, the two economies down under do not even come to half the size that of the UK’s! And you think the Aussies will be able to dictate terms to the UK?

Get real!

As for China, if my private Inbox is anything to go by, the number of business enquiries/proposals that I get from there (on a private basis) is enough to make you think you don’t need anybody else in this world.

MangoMoon · 19/07/2016 16:48

Watching the Brexit debate last night, the overwhelming message from practically everyone was (paraphrased):

Stop pissing around bemoaning the result - continuing to navel gaze about ways to derail it or 2nd referendums etc are a sure fire way to actually bring about the prophesied Armageddon.
It's the unknown that causes a drop in confidence in the markets, which is what another referendum, another General Election, another Scottish IndyRef etc will do.

DanyellasDonkey · 19/07/2016 16:51

What is the point in having a referendum about anything if those who don't get their own way throw their toys out of the pram and say "We must have a petition,/another vote" etc etc until they get their own way.

It's the same with Nicola Sturgeon and her awful SNP. They didnt' get the result they wanted in the independence (once in a generation) referendum so not they want another one, then when the Brexit vote went against them they are bleating about that too.

Please shut up and get on with what the MAJORITY voted for - you don't represent all of Scotland as you seem to think you do. I for one am embarrassed to be associated with a country that has this woman speaking on our behalf.

peteneras · 19/07/2016 17:01

I don't think I've met anyone as pathetic as she!

GladAllOver · 20/07/2016 10:08

Project Fear seems to be still alive and kicking!
How silly to keep chanting 'project fear' every time someone points out a downside of Brexit. Grow up FFS. It's about time you accepted that of course there are some downsides to leaving the EU.
The fact that a majority voted Leave doesn't diminish or cancel any of the many problems with Brexit. They are still there to be faced by us all.

If anything, the UK is predicted even to overtake Germany in the next 10 to 12 years
One lonely prediction amongst many others predicting very different outcomes. And you omitted the part about the breakup of the UK.

Yes, the result of the referendum was to leave, and those who voted Remain should follow May's example and get on with it. But that doesn't mean that we are going to ignore the problems it brings, or the (£350m?) lies that were told to get that result.

SalemsLott · 21/07/2016 13:19

I've signed this petition Smile

peteneras · 22/07/2016 23:52

” How silly to keep chanting 'project fear' every time someone points out a downside of Brexit.”

Downside, what downside?

My ‘Project Fear’ response was to the poster who claimed “. . . it's already fallen to sixth place since the referendum and will fall further.” I asked for evidence - none forthcoming.

The referendum was hardly a few weeks old when it is claimed the UK’s position’s already fallen to sixth place since the referendum and will fall further. Do they rank these things on a daily or weekly basis? What bollocks!

If this is not Project Fear, I don’t know what is.

(I’m still waiting for the first air raid siren to go off).

Yes, you said it, there are initial problems to be faced after Brexit, after 43 years it’s a phenomenal move, a seismic change - everyone knows that even before the referendum, what do you expect? But still the majority voted Leave because they can see the long term perpetual benefits. The UK today isn’t exactly falling apart, is it?

No, the £350m is just a fraction that we would save for ourselves, I’m thinking more like £10½b annually, it’s not a lie.

About the breakup of the UK, if you’re referring to Scotland, Sturgeon’s tantrum won’t get her anywhere. Like I said before, she’s pathetic and a great opportunist, always looking for an excuse to call a 2nd Independence referendum. The EU has told her where to get off!

Girlgonewild · 23/07/2016 22:29

I voted remain. I accept we lost. I understand the Brexiters are a mixed group who wanted a huge variety of things and what they will end up with is the UK out of the EU making the best of things. In practice that wll probably mean those who voted leave (who tended to be less well paid or OAPs) worse off but that is just something those people will have to live with that. Tough. Also many of them did not vote to be better off but as a matter of principle and they do not mind that they will be worse off. I am very much up personally and financially on Brexit so far but even so I wish we had voted to remain.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/07/2016 22:37

I voted leave Girl. I know many, many people who did. Sorry to burst your bubble but of the people who voted out none I know are oaps or less well paid. Many are high earners and many teens or 20's.

Brexit · 23/07/2016 22:43

Glad to hear that you are up personally and financially Girl

no idea what being personally up constitutes

SanityClause · 23/07/2016 22:46

Australia has just completed a trade deal with China. Negotiations took 10 years.

Australia has stuff that manufacturing counties want. Rare earths, for example.

The U.K. economy is based on financial services. Australia is already a major player in the Asia-Pacific region, in this sector.

Australia may be a smaller economy (its population is about a third the size of the U.K., in any case). But really, it's not desperate to trade with the UK. Happy to, of course, but not desperate to do a deal. Unlike the UK, which is, let's face it, not in a strong negotiating position, right now. Even if we had enough trade negotiators. Which we don't.
