How sad. Inside a gay nightclub, they say there are hostages and the shooter could have an explosive

Sad

I read in the upper that his dad said he recently went nuts when he saw a gay couple kiss.

I would see what his dad said, did he tell him he was being a bigot, or agree they were wrong? I wonder if he was brought up with 'not your life. Not your choice. Live and let live.'

Unstable loser is able to buy guns like we would buy sweeties. This whole second amendment needs a review. if it was so wonderful why didn't someone on the club 'defend' themselves and shoot the bastard? Because life isn't like a dirty Harry movie.

TheWitchwithNoName · 13/06/2016 11:03

There was a blonde lady on the news last night, her son was in the club - hiding in the toilets and texting her. She had gone along to the club but didn't know if he was dead or alive - it really got to me (she was understandably inconsolable) does anyone know if her son was alive please?

peachpudding · 13/06/2016 11:06

If everyone in the club has assult rifles imagine what would have happened if they had all opened fire. How many more would have died?

peachpudding · 13/06/2016 11:08

Imagine what would happen at sports games if 100,000 fans all had assault rifles under their coat.

passmethewineplease · 13/06/2016 11:13

thewitch unfortunately her son was named as one of the victims that died. Sad

Harrowing stuff.

You just can't comprehend it.

LurcioAgain · 13/06/2016 11:17

Thewitch, passme - you may not be talking about the same woman. There was an absolutely harrowing article on the BBC this morning about a mother who had received similar texts from her son, who turned out to be among the dead, but from the photos she and her son were black. So I guess we don't yet know the outcome for that blonde woman. My heart goes out to both mothers, it is the most awful thing I can imagine right now.

Islam is to ISIS as Christianity is to KKK

Except Islam teaches intolerance of homosexuality as mainstream. The majority of Muslims believe it to be wrong, including some pretty liberal friends of mine.

Let's not kid ourselves please.

So does Christianity. Many UK churches will not marry gay people. Many, many Christians view homosexuality as a sin. Many churches will not accept ordained women. And the Church of England is about as liberal an institution as you can get. It is worse in America.

Religion is by it's very nature intolerant, and resistant to change.

mamamea · 13/06/2016 11:48

"So does Christianity. Many UK churches will not marry gay people. Many, many Christians view homosexuality as a sin. Many churches will not accept ordained women. And the Church of England is about as liberal an institution as you can get. It is worse in America.
"

This is not really accurate. The majority of Americans support homosexual acts, and homosexual marriage.

And it is absolute nonsense to say the C of E is about as liberal as you can get, the Episcopal Church is far more liberal.

TheWitchwithNoName · 13/06/2016 11:51

I've just seen the BBC article and it was another mother (Mina) - bless her, I hope her son didn't suffer too much, that's a shit thing to say isn't it? The fear they must have felt Sad It was another lady on the news, blonde lady.

originalmavis · 13/06/2016 11:59

I used to work for the church and yes, the vicar would marry a gay couple. I asked him.

DoloresVanCartier · 13/06/2016 12:01

Those Jim Jeffries clips are the best thing I've watched regarding gun control. I know he's a comedian but wow, he hits it on the head. Chilled you cannot say he does not make perfect sense and refutes your protection arguments completely

iPost · 13/06/2016 12:36

ABC News have updated their interview with Christine Leinonen, the blonde mother looking for her son.

They are reporting that she has been told that he died.

stilllovingmysleep · 13/06/2016 12:45

What a tragic tragic thing that happened. I am horrified.

And Chilled, you don't sound chilled at all, you come across as being in a Cowboys and Indians movie. I am tempted to feel concerned for you in terms of your claim to feeling so 'unsafe'. That's a pity to feel so unsafe all the time.

Shariamom · 13/06/2016 13:00

And the demonisation of Muslims continues, as this thread shows.

carryam · 13/06/2016 13:01

If in Britain, vicars are forbidden by law to marry gay couples.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/06/2016 13:15

And the demonisation of Muslims continues, as this thread shows

No, not muslims in general ... just anyone who supports, enables or in any way excuses this kind of behaviour

I'd hope that anyone with a brain would be able to understand that most muslims are as appalled as everyone else

AlPacinosHooHaa · 13/06/2016 13:28

Luckily our society is not run intertwined with Christianity, yes its still present but we managed to divorce church and state.

Sadly this has yet to happen in many Muslim countries round the world. So taking about the KKK is far more isolated than a whole nation brought up to believe, through state and mosque, being gay is wrong.

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2014/12/isiss/ this has nothing to do with Islam/ is not Islamic/is more to do with Buddhism than Islam. And (b) That thirty years ago some Christian fundamentalist attacked an abortion clinic so it’s really not worth worrying about.

deathtoheadlice · 13/06/2016 13:56

The shooter had beaten up his previous wife numerous times (bbc) and her family rescued her, much to their credit.
That ALONE should have prevented his security checks, prevented him from being able to own weapons, and he should have been in prison for that crime.
Maybe if violence against women were taken seriously, more men with anger issues would be behind bars instead of shooting innocent people in bars. It would have prevented this tragedy. That makes me so angry.

cressetmama · 13/06/2016 14:01

Ayaan Hirsi Ali makes a fairly convincing case against Islam in her autobiography, Infidel. Her journey takes her from Somalia to Holland and the USA, via Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Germany, and from devout Muslim girl in sympathy with the Muslim Brotherhood to Dutch MP, American academic and atheist, via a liberal university education in history and politics.

Having just finished her book as the first reports of Orlando were being broadcast, I'm fairly sure she would come on here saying that Islam (all of it, not just its extremist faction) has no tolerance of diversity, in any dimension, no intellectual curiosity and systematically oppresses women.

stilllovingmysleep · 13/06/2016 14:10

Deathtoheadlice that sounds awful, that this young man had a history like that and yet managed to have access to a gun so easily! I really cannot start to imagine how gun supporters are ok with a fact like that!

Indeed. In the UK, when someone is interviewed for a shotgun licence (a shotgun being much less dangerous* than an assault rifle) the officer doing the interview seems to be quite at liberty to interview the spouse as well. A friend of mine was asked, of her husband, 'Does he beat you?'

The situation in the US is bonkers. I thought that when I lived there, and I think it still.

*Equally deadly, yes, but less accurate and with a shorter effective range and slower to reload.
