I'm really not sure where I stand. A lot of it just sems like school girl horridness

Aloha - I can understand your point - it's not as if Jade is actually calling her a "F**king Paki" - I presume if she did most people think she should be arrested.

But this type of racism is actually harder to deal with and more insidious. If, for instance, this was happening to me at work I wouldn't expect my boss to turn a blind eye just because the person concerned wasn't overtly racist. Neither would I expect a hardline reaction like them being sacked. But I would expect a middle ground - a warning, a written statement, a caution of some sort.

I don't see why that shouldn't be the case here.

100PerCentCod · 18/01/2007 14:19

i agree iht aloha
they are jeaous of her

so they are picking on her race to make her feel small

suedonim · 18/01/2007 14:20

Hmmm, not being able to view Celeb Big Brother is definitely on the list of positives for living in Nigeria.

mummylin2495 · 18/01/2007 14:21

i think its a shame they couldnt have the huge amount of money they will be paid taken off them, they will still be laughing cause they will still all get paid.and that dope of a boyfriend too !

Aloha · 18/01/2007 14:23

I'm not sure big brother can be compared to work though. People choose to go there knowing (in the main) that it is a pretty horrific place (shilpa possibly excepted, I admit). They can leave if they want. I can understand that watching this kind of casual, spiteful racism is upsetting. I really can, though being white I don't pretend to have the same visceral response to it.
tbh I was more worried about poor old Shabbaz - gay, asian and mentally ill - and bullied most horribly. But he wasn't nearly as attractive a person as Shilpa in any sense so he didn't get much support.

doormat · 18/01/2007 14:24

whether it is rascist or not is not the issue with me

I dont believe in anybody whatever color, class, financial position, creed, age etc

deserves to be treated like this and mercilessly bullied and degraded

it is no wonder there are kids out there trying to kill themselves and some unfortunately succeeding in suicide because of being bullied

if behaviour like this is being let off and condoned

it is really sad

Rhubarb · 18/01/2007 14:26

Blu - that's asking too much I'm afraid!

chenin · 18/01/2007 14:27

I think the worm is turning....

Jade's huge pic on the C4 BB website has just disappeared, the Perfume shop is stopping stocking her 'perfume' (eau de kebab) and her column in Now mag has been axed.

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 14:28

Why can't Big Brother be compared to work? They're getting paid for it! I can leave my job or move home or change school to get away from bullies/racists (whatever label you want to use) - doesn't make it ok that it happens whether you expect it or not.

Think I might be coming across as a bit of a nutter saying racists should get arrested. It's not as if I go around reporting every person that calls me a paki!

It's just that TV is such a established social outlet - it can be a powerful weapon for change. I just find it completely incredulous that no-one - not the show's producers, not OFCOM, not the police, not the gov't has stepped in. Everyone's got some wishy-washy comment but no-one's saying categorically "It's wrong" (so far)

UCM · 18/01/2007 14:29

Just to add, I haven't watched any of this, but am obviously reading on here.

Any one of those people in that house, can get up and walk away at any time, so it's NOT like work or school imho.

I don't agree with any form of bullying or racism but I fail to see how this has worked it's way up into global news when none of these so called Celebrities have to be there.

It belittles real cases of racism/bullying IMO where the victim can't just walk away.

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 14:30

Helliebean - really, where did you see that?

expatinscotland · 18/01/2007 14:30

Jade didn't write that column in Now anymore than Coleen WonkyfaceWayneRooneysdebitcard writes her.

Jade has admitted that.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 14:31

Look, I do understand your point and your frustration, but I think Reality Telly is not like most people's workplace, where they earn their living and have to do it day in and day out. Shilpa has a very successful career in India, the others all have day jobs, of a sort (!)
It's like on that grim Gillian McKeith programme where she demands her 'victims' show her their poo . Now that wouldn't be tolerated in the workplace either!

welshmum · 18/01/2007 14:32

The upside of this turn of events is that it may show to people like Jade that their behaviour is totally unacceptable, she could lose her whole celebrity status and all it brings and suffer a very public humiliation. How very satisfactory that will be. (surely she wouldn't win an eviction battle with Shilpa??)

Rhubarb · 18/01/2007 14:32

Carphonewarehouse has pulled it's sponsorship of BB.

Is this the best thing that has ever happened to TV? No more BB! Yippee!

Aloha · 18/01/2007 14:32

Or beign felt up in the changing room by Trinny and Susannah, who also make personal comments about your underwear!

chenin · 18/01/2007 14:33

I should be working too...!!

It is on the C4 BB forums... I presume its right... just hoping!

Tortington · 18/01/2007 14:33

i dont think you can say " if she was white....."

if she was white - she may have been queen bitch leading jo and beauty queen against jade.

i dont think its a class thing there is a middle ground in there - or has been with the newspaper woman and chleo lane.

they maybe jealous of her beauty, i am! but then i dont think pretty is the only factor here.

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 14:33

UCM - what's happening on TV is a reflection of what happens to those who can't walk away.

Yes the celebs are all over-privileged twats who came on the show to make themselves famous - I couldn't give two hoots about them. I've no doubts that neither Shilpa nor Jade will be negatively affected by this and I couldn't care less anyway.

The point is how they deal with this will have a direct effect with how we deal with this type of thing generally. If they get away with it, all those people in society who have a propensity for this type of thing will have a green light for their behaviour.

(in my view!)

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 14:36

Aloha - orry to keep disagreeing with you

Unfortunately it does appear that reality tv has become a job to most of the z-list celebs. What is Jade's "day job" anyway?

JoolsToo · 18/01/2007 14:37

have you noticed William Hill don't even had Jade and Jack in the betting!

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 14:37

sorry (!)

doormat · 18/01/2007 14:37

cashncarry jades day job
{if jack's behaviour isnt anything to go by]

is being a wankstain

UCM · 18/01/2007 14:37

C&C, I agree that it's highlighted how subtly (not sure if that is the right word) these things can creep into everyday situations, but surely, if that was you taking that abuse, you would walk out.

mytwocents · 18/01/2007 14:38

agree cash, if on tv , is in media, people communicate opinions aired and we all evaluate acceptable behaviour
