Obama, concern for the UK or US?

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 23/04/2016 08:15

Listening to Obama, I was struck that his language seemed to be about what is good for the US not what is good for the UK. Certainly the former US treasury secretary interviewed on the Today program was very US centric.

His comment about us going to the back of the queue, (and he did say queue instead of line because he was told to) seemed to be a bit of a threat. Is he out of order?

Do you really think Johnson is fit to be Prime Minister? He is a bit tainted, isn't he? What with the horrible frame of mind being voiced. He was doing well keeping the bumbling act up and not saying anything really. Playing to the masses. Maybe leader of the Conservative party. Can't stand Gove, but of course IDS was there before.

claig · 23/04/2016 13:45

To paraphrase that famouse Eurosceptic, Shakespeare, about the Three Amigos, Boris, Gove and Farage

When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning or in rain?

When the hurlyburly's done,
When the battle is lost and won

That will be 'ere the set of the sun
When voting on June 23rd has been done

Where the place?

Upon the heath

Fair is foul and foul is fair
Hover through the fog and filthy air

He who wins, is he who dares.

So raise your glass to freedom fair
Cast a vote for prosperity
Be bold, brave and without a care
Stop the EU taking our liberty

claig · 23/04/2016 13:47

'Do you really think Johnson is fit to be Prime Minister? '

I prefer Gove, I hope he runs.

oliviaclottedcream · 23/04/2016 13:55

It was rather refreshing to hear people telling him exactly where to get off. I think it's the first time I've ever heard our serving politicians, as well as London's mayor, tell a visiting American politician let alone the Prez, to mind his own sodding business and let us make our own choices about what's best for us.

Why doesn't he piss off home and sort America's economy, close Guantanamo and stop trying to police the world in the interests of monster corporations?

Hypocritical bag of hot air that he is... Sooner he off home, the better. Oo my blood's up....

oliviaclottedcream · 23/04/2016 13:58

Sooner he sods off home, the better ... flippin phone

Mistigri · 23/04/2016 13:58

Johnson's recent select committee appearance (where he was shown up as a know-nothing by the Tory committee chair) and his comments about Obama hating the British because he's half-Kenyan should surely disqualify him. But if the leave camp win, there will be a vacuum to be filled. Gove claims not to be interested in becoming PM.

Chipstick10 · 23/04/2016 14:07

Fuck off Obama , and take Cameron with you. Hope it backfires

Chipstick10 · 23/04/2016 14:10

I watched Fox News because I wanted to see if they would report it and to my surprise they showed it live in full. When it was concluded they went back to the studio where all the news anchors were gobsmacked that our journalists had dared to ask him how he felt about being told to mind his own business

Pangurban1 · 23/04/2016 14:10

Mm. Macbeth by Shakespeare, is the power of propaganda. Is that the message from the three stooges? Tell lies and spread distrust. Macbeth was supposed to have been in reality quite a good king. It is believed that Shakespeare was sucking up to King James who was a descendent of Malcolm who was put into power by the English to replace Macbeth. Is this the beginning of the propping up of Anglo power in Scotland or Alba by the English? Outside influences interfering with, supporting their kinfolk and manipulating the internal divisions and all that. Through division, conquer. Macbeth was unfairly vilified by this account to give validity to his usurpation and to garner favour with royalty.

Anyway, the prophesy was misleading.

Pangurban1 · 23/04/2016 14:11

I had a child by Caesarian and he was definitely born from a woman.

Pangurban1 · 23/04/2016 14:13

In fact, it could be argued that Macbeth was a piece of propaganda giving validation for extending spheres of influence, not reducing involvement.

Sixweekstowait · 23/04/2016 14:14

I think some of the anti-Obama language on here is pretty unacceptable and unnecessary- why the need to be so foul - mouthed? oh wait, is it because he is black?

oliviaclottedcream · 23/04/2016 14:31

Ohh Bourdic...Stop muckin' about!!!

SpareCrust · 23/04/2016 15:09

He is telling it like it is. The UK needs the US on- side. What short memories people have.

MyBeloved · 23/04/2016 16:35

It has nothing to do with his colour. Do not even try to play the race card. It is to with him sticking his nose into our political business and being mealy mouthed.

I want out. I do not trust European Politicians whom I have not even voted in to make decisions on my behalf. I do not need the American president making economic threats wrapped up in frilly language such as 'special relationship' and 'stronger together' to frighten me into voting the way I'm expected to.

It stinks.

Mistigri · 23/04/2016 16:47

Why do you perceive it as a threat? Do you not want to know how easy (or not) it may be for an independent UK to negotiate new trade relationships? Or would you rather stick your head in the sand and pretend that a post-EU Britain will not have to deal with foreigners with their own agendas?

There absolutely is a race agenda in the way Obama's visit has been discussed by the Leave camp - perhaps not in this thread, but let's not forget that it was Boris who chose to play the race card.

Sixweekstowait · 23/04/2016 16:49

The sheer vileness of the language used 'stinks' IMO. Obama has been treated with contempt by the racists in his own country and.I guess that attitude is alive and well here. Not playing the race card, just saying how it is. Look at what Boris did as well - it all stacks up.

Sixweekstowait · 23/04/2016 16:51

Mistigris- X posts except I would add that I think there is the stench of racism on this thread in the sheer OTT unnecessary vileness of the language used

Mistigri · 23/04/2016 16:56

bourdic I agree that the language is juvenile but I don't think it's racist (they say far worse things about our pink prime minister). However I do think that any leaver who doesn't condemn Boris for the half-Kenyan remarks does stand to be accused, if not of being racist themselves, then of willingly sharing a platform with racists. It's not like Boris doesn't have form - this wasn't a mistake by a ghost writer, there is no excusing it.

juneau · 23/04/2016 17:01

Obama doesn't give a flying fuck about the UK (and I say that as a dual US/UK citizen). He's done nothing to foster good relations between our two countries since he became president and of course he's only interested in US issues. He's the American president! He doesn't care about our little nation, which is useful when we do what America wants us to do, but otherwise we're not much different in America's eyes to France or Germany or another European nation.

As for the 'queue' reference - yep sounds to me like Dave told him to say that. No American would use the word 'queue' without prior thought - they'd say 'line'.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 23/04/2016 17:01

I agree with Bourdic. This does the leavers no favours.

I am beginning to doubt whether Boris really has what it takes to be the next PM. I feel to him the referendum is a means to an end (no 10) and I'm not sure if he doesn't understand or doesn't care what the consequences are for the rest of us if we leave he EU.

Sixweekstowait · 23/04/2016 17:02

It was rather refreshing to hear people telling him exactly where to get off. I think it's the first time I've ever heard our serving politicians, as well as London's mayor, tell a visiting American politician let alone the Prez, to mind his own sodding business

No coincidence is the first black President Mistigri

YokoUhOh · 23/04/2016 17:04

Chipstick Fox News = owned by Murdoch. Of course the anchors were 'shocked', they've been told to hate Obama and be pro-Brexit.

Of course the 'special relationship' is going to suffer if we leave the EU, this is why Vote Leave are so incensed by Obama's speech. It's been a shaky week for Brexit.

FelicityR313 · 23/04/2016 17:04

So far all I've seen are threats. If you don't remain we are going to punish you!

I don't like being threatened.

Sixweekstowait · 23/04/2016 17:05

I actually think that Boris is truly vile - in a sea of sel interested, self serving politicians, he takes the absolute biscuit. He has no gravitas whatsoever - can anyone really imagine him in a real crisis?
