What else can they say? 'chemicals can cause serious health problems' they have to claim that chemical riddled food is on a par with organic as most of us didn't have alot of choice 10-20 years ago.

I buy organic and to me it tastes sooo much better and I feel it's brilliant that we are going back to basics after trying to strangle the food market with alsorts of god knows what.

paulaplumpbottom - yummy peanut butter...Whole Earth Crunchy Original - no added sugar - sun dried peanuts. I don't even like peanut butter and I think it's yummy! They sell it in Sainsbury's.
Better not buy any though - I've just had a look and it's 592 calories per 100g!

Before I go...
Can I recommend to everyone not already doing so - grow your own tomatoes! They're dead easy - sow seeds in March or buy plants in May - stick each one in a large pot - keep warm and watered. When the baby tomatoes appear give them tomato feed once a week.
You can't beat a tomato picked fresh for a salad!
My favourite variety is 'Sungold' - very easy to grow - produces tasty little orange tomatoes.

We also grow Courgettes, Runner Beans, Lettuce and Peppers. Zero air miles and no pesticides - then at the end of the season we put the old plants on the compost heap

Hmmm, everyone, but everyone, comments on how marvellous my spag bol is and how it's nicer than theirs. It's cos the meat is local, organic and from my very lovely local butcher.

I'd rather have milk without antibiotics in it too.

We buy most fresh produce, meat, fruit juice, eggs, milk, yoghurts organic.

I'm not a 'dippyhippy liberal' but I suppose I might be a 'namby pamby more money than sense middle class mother who goes to stupid farmer's markets etc' (although that would be farmers' markets).

Isn't it just logical to eat the same fruit and veg but without the crap on it?

Bizarre view for me really since I didn't bat an eyelid about feeding the kids formula as babies

jampots · 11/01/2007 22:52

so how much is your butchers bill each week as i'd like to shop organically but am findin it hard to locate an organic butcher. I dont work and dh has only just started a new job after being made redundant from his factory job and am worried about the costs.

Basically will i spend much more than i do at my butcher if i go furter afield

Pablothelittleredfox · 11/01/2007 22:59

ROFL!!

There is quite a 'tasty' young man working in the butchers actually!

jampots · 11/01/2007 22:59

oh i know what i mean

Pablothelittleredfox · 11/01/2007 23:00

Hmm, it's quite a lot Jammy (I think anyway). This week I spent about £35 I think. Is that a lot? I don't know. It included mince, sausages, bacon, chicken fillets, and a few steak burgers.

See now I'm thinking 'is it organic? what makes me think it's organic?' - someone must have told me cos I'm sure it is

jampots · 11/01/2007 23:01

no £35 sounds fine really. Our butcher is a friend and obviously discounts heavily but of course my family's nutrition is more important than money

i'll just have to sell some shares each week

MomOnTheRun · 11/01/2007 23:03

I haven't read the full article, but if it's comments from a politician, it's not worth paying attention to. He already said it in the article, organic produce is only 4% of food and he isn't going to offend the 96% which is a lot of votes.

jampots · 11/01/2007 23:04

I go to /link{http://www.orothemarketplace.co.uk/Oro} for fruit and veg and things - its lovely but initially eveyrone thought it was organic - its not but locally produced stuff

Oro

colditz · 11/01/2007 23:08

Living in a market town, I buy from the Farmers' market because

A it is closer than any of the supermarkets

B it is cheaper

C they are always lovely to my 3 year old, answering many questions about what this is, and that is, and why, and

D It's fresher, and you can say to the person behind the table "What's really nice today" Or "Do me bowl for a quid" And they will. No plasic bags next to your lettuce3s, they put everything in a brown paper bag for you

It's not poncey at all, the poncey people go to M+S Food Brothel round the corner.

fortyplus · 11/01/2007 23:16

I go to my friend's farm shop where both the meat and the butchers are
well hung

jampots · 11/01/2007 23:18

hahahahahahahahaha

skibump · 11/01/2007 23:20

I've been an organic tesco-tart, but now I'm convinced. How do I find the nearest farmers' market?

fortyplus · 11/01/2007 23:21

Probably advertised in your local paper? You might find a farm shop nearby - look in yellow pages or if you happen to be in Herts I could tell you a few.
