part 1

The events of NYE were shocking enough; the subsequent minimising and under-reporting were an affront to women's rights to equality across Europe.

It's a testament to the tenacity and commitment of this community that we are at thread VII; do join the discussion and feel free to share the links and letters to anyone you think may wish to be part of this important debate.

We are currently awaiting the approval of a petition to parliament.

Shortly we will post links for those who want to take a proactive part in safeguarding the rights of all UK women to live in freedom from the fear of mass sexual assault as we sadly saw in NYE and reports of which are finally seeing daylight across Europe.

This is exactly 300 characters.
Following mass sex attacks on women throughout Europe we call on the Government to acknowledge and investigate the impact on women's rights of the immigration of men from cultures known to be misogynistic, and discuss the integration of those men. We are concerned that our rights will not be upheld.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 13:57

Help thats better but who is going to submit it? am happy to sign it again....

unlucky83 · 19/01/2016 13:58

I like this from up thread
'Following mass sex attacks on women throughout Europe we call on the government to acknowledge and further investigate the impact on women's rights of the immigration of men from cultures known to be misogynistic, and discuss the integration of those men.'

I think we should just go for it - resubmit the petition - put the original wording in the description. And do it now - we have everything else in place...Assume they don't work Sun - they got it on Mon am (with a lots of others from the weekend)...we should get it up by tomorrow at the latest...

fourmummy · 19/01/2016 13:59

We could do two at the same time: the current one can go on Change.org while we work on the wording for the govt.org one. The message will be the same so it shouldn't dilute the effect. Might even raise more awareness than with just one!

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 14:08

january some other interesting articles in there particularity on the head veils.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 19/01/2016 14:10

I agree unlucky, am happy to sign it send me link if you need too, or whoever is fronting it?

unlucky83 · 19/01/2016 14:38

We need a new person to front it ...I really can't do it!!!
Any other volunteers (again!)

MariscallRoad · 19/01/2016 14:57

Palebluedotty Makes sense to think about Canada's policy.

kesstrel · 19/01/2016 15:02

January I'd say both those articles, especially the veil one, have been carefully worded to exaggerate their claims, without saying anything that is completely inaccurate.

januarybrown1998 · 19/01/2016 15:27

kesstrel interesting. I haven't read them so can't comment.

I was sent the because it features a programme that examines the issue of integration in Germany that echoes the debate we are currently having regarding language and learning it.

I think it's in the 'resources' section.

I thought that film (where a German lady speaks to young men born in Germany to immigrant parents) very interesting and fairly represented both sides of the issue.

Wordsaremything · 19/01/2016 16:21

I agree we should resubmit the gov one with amended wording and send the other to change . Org and/ or 38degrees or whatever it's called . Or all three?

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 19/01/2016 16:23

I say all 3.

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 16:26

The Government petition can't be resubmitted because the person who started it has said they are no longer involved.

Six people would need to be found to start a new Government petition, one to start it and five to support.

Wordsaremything · 19/01/2016 16:35

Though it could be argued this might dilute its effectiveness. Is our main aim to force a debate in parliament or to raise awareness? Bearing in mind we need 100,000 to even be considered .

Wordsaremything · 19/01/2016 16:38

Surely we need just one to submit and the same five to support?

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 16:39

Do we know who the five supporters were?

Moreshabbythanchic · 19/01/2016 16:46

I am happy to be one of the supporters if needed but due to circumstances I am unable to submit the petition.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 19/01/2016 16:58

Just to note : a parliamentary early day motion 953 was proposed by Gregory Campbell of the DUP regarding the minimisation by mainstream media of the New Year attacks.

You may wish to ask your own MPs to sign this.

Palebluedotty The Anglican vicar, didn't catch his name, blamed the changing attitudes on Islamophobia, was fully supportive of accepting all comers and said, I kid you not: "We have to be up for the troubles that come".

The vicar is Giles Fraser. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he is a Guardian columnist.

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 17:04

Giles Fraser, Anglican Vicar, name noted.

Does his boss approve? www.archbishopofcanterbury.org

Only 8 men are being held? Out of 1000 attackers?!?

VertigoNun · 19/01/2016 17:08

Does his big boss, a Woman approve of Giles?

Just skimmed through thread hoping to see petition active now. How disappointing.

I think change.org might be quicker, but if we use the same wording and say we get 1,000 signatures then would it be effective, wouldn't the government just say it's unclear what the petition is asking for, that we do enforce the law etc blah blah so can't debate anything and reject it again type thing?

I don't feel comfortable starting one, for the same reasons I gave on previous thread, the threats I've seen other women get online when talking about some men's behaviour worry me. I feel bad about that but I know I'll be no good to front it. I'm so sorry.

Out if curiosity, have there been many change.org petitions successful? I'll have a google later. I'm going to catch up on thread properly now.

januarybrown1998 · 19/01/2016 17:57

Here's Gregory Campbell's motion, do we urge our own MPs to sign it?
